I really don't understand what they were thinking hand-animating Steppenwolf.
It's not even about that but poor quality of the end result.
Looks as if it was done by the same fellas workin' on their CW shows. :lol

Davy Jones was manually animated, so... You get what I'm sayin' here.

Wasn't Davy Jones full mocap? They only animated the tentacles but his face and movements were all Bill Nighy.

Hand animation *never* looks good enough for live action movies.

The animation it's what makes Steppenwolf look so bad, his model and lighting are still superior to any MCU movie, it's the god awful inhuman animation.

Hell, Ragnarok CGI makes Cyborg look ok, and he's mocap, but Steppenwolf is just abysmal.

There are some bits where Steppenwolf's movements are mocap, and that looks ok as long as you don't see his facial expressions, but other than that...

Looks like morse code, lol.

What's that? "CLOSE GATE?" Will? WILL!?? :panic:

LOL I've messed up w. this kind of seat selection like the time I thought I got seats at the back, but turns out it was the front. We moved.

Holy ****, what a task.

Still, real mocap tracing was used as reference for the key frames, meaning they had the data of Nighy's actual face mesh frame by frame, it's not the same as doing it by hand from scratch, whereas SW looks like it was completely hand animated a la Pixar.

1. No mocap was used for his face, those were just painted dots for reference. 100% manual labor via key frames.

2. Can we stop callin' Steppenwolf SW? It's really stupid and confusin' as ****!

Technically, it's still mocap, it's captured and a mesh is generated based on that, frame by frame, which they used to map the key frames.

It's hand animated as much as a trace is hand drawn.

Oh, I was talking about Star Wars. What's next, you're gonna think TFA means The First Avengers?

I suggest we call Steppenwolf .... Sw...with a small "W". Or we can just call him "POS." :D

Example sentences.

I just saw JL and when Sups was fighting Sw, it was great!

*cough*... the PT.... *cough*

Yep, I was channel surfing a couple weeks ago and saw that ROTS was on TBS or something so I stopped to watch a few minutes of it. I was shocked at how cartoony and low res all the backgrounds looked. Just awful. It didn't even feel like the same medium as the OT/TFA/RO let alone the same series.

If the PT had special edition make-overs like the OT did I wonder how much of them would have be redone due to dated effects compared to the OT back in '97

From a purely visual standpoint TPM still holds up for the most part but every single background and creature from AOTC/ROTS would pretty much have to be redone.

It may be easier that the usual manual animation, but it IS manual. No different from when Disney cartoon animators were usin' recordings of actor's voice perfomance as reference. It's not the same as mocap, at all.

Yes. What else could it be?

Goes to show how inconsistent CGI can be. It doesn't necessarily follow a presumed path of improvement as time goes on.
