Just got back from watching in IMAX. Absolutely AMAZING moive! Far better than I had expected. Recommend anyone who is on the fence, or just plain doesn't care to see it, go and watch it. Definitely will be seeing this a few more times in the theatre.

Was there any special IMAX scenes? Man.. why don't we have IMAX cinemas in Sweden... :gah:

All I can say is that Disney better not ____ up marketing for The Lone Ranger, as that's one franchise that I'd like to see made into a series, but with Johnny Depp and Gore Verbinski at the helm, I think it's fair to say that that will probably be successful enough to warrant a sequel.

Drac, the whole movie is just beautiful. With the enhanced sound of IMAX it really took it to another level. But, either way I'd see it if I were you.

I saw it today my friend, just got home from the cinema with my gf! It was great! As you say, it was beautiful. I just wanted more when it ended! Can't wait to see the sequel that looks to be in the works right now! :impatient: :)

Very cool! I, too, would love a sequel! I'm gonna push as many people to see it as possible, including my girlfriend who was adamant about not seeing it. I'm not giving her a choice now...:wink1:

Exactly! You gotta show her who's the man, lol! Joking. But really, it was a great movie, I don't understand how it didn't make a great success at the opening. Might have been because of bad marketing.. here in Sweden I didn't see any commercials of the movie, I only saw some trailer on youtube and they weren't that good compared to how the movie actually is.

Honestly, the first couple of trailers I saw I wasn't very impressed with, but as I read more about the filmmakers and the passion they had for the source material, the more and more I wanted to see this; not unlike what Peter Jackson did with LOTR. I do really hope word of mouth helps this movie, it would be a shame if something this good flopped.

As for my girlfriend, we're going to watch it tomorrow, but she's still skeptical. And she's a big fan of sci-fi and fantasy, go figure...chicks.:slap

Its funny that a guy with a Hobbit avatar and sig is talking this way about a story he'd never read and had only seen the movie. There are a lot of dumb____s out there who say the same thing about the LOTR films.

"Grimy son of Groin" and "Grampa the gray."

Like LOTR is any different if you are clueless about the source material.

If you don't have any clue where they would take the sequels I suggest you put your brain in gear and realize they actually have a huge series of books to draw on.

And Predator fans have no basis for talking about character development. That's just retarded.

Ok I deleted my first reply, but I must say there is no need for the personal insult, I have not insulted anybody here for liking this movie, so there is no need for the suggestion that I might be stupid because I found the Jargon to be way over the top.

Yes Lord of the Rings has stuff like Gimli son of Gloin, Gandalf the Grey, but they are words used in the English language that are not too hard to work out what they mean, you know like Gimli has a dad called Gloin, or the Gandalf wears grey. However we have to have this drawn out scene to explain that Mars is called Barsoom and Earth is called Jarsoom, and that he came from Earth to Mars, something we were already fully aware of, rather than getting on with the main plot of him helping to rescue Heliumites from the evil clutches of the Zodangans (Thank you Disney Wiki)

I went to see this today with the gf. I loved it and so did she. Ya the names can get a lil confusing if you dont pay attention but same can be said for LOTR.

If you read the books for LOTR growing up watching the movie the names stick with you. same for John Carter. I never read the books but got to admit i went to Barnes right after the movie and got the 1st 3 novels.

I really really hope they make sequels.

One thing that I would have done differently is use a brighter color palette for Barsoom. A little to drab for my tastes....some primary blues, reds, and greens would have given it a more visual pop.

Funny you should say that - I was thinking that people are going to be comparing this film to Avatar and Avatar had such a rich color palette comparatively - they are going to think this film lesser for that reason.

I just saw the 3D Imax version and I have to say that it was almost everything I hoped it would be. I read the books when I was 8 so I don't really recall any of the details of the story and don't remember the Therns (sp?) at all. But I don't get that reviewers are saying it's too convoluted storywise - it was pretty straightforward without going into the complex politics of Barsoom as Lucas might have.

The stills of the movie hadn't made me think Lynn Collins was anything special - but she is the perfect Dejah - strong, beautiful and much smarter than John Carter. Kitsch was okay - I believed in him as the reluctant hero and he did a great job with the physical comedy too.

The CG was brilliant all around, especially the Tharks and Woola - the characters really came out - more so than with the N'avi I think.

It is disappointing that the marketing team failed so egregiously with this film - it could easily have done as well as the PotC. Hopefully Disney will recognize the potential of the franchise and go forward with a sequel even if the boxoffice isn't everything they hoped. For once I really do believe that if this film fails it will be the marketing at fault and not the film itself.

How is this any more difficult than Middle Earth, the Shire, Mordor, and Rivendel? How is understanding Barsoomian names any different than Elven? Its ridiculous for a LOTR fan, I presume based on your sig, to say that the movie suffered from too much confusion of weird places, weird names, and weird languages. A LOTR fan should understand not to be so biased based on that stuff, which is clearly important to LOTR fans to be in the films just as it may be for Barsoom fans to have that in the film.

The suggestion to use your brain wasn't for you, but regardless if it offended, I'm sorry.

I'm a little perplexed by the accusation of being slow - I don't recall that there was very much exposition at all. And I was shocked when I got out of the film and that it had been 2 1/2 hours - it didn't feel like that all to me.

As for the title - I asked a 20 year old if they knew what the film was about. They had seen the poster and said they thought it was about some rap star whose real name is "John Carter". Not a clue that it was an Avatar/Star Wars type of film.

With any luck, they don't make the same marketing errors with a sequel, and then people go out and buy the film to prepare themselves. I don't know, I really would love to see this in IMAX 3D, but the closest is like an hour away in Columbus, I know I'll make the pilgrimage for the big ones (Avengers, TDKR), but I enjoyed this film so much that I might take the trip. My hope, just as much as a sequel, is that this opens the door for Disney to adapt other Burroughs works (I.e. Tarzan, Tarzan, and Tarzan.) in a similar fashion. The fact that we're seeing this and The Lone Ranger makes me think of how cool it would be if Disney brought a whole library of classic characters to a modern audience.

Agreed it was a really quick 2.5 hours.
