Re: WOLVERINE (March 3rd 2017)

I will gladly take that bullet for waching it twice in one day.
You are insane, man... That'd be a waste of ammo.
Here's what you deserve instead:

Re: WOLVERINE (March 3rd 2017)

What Aronofsky was planning was nothing like what Mangold ultimately [had] to do.
. . .

Would have made an amazing film. Specially with Aronofsky's intimate style of directing.

Whenever I watch The Wrestler and The Fountain, I instantly get flashes of the great Wolverine movie that never happened.
We're in agreement that Aranofsky is a great filmmaker. And it's very likely any Wolvie film he would have done would be miles better than what we got. But again, you take that same plot, and let a mediocre or uninspired filmmaker take it on, or if the writing itself isn't good, or if the acting and drama aren't well done, and then you've got crap. It takes a lot of moving parts working together the right way for a film to really succeed, to my eyes. And that's why many of them don't. I think this applies to movies that have good and bad, like X-Men Apocalypse, which I really enjoyed, but acknowledge has some serious flaws, primarily related to pacing, structure, and a WTF coda involving Magneto. And Suicide Squad, which was a good idea in principle and had great actors and a pretty good director, but had similar, albeit much more glaring flaws, compounded by a studio sanitizing things for a PG-13 rating and mass audience appeal. I'm hoping the stars align the right way for the next Wolvie movie. He has really been my favorite comic book superhero since I was 6 or 7, with Batman and Spidey probably a tie for close second. So it pains me that we haven't seen him really utilized better. No equivalent of Nolan Dark Knight treatment thus far.

Re: WOLVERINE (March 3rd 2017)

Aranofsky's proposed take on Batman was so awful I don't want him near any pre-existing character that I care about.

Re: WOLVERINE (March 3rd 2017)

I don't think I've heard of that. But I could imagine it being a good film that totally misses the mark re: Batman. Dark Knight Rises is arguably in that category.

Re: WOLVERINE (March 3rd 2017)

The Batman I know doesn't mope around for 8 years, return to the cape for about 30 minutes, then decide he's done a good enough job and quit after he facilitates the murder of Bane and Talia al Ghul, and leaves all his equipment and fortune (?) behind to some random cop. But. . .that's just me!

In a away Aranofsky's take might have been easier to digest because it is completely wacky from the start. I was one of the minority who was disappointed with TDK because I liked the mishmash of origin, Ninja action, Scarecrow scheming, and mafia in Begins. I find normal human organized crime the least interesting part of he Batman mythos and even with Joker that's essentially what TDK is. And of course smitten Bruce desperate to hand off the cowl so he can hit that turtlepuss.

Re: WOLVERINE (March 3rd 2017)

You said "a good film" which is incorrect, that's all.
Ah, well, compared to the other Nolan films I don't think it's particularly good. But if you can remove it from that context, I think it is good. I enjoyed it, but thought it was pretty flawed. Though I have no evidence at all to support this, I'm convinced Nolan got roped into a 3 film deal and only did it to fulfill his contract. I figure he did the best he could, but had long lost interest at that point (in part due to the death of Ledger), so he just went through the motions. But a great director like him going through the motions is significantly better than a Brett Ratner, Michael Bay, or Zach Snyder at their very best.

turtlepuss.

Nothing about TDKR felt like he was "going through the motions".

He set out to make a "David Lean epic". He even had the crew watch LAWRENCE OF ARABIA & DOCTOR SHIVAGO in 70mm before principal photography started.

The film is ultimately a Bruce Wayne movie first and a Batman movie second. It perfectly closes the Batman chapter that both saved and cursed Wayne. Alfred's speech to him before he leaves is the culmination of ten years of watching someone torture themselves to the point that you just can't anymore. Alfred had figured out only death or escape could save Bruce, and Bruce was welcoming death.

Its a brilliant story. Never understood the fandom's gripe with it. The Lazarus Pit, the battle in downtown Gotham, The Mercenary and the Warlord's daughter, Caine killing it, Hardy's superb take on Bane, The Gordon/Blake tag team, Matthew Modine, the sewer fight, The opening with Aidan Gillen, Ben Mendelsohn, Zimmer's score, the brilliant closing shot of Wayne and Selina at the cafe...

10/10 for me.

Re: WOLVERINE (March 3rd 2017)

I agree with all that, but I wouldn't give the film a 10. In fact, I wouldn't give a 10 to any of the Batman films, but that's just me :lol

Anyway, this is just going to be another pointless debate so let me start some of the typical complaints.

Ugly Batman suit
Ugly Batwing
Ugly Bat voice
Batman retired ( never happens apparently :lol)
Fight choreography
Not enough Batman
Bane not big enough (that's what she said)
Bane not dressed like an 80's Mexican wrestler
Small percentage of cops trapped underground :lol
The name Robin
Bruce getting back into Gotham...even though other people got into Gotham very easily.
Talia's death scene/acting...yeah that's bad :lol
Batman logo on bridge
Batman retired...again :lol

Its a brilliant story.
For a one-shot comic book.
It made no sense at all to use this kind of story as a sequel to previous two films. He wanted to quit in the first movie, then in the second... The last one starts with him bein' in a quit zone for years then suddenly returning only to quit permanently. It was just very poorly thought out.

Bruce's goal was to rid Gotham of organized crime and end corruption. Not to be "The Batman" forever. He talks about it all throughout TDK, how he'll stop if the police have control again.

Harvey's martyrdom granted the cops control via the Dent Act. Batman took the blame for the murders and disappeared as Gotham went into "peace time".

He only comes back because Talia's chapter of the LOS are trying to nuke Gotham. Once he averts that crisis he calls it quits - because again, Bruce's Batman persona was an ideal implemented to cleanse Gotham as a way to avenge his parents. It was never meant to be an ongoing thing for this version of Bruce. Comics Wayne never stops. Nolan's real-world Wayne realized that in order for him to move on from his parents dying he had to kill The Batman. He had to let go, the way Alfred hoped he would one day.

Story made perfect sense.

Re: WOLVERINE (March 3rd 2017)

Bruce's goal was to rid Gotham of organized crime and end corruption.
Which is impossible.
Such utopian thinking leads only to totalitarian state.
Power will always be abused, corrupted or not.
End of story.

It even ended with "Robin" discoverin' batcave which hints on him becoming the next Batman.

That's why as Bruce's story ends, Blake's story begins. A Dark Knight retires as a Dark Knight Rises.

Bruce found peace and was able to leave the cowl behind. Blake on the other hand still has demons to wrestle.
