Oh god yes, this made the Wolverine look like a high school drama.

The interesting thing is that there are shades of this in The Wolverine, and you can visibly see where studio interference rears its ugly head in that film (*cough*Silver Samurai*cough*), and, while I know you don't really like Deadpool, I think we owe it a great deal, as I don't think we'd have got Logan, as we did, without the massive success it was for Fox and them finally snapping the **** out of it and saying "hey, maybe we should just take a backseat and let these artists do their thing."

Because this is following DOFP and Jackman is Wolverine in this timeline. It would have been a horrible place to recast the character given that he just kind of shows up out of nowhere with little introduction and departs rather quickly. The Weapon X scene is a highlight of the film though and I'm very happy they worked it in.

I love how with regards to the fights that they've been ratcheting up in intensity in the last few films. The Wolverine was pretty hard for a PG-13 and the Unrated Extended Cut definitely earned it's R-rating. The brief Weapon X scene in Apocalypse was pretty savage for PG-13. Honestly, I felt that Singer really got away with a PG-13 there. That probably should have pushed it to an R, but I'm sure they were like three blood streaks to short or some other trivial nonsense. And now Logan, limbs are literally flying across the screen. I love it.
If they are to make more x men films in the future, how are they going to explain Wolverine's absence? They had him at the end of DOFP, and at the end of Apocalypse, and now he's not there anymore? Weird. I like Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, and I like the movie Logan, but they shouldve recasted while they had the chance in First Class. It sucks we wont be seeing Wolverine in the xmen anymore.

Girl, Interrupted is a fine film. Knight and Day is a lot of fun. Walk the Line is solid. And hell, Kate & Leopold isn't that bad either for what it is. I loved The Wolverine. And now Logan. Mangold's a-okay in my book and he's only getting better with each film. I sincerely hope he gets the chance to direct a Bond film. He'd be perfect for it and I know he's aching to do a train sequence with Bond.

Just got back, it was great! First time in a long time that I went into a movie without knowing anything beyond the trailers and was pleasantly surprised. Those trailers didn't spoil a damn thing looking back, in fact most of the footage only featured locations in Texas.

The story was pretty depressing, but in an emotional way. I expected that though. I like how it doesn't feel like one of these cliched superhero movies and actually felt more akin to a road trip or western. A grounded third act is something I've been wanting in a superhero movie for years now. Every year I'm expecting these huge, dumb, superhero climaxes where it's a CGI fest that goes on forever. The forest near the border? That was perfect for the end to take place. Logan was more personal and genuine, something that I thought the Wolverine was lacking.

Every character was great too. I had no idea that Caliban was in this nor his relationship with Logan and Professor X. I really felt bad for his character. Donald was a great villain and I loved how he sort of admired Wolverine. Laura was fantastic. She conveyed so much without uttering a single word, pretty impressive for a child performer. I thought she was a mute initially so the whole exchanges with Logan were unexpected. The "daddy" thing at the end along with "I finally know what death feels like" hit me pretty hard. I actually teared up a little bit. :lol I thought it was a great send off to Charles and Logan and I hope they leave it at that. Then ending it with the cross turned X was the perfect ending shot to that film in regards to the X-Men. Even though most of it is a bummer (what happened to the remaining X-Men back at Westchester, the farm family that was kind enough to help Logan, Charles and Laura, the deaths, etc.), it had the right somber tone I was looking for since trailer 1 with Johnny Cash and all that. I loved how the story didn't pull any punches. The action was also glorious. I mean, we saw Wolverine go into his berserker rage in X2 (one of my favorite Wolverine scenes), but never like this. While I think a lot of the f bombs felt forced, the violence, blood and gore was perfect and that's where I think it earned it's rating. I always wanted to see Wolverine do something like this to the bad guys so boy was it a visual treat. The beginning where he's sleeping in his limo and those Cholos try to rip off his "chrome" rims perfectly demonstrated what Wolverine is capable of. That was one of my favorite action scenes along with the hotel stab out when Charles needs his medication and the whole skirmish at the end between the mercenaries, Logan and Laura. And boy what a surprise X-24 was. I was not expecting that, even after we got a glimpse of his arm and leg earlier in the film. I love when characters fight themselves (literally and figuratively), so I couldn't have been more pleased. Since X-Men in 2000, Logan's main antagonist has always been his past and himself, so I thought this was brilliant. The adamantium bullet was kind of predictable (I figured out how it was going to go down the second X-24 was revealed), but who cares. Everyone involved with this did a really great job and again, I can't think of a better send off or finale for Charles and Logan after 17 years worth of films. I loved the references to X1 and X2 and how it aligned itself more with those than any thing else.

