Saw this yesterday. Acting is not that great honestly. Kitsh has very limited range and tries too hard to sound like Batman.

He got zero chemistry with the actress too. I feel more for Dafoe character's and the daughter Soja and they are not even real.

Mark strong has a great understated presence though. Dougray Scott is really campy though.

But despite all the flaws, I love it!!! It reminds me a lot of ANH. It's a pure adventure movie and I was really absorbed by Barsoom.

The scale is epic and the action sequences are very well done.

Bring on a sequel because I wouldn't mind more adventures in Barsoom. Movies these days can be so pretentious with their supposed "depth" that it's so refreshing to watch a movie today that is totally pure adventure like the first Star Wars.

Only if you have motion sickness. Only people with motion sickness get sick from that. Otherwise it's fine. It's the least shakey handheld movie ever made. A lot of it is done on tracks, and dollys. Not to mention some great crane shots.

Visuals were awesome in this film. Easily the best CGI aliens ever done to that scale IMO.
The costumes and set designs were gorgeous and reminded me so much of the classic 60s-70s style of fantasy films only of much better quality and scale.

:exactly:

This is the type of film that reminds you of what it was like to see Star Wars for the first time as a kid.

A lot of the great special effects wizards from the past 35 years like Dennis Murren cite the first time they saw the Cyclops in Ray Harryhausen's classic The 7th Voyage of Sinbad as a turning point and knew what they wanted to do for the rest of their lives. John Carter is that type of film.

Chronicle is better to be seen in the theater. John Carter isn't going any where for a while.

See Chronicle. John can wait a few more weeks/days.

Chronicle looks ok. It appears to be something that's better fit for a rental IMO. I've had chances to pay theater prices for it and just don't feel its worth it. However, John Carter did and was worth it.

its crazy but the more I think about the Movie the more it reminds me of the feeling I had right after I watched New Hope for the first time.

damn I keep hoping so bad there is more sequels...

Agreed.

I had the chance to go see Chronicle opening day...went to see Redtails instead.

John Carter, however, was a must see opening weekend and it was definitely worth our time. :yess:

Agreed. Chronicle doesn't look that great to me. None of the previews left me with the impression that I needed to go see it now. The movie itself gives me a "Jumper" kind of vibe which turned out very bland. Since it's only a short wait for the rental I'd rather just save the $$$ and go see something else even if you decide against John Carter.

The previews for Chronicle didnt intrigue me either. At all. But I went on valentines day because my girlfriend wanted to see that over the vow thankfully, and we both absolutely loved it. Of course, John Carters trailers havent impressed me at all either, so maybe i'll love it too.

:exactly: Sadly, these types of movie no longer seem to interest today's masses. I love these types of movies and wish we had more of them.

I am planning to see John Carter again this weekend because I enjoyed the movie so much and I want to support it's box office run.

I am also going to try to see this again this weekend. Really remarkable movie. The only critique I feel is valid is the heavy exposition...lots of Martian culture, politics, jargon to cover in one movie.

Regardless, it's a crime that this movie wasn't marketed as "from the director of Finding Nemo and Wall-E, from the creator of Tarzan, from the creative team at Pixar, etc." There's a lot of blame being thrown around but wherever the truth lies the result was an ad campaign that tried to keep how good the movie is a secret.

But it exists, so that's something. :yess: And since it will likely be a standalone I imagine the (excellent) ending will fire up the imaginations of young people who come across it once it's in the timeless soup of home video.

Chronicle is a great movie, but would be equally good on a small screen. John Carter will probably be out of 3D screens pretty soon - so I'd go for that one.

Great article that expresses my feelings exactly on the schadenfreude of the Hollywood media about this film:

Interesting article for sure. This film just isn't being given a fair shake I don't think by the media and by some fans. Its a shame because this film is a great journey and while not perfect was a really fun ride.

Too many sheep believe what some idiot critic says and take their word as gospel instead of forming their own opinion of something be it a movie, book or music. :slap

I loathe critics.

This movie is fun and what going to the movies is all about, IMO.

Part of the problem is critics sometimes want to side with what they know the box office results will be. Its like, "oh this movie is gonna lose money, better give it a bad review so I look like I predicted it."

I agree with you 110% here. Craziness I say. :slap

Very true. To me they all do this.

Craziness indeed! :lecture
