Blue Flame of the West/Mod
I think they were more inspired by the play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, where two minor characters are brought to the foreground in a retelling of story events (in this case, Shakespeare's Hamlet) while the "real" plot with the "main" characters is going on in the background. (The basic premise was also used in The Lion King 1 1/2--only in that movie the two background characters don't die in the end.)
Here are a few quotes from the play that seem appropriate for Lost:
"Consider—One: Probability is a factor which operates within natural forces. Two: Probability is not operating as a factor. Three: We are now held within un-, sub-, or supernatural forces."
"The scientific approach to the examination of phenomena is a defence against the pure emotion of fear."
"Half of what he said meant something else and the other half didn't mean anything at all."
"Be happy-if you're not even happy what's so good about surviving? We'll be all right. I suppose we just go on."
"What could we possibly have in common except our situation?"
"Events must play themselves out to aesthetic, moral and logical conclusion... we aim at the point where everyone who is marked for death dies... "
"All your life you live so close to truth it becomes a permanent blur in the corner of your eye."
"I congratulate you on the unambiguity of your situation."
(Well, maybe not that last one...)
