But, if a movie makes me roll my eyes throughout, it isn't going to get high marks. It doesn't have to be too edgy -- but I don't want to watch a story that could've been written by a high school drama student. Some character complexity would be a good thing. A single plot twist or unexpected moment; one sympathetic military guy; a shred of non-highmindeness among the natives. The wise indian thing has been done to death. It was a half-assed story that's been told a hundred times, with characters that were flat and uninteresting.

And you raise a valid point no doubt with regards to the plot. In an ideal world i'm sure some of us would wish that James Cameron would have taken some risk in the script-writing department & not succumb to financial presures & expectations.

But personally, the rather conventional script doesn't diminish the experience for me.

HOwever, I suspect that if Avatar isn't accompanied by all this hype & praises, you'll be rating it 7/10 rather than 4/10.

Perhaps. But, you might be giving it a 7/10 yourself absent all the hype. A dolled-up clunker is still a clunker.

Do not feed the trolls!

Shai hasn't even seen the film - but as long as you keep responding to his nonsense, then he wins.

Bottom line is most people don't notice the simple story and are just in awe and glee with the wonderment and spectacle they are witnessing on screen.
And just for the record I'm a fan of all cinema. So just because I love Avatar and have seen it twice already, doesn't mean I dont like other stuff.
Some of my fave films of the year are:
Inglorious Basterds
Moon
Hangover
(500) Days Of Summer
Hurt Locker
Star Trek
District 9

And yet I still love Avatar to pieces for what it is.

Okay, so bickering about whether or not the movie was good aside, (and the answer is yes, it was good ;)) I want to know what you guys think about me taking my 11 year old sister to see it. I think it would probably be fine, but she's a little sensitive to scary things. I can't remember anything frightening about the film. The scene with the viperwolves chasing Sam in the dark is a little scary, but not too bad. Is there anything I'm forgetting? Anything that I might want to consider before I take her?

Thanks! :)

He has seen the film and its ok to state your opnion on the movie but going around every avatar thread bashing the movie is stupid:rolleyes:

Re: I saw AVATAR in 3D!

Best theater experience since Jurassic Park in my opinion.
It was breathtaking beautiful and maybe I'll catch another 3D screening soon.

Just saw this movie... WOW. I loved it. Absolutley awesome. I don't care if it wasn't original or if some people found it predictable. I thought it was awesome and the visuals were unbelivable. I'll be going in imax 3d again if they extend it in my nearest one.

Awesome. :rock

I don't recall anything terribly objectionable. Quite a bit of blue semi-nudity ... but I'm not sure whether that counts.

At 11 she should be okay for most of the scary stuff - no worse than an episode of Supernatural or even Gossip Girl.

I'm [retty sure that Lightwave posted this up some time....but i just stumbled upon it

Re: I saw AVATAR in 3D!

The Hangover is the ????...wtf? One of the funniest movies in the past few years.

Really? It has some funny parts, but in no way did it live up to the hype IMO. Comedy is tricky, some people find things funny and others don't. It's definitely the "cool" comedy of the year, with college kids saying "Dude, Hangover rocked!" But IMO it was okay the first time and gets repeatedly less funny with multiple viewings.

Agree 100% with you.Unfortunately some people will tell you it was a great pop-corn movie...

I have also notice, exactly like the Dark Knight, Fans of the movie will become slightly obssessed with the movie and really delusionnal.Do not attack their caca Masterpieces. They wont take it.Fail.

Shai......I didn't think you were going to see the movie. Did one of you chicks drag you to it with the promise of sex? ;)
