I don't understand this "Athiests don't like the ending" thing.

Sorry if it seemed that way. I was just noting what I had observed among my family and friends with whom I had watched it and was curious if other people found the same to be true in their circles.

I'm not picking you as a direct source or quote. It was just a general vibe I have gotten from various posts etc. So no need to be sorry.

I'm a Lost fan since the beginning and I have never said anything or have participated in forums to discuss about it. But I had to say this....

WONDERFUL . I LOVE LOST:clap:clap:clap:clap:clap:clap:clap:clap:clap

This show openly declared its belief that there is something more for our souls after we die. Many viewers will reject that notion. It is also a work of fiction, and I can see viewers watching and enjoying the finale as a work of fiction without adopting/agreeing with its depiction of the afterlife.

I don't personally believe in a post-death purgatory/limbo period in which our souls unknowingly go on about their business unless enlightened by a loved one and encouraged to move on. But I was still touched by the expression on Hurley's face when he saw Charlie again in the motel doorway. As a viewer, I appreciated those "awakening" moments as they fit into the rules of the show--even if they weren't my own personal rules.

so you never quite find out what the island is, how it brought them there, how dahrma knew about it etc?

the island is a character onto itself, no real closure for the island?

Jacob brought them there, Dharma knew about it because science had advanced to the point where they were able to investigate it. You never find out what the island is, but they do go into more detail in the final season.

You get closure from the actual characters, not the location. None of the characters in the story could've known it's origins, so it makes sense the viewer wouldn't find them out either.

Watcing the Jimmy Kimmel show right now from last night. I agree with a bit of something he said at the start that the show was a lot about Jack's Journey more than anything.

Wow, I have a lot of catching up to do in this thread, so sory if this has been touched on already, but:

the more I think about it, the more I thin k that David (Jack's son) is the key to understanding the nature of the flash sideways...

I think to call it "purgatory" is an over-simplification.

It doesn't seem contrived to anyone that they all had to move on together? That part was a bit hokey, I thought. :dunno

It was the most important time of their lives, so not really. A number of characters didn't move on with them, which makes it even less hokey. See : Ben, who no doubt was waiting to move on with Alex.

As enlightened Locke explained--Jack didn't really have a son.

It might be contrived, but I think it was appropriate for the show--how many times was it said that they had they had to all be together for something to work, or have we heard the old "live together, die alone" phrase. They wanted to end things with that same sense of community, so I am willing to forgive them if it feels a little forced as an afterlife requirement.

And I get that, but to me it just seemed like they really forced the "live together" theme a bit much; but then again I didn't care too much for the entire sideways scheme in the first place.

Yep, and it sucks balls...
But watchu gonna do, right?... :dunno

Continue to question until my dying day!!! :wink1:

ask the man you meet when ya die, if no one there then u were right :D

That's what I'm afraid of... :lol

Lonnie, it just seems that if there is a constant in the universe, it is that there is a ying to every yang.

What's the yang for disease? war? accidental death? misery? hunger? etc?

We will all receive these answers, eventually, in our own time.

IMO

:lecture

:monkey3

Oh, and I'm not sure when I'll be in Austin- I think I'm flying in on Monday. I will let you guys know though, as soon as I do. :D

I'm afraid I'll never receive an answer... once gone, there is nothing more...

Exactly!!! :goodpost:

Here you go:

That plus Skittles.

But didn't Jack die alone? And no, I don't count Vincent...

He did die alone, but I think that's why they wanted to show that his soul would go on to "live together" with his loved ones. But the last shot of the show was his eye closing. Maybe the group hug was all just in his mind in the final moments of life. It might be noteworthy that the show didn't end with the glowing light filling the church, but with a man collapsing and passing away in isolation. (Apart from man's best friend.) That was the final word.

Health? Peace? Happiness? Content?

Not sure there is a yang for accidental death unless it's a serendipitous pregnancy. :lol

I like Tom's answer better though. :O

Well the yang for accidental death would have to be accidental pregnancy which I was a victim of :lol

Just a reminder to some or letting others know. You can own a piece of lost this summer. They will be having a huge auction with tons of props. Kinda like what they did with BSG I believe....

To me, this might be the best explanation of the sideways world yet... everything was in Jack's mind right before he passed... makes more sense that way.

So we can't have peace, happiness and contentment without knowing war, misery and hunger? And we wouldn't know health without disease? Or would we just not know we have those things without the others?
