Re: WOLVERINE (March 3rd 2017)

Suicide Squad was another example of how studio interference can lead to a mild/neutered version of what should have been pretty edgy and interesting (though in that case they definitely made the right move, because the kiddies flocked out to see it).

Yeah this was me and SS's target audience rushing back to see it a second time:

Re: WOLVERINE (March 3rd 2017)

I thought Bishop was a'aight. But then again, I don't care much about anything coming from the '90s, so I didn't have any strong expectations about the guy. Ice Man could have been handled better, since he was a core team member, and was essentially the post-Wolfman Wally West of the original team. I thought Juggy was fine, though he looked a bit silly. In the comics I read, he was never more than a superpowered thug, so I don't need him to have the personality or depth of Ra's al Ghul. But I suppose everyone that was in X3 got tainted by the experience.

My issues with Juggy wasn't his personality... or his lack of depth. My first issue was that they made him a mutant, when in fact he's not a mutant. He actually hates mutants and the fact people think he's a mutant. The second issue is the way he looks. Dude looked like he was in to S&M or something, not to mention he was always without his helmet and even the helmet sucked because it didn't cover his face. Terrible. He was also too small and not even close to being as powerful as he should be. And finally, they jumped the shark when they literally had Juggy say, "I'm the Juggernaut b****!" because that was from an internet meme...how cheesy is that? :dunno

Re: WOLVERINE (March 3rd 2017)

I hope you're right. Certainly, Suicide Squad was another example of how studio interference can lead to a mild/neutered version of what should have been pretty edgy and interesting (though in that case they definitely made the right move, because the kiddies flocked out to see it). But on the other hand, being violent and X-treme isn't enough in itself. You need a story that is well told, that has a good flow to it, and gives the characters opportunity to relate to the audience on an emotional level. That's what will set any movie apart. If you get Eli Roth to do a Wolverine movie, it will be gory, sure, but. . .

What Aronofsky was planning was nothing like what Mangold ultimately [had] to do.

The film opened with Wolverine in a Canadian prison, being visited by Shingen Yashida who tells him he'll free him if he'll come to Japan and kill for him. We then see Wolvie as Shingen's enforcer currently engaged in a turf war with the Yakuza. Wolverine is secretly hooking up with Shingen's daughter Mariko - but Shingen knows and eventually uses that as leverage against him. The first act ends with Shingen's son Kenuichio torturing a man who owed Shingen money in front of his family and in front of Wolvie - who gets sick of being a soldier for Shingen and seemingly kills everyone in the room (Kenuichio survives). Wolvie then tries to run off with Mariko but Shingen interferes, revealing he's forcing Mariko to marry the Minister of Justice. He then challenges Wolverine to a fight promising that if Wolvie wins he'll let him run off with Mariko. If Wolvie loses, he must leave Japan and never contact her again. Shingen easily beats him into submission using a bo staff.

The second act is about Wolvie coping with the depression over the loss by hooking up with a stranger he meets in a bar. She ends up being Yukio, who takes him on an insane tour of sex & drugs. She later confides to him that the Yakuza want her dead. His reaction is to brutally kill as many Yakuza bosses as possible. During one of the assassinations, at an opera house, he blends into the show by putting on a costume that closely resembles his orange and brown suit from the comics. Mariko ends up being in the audience and watches him butcher all the Yakuza present. After that Yukio betrays him, revealing that she was working for Shingen all along - who used his romantic anguish to dispatch all of his Yakuza enemies. Wolvie then throws her off her penthouse. Wolvie then teams up with a Yakuza boss he kidnaps that wants Shingen dead. The boss helps him track down Ogun - the man who trained Shingen and commanded The Hand for many years. Wolverine finds four-foot-tall Ogun in a hidden temple in rural Japan along with 99 ninja (who all have Wolverine's signature hair). Ogun trains Wolverine in hopes that he will kill Shingen and take over as leader of The Hand. He explains that when he retired, Shingen tried to take over The Hand but half of its members rejected him and followed Ogun into seclusion.

Third act opens six months later with the fully trained Wolverine revealing himself at one of Shingen's nightclubs - where he encounters Shingen's Hand followers and Kenuichio. He kills everyone. He then storms Shingen's estate where the rest of Shingen's Hand chapter attack him as Mariko watches. He kills the first dozen but then Ogun's hand chapter appears and Shingen's men pull back and rejoin their estranged brethren. Shingen then engages Wolvie with a real sword this time - which he explains has been in his family a thousand years dating back to an ancestor called Muramasa Shingen who forged the sword with a metal he found in a rock that fell from the sky. The two fight as The Hand and Mariko watch. Shingen eventually gets the upper hand and stabs Wolverine in the heart, seemingly paralyzing him. As Wolvie collapses, Shingen gives him his back and begins to berate the ninja, calling them "fools" like Ogun. Suddenly, all of the ninja begin to remove their masks. Shingen turns around to find Wolvie standing, who then removes the sword from his chest and decapitates Shingen. Soon after, Mariko becomes head of the family and for a bit the two enjoy their unopposed union. Then she dies in a carbomb courtesy of the Yakuza. Wolvie and the Hand (who now follows him everywhere) retaliate and kill everyone left in the organization in some very gruesome ways. Wolvie's Yakuza contact reaches out to Wolvie and reveals Noburo, The Minister of Justice - who is also a major Yakuza boss, ordered the hit. Wolvie spares him and storms Noburo's office. Noburo tells Wolvie he'll spend his life in prison if he hurts him. Wolverine kills him.

The script ends with Wolverine back in prison, being visited by a guy who offers to grant him his freedom if he agrees to kill for "Department H". Wolverine agrees and we learn that on the rooftop of the prison are all the members of The Hand just waiting for his release.

Would have made an amazing film. Specially with Aronofsky's intimate style of directing.

Whenever I watch The Wrestler and The Fountain, I instantly get flashes of the great Wolverine movie that never happened.

Honestly... sounds like a very boring and themeless story.

Re: WOLVERINE (March 3rd 2017)

The Wolverine wasn't great, but I liked it. The fight with the chicks dad was kewl.

And I want a X3 Juggernaut Hot Toyz.......

Re: WOLVERINE (March 3rd 2017)

Yea I'd love one just like the top marvel toy, but the Hot Toys version would just be a immobile rubber ball. :lol

One like the Toys News pic would work!

Re: WOLVERINE (March 3rd 2017)

__

And this is me in the parallel universe of justice:

yRyFwKs.gif

I will gladly take that bullet for watching it twice in one day.

It is the only Transformers movie I don't own.

There are elements of 1/2/3 that I enjoy, especially the 3D one in Chicago and the 1st one.

I will be knocking the kids out of the way.

:lol