My only nitpick with it is the Deadpool opening sequence (which my brother and my friends didn't get at their showing last night oddly enough) and the stupid little mutant kids. The Deadpool thing was lame and should have just been a trailer. The mutant kids coming out of nowhere after that strange cell phone exposition and were a dumb subplot. I did lol when some of them, including the pudgy black kid with the Wolverine figure, were running away from Donald and the Reavers. :lol

All in all, I loved it. I'll probably see it again this weekend.

EDIT:

Oh and I liked the future that was displayed here. No silly Back to the Future or Blade Runner crap. It all seemed plausible for something about 10 years from now. I loved the automated tractor trailers and vehicles.

NO SPOILER THOUGHTS REVIEW.....

I saw it this afternoon. I loved it. Great acting on Jackman and Stewart, in fact if Stewart doesn't at least get nominated for an oscar for supporting actor i would be very surprised. IMHO he was that good. There were a few fan service things I think, and any mentioned political overtones *I* don't think were necessarily over the top (yes you could garner some overtones in it) but on a whole it was finally a 'true' comic book movie on the big screen. I will for sure see it again. I would place it on par with Dark Knight as the 'best' comic book movie made. It was that good IMHO. I hope they do release a total black and white verision on DVD when it comes out, this will surely lend itself well to that medium. check out the B&W trailer which is on YT. Once you see the movie, you could for sure see this done in black and white, and it will not lose anything.

I give it 5/5 stars. I do not think it will disappoint. At my showing there were maybe 20 people in the whole theater and I would bet you at least all of us (myself included) welled up at parts in it. So yeah you get some feels with it, but hands down it's a damn great movie. Whoever said that the rest of the 'MARVEL' universe series is dead to them I agree. Seeing what has been par for the course with the current 'Marvel' crop, this is another stand out. I don't need or want silly humor scenes, or scene after scene of mega effects or hyper action shots. This is a prime example in many instances where 'less is more' and i've only used that analogy in music (as I'm a musician) sometimes even in an action 'comic' book movie, you do not need an Iron Man 3 or Winter Soldier to make the movie great. Yes, I place Logan OVER Iron Man 3 and Winter Soldier/Civil War for sure. Again my opinion YMMV.

I agree that the whole adamantium bullet thing being predictable but I did appreciate how the bullet he planned on killing himself with turned out to save his life allowing him a more fitting, heroic death.

Wow.........the final moments dead silence in the theater. It had some pull without a doubt.
Only people who've seen the past X men films wouldve cried uncontrollably. I did. When Wolvie said some things at the end of Logan, i just started remembering all the past experiences Wolvie, Professor, and the x men had together in the other xmen films, and made me cry a lot.

I teared up.....the girls were visibly upset even for a period of time afterwards. For a comic film really had a "whoa" factor for us.

I agree.

The only thing i'll give DP. :lol

I recently watched all the xmen flicks before this one

am I the only know who noticed they referenced every movie he was in briefly? The sword given to him in Wolverine, the bullet from origins, Rice's dad being killed by wolverine in Apocalypse, DOFP, the obvious call backs from X1, X2, screw the MCU, this is how you tie an expanded universe. At least I am glad we didn't see any Jean flashbacks like Wolverine, but I'm left with the question that how did Magneto die, and is rictor his comic book self where he controls seismic or they did infuse magneto's powers on him? this film was excellent, but all this time, rictor could have pulled a magneto on everyone way before.

I don't remember Rice's dad being killed by Wolverine in Apoc. :lol

How did all those other kids get up to the rendezvous point on their own anyways?

That little chubby black kid running thru the woods was funny as all hell though.
