read again. You edited out the "In this sense" part of my statement. I never said we have no free will.
But my syntax was misleading. Instead of "If I have free will and come to a fork in the road..." I should have said "I have free will and if I come to a fork in the road..."

I can make ANY decision that I want to make...

Except you won't. Your life is already written, every decision you made and will make is already determined, just none of us can see it. Your death and destiny, like guests at a party, are smartly dressed and patiently waiting for your arrival. At that fork in the road, you can make ANY decision you wish but you will always pick 1 and it will always be the same 1; you can go left, but you never will. Control is a bit of an illusion.

So, yes, we have free will. But just because you can strip naked, cover yourself in strawberry jam and run down the street singing tunes from Oklahoma! doesn't mean you will. But if there were a God, she'd know you were going to do it. ;)

Eh, I've never been a believer in destiny. Makes great stories, but in real life, not so much. Maybe its just because I'm a control freak. I also don't believe everything we will do is already known.

Ok, how bout this? Lemme couch it in some science.

Given your nature and nurture, the particular biological and environmental conditions that have made you who you are and causes you to think and behave in the manner that you do, when standing at a fork in the road (or whatever other choice you wish to substitute), you will always make the same decision and respond to that particular stimulus in exactly the same way in that particular moment in space and time. You will always choose 'x'. 'X' is your destiny. While you could have picked 'y', who you are at that moment will always bring you to the decision of 'x'. There is no 'alternate timeline' where you picked 'y'. So while it seems you are making a choice, and "in control", since you will never choose 'y', it's really not much of a choice.

Like what? quantum field theory, quantum mechanics, the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle?

As I understand them relating to the functions and structure of systems and waves and particles and physics and not the decision making of organisms, I'd say no, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on the subject.

I'll be honest quantum theory is way above my IQ level. I've tried to understand it, but most of it just goes flying over my head like a jet. But my understanding is that it's quantum theory that paved the way for the theory of multiple parallel universes. The exact theories and explanations of that is, like I said, over my head. Maybe I've got too much sci-fi mixing with my knowledge of real science. :dunno

Ah, yeah I'm not a proponent of the multiverse theory.

When getting into the minutiae of quarks and random radioactive decay, my brain begins to glaze over too. I'd recommend The Elegant Universe by Brian Greene. He's able to simplify and explain a bunch of these complex ideas.

PS Schrödinger's cat is dead! :monkey5

I'm not sure if I believe in the multiverse, but I believe the possibility exists.

Thanks for the book recommendation. I'll look into that because I do find quantum theory fascinating, and its used so much in Sci-Fi I like to know how much of it is (possibly) reality and how much is just "let's make ^^^^ up and call it quantum so we can do what we want with the plot".

And alive too. ;)

Re-watching some of season 1 now and I had forgotten what a malevolent presence they gave Locke; music cues, camera moves, creepy Terry O'Quinn squinting in the sun and waxing on about this and that, seemingly calm and in control.

which came first?????..........the giant or the entropy..:dunno

Entropy comes last. The leveler of all things. Balance and equilibrium. You cannot fight it. It cannot be resisted. ;)

dictionary.com defines entropy as :

1. Symbol S For a closed thermodynamic system, a quantitative measure of the amount of thermal energy not available to do work.
2. A measure of the disorder or randomness in a closed system.
3. A measure of the loss of information in a transmitted message.
4. The tendency for all matter and energy in the universe to evolve toward a state of inert uniformity.
5. Inevitable and steady deterioration of a system or society.

i guess that sounds right & it sure seems to fit into lost rather well ..............:lol
