I think they were more inspired by the play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, where two minor characters are brought to the foreground in a retelling of story events (in this case, Shakespeare's Hamlet) while the "real" plot with the "main" characters is going on in the background. (The basic premise was also used in The Lion King 1 1/2--only in that movie the two background characters don't die in the end.)

Here are a few quotes from the play that seem appropriate for Lost:

"Consider—One: Probability is a factor which operates within natural forces. Two: Probability is not operating as a factor. Three: We are now held within un-, sub-, or supernatural forces."

"The scientific approach to the examination of phenomena is a defence against the pure emotion of fear."

"Half of what he said meant something else and the other half didn't mean anything at all."

"Be happy-if you're not even happy what's so good about surviving? We'll be all right. I suppose we just go on."

"What could we possibly have in common except our situation?"

"Events must play themselves out to aesthetic, moral and logical conclusion... we aim at the point where everyone who is marked for death dies... "

"All your life you live so close to truth it becomes a permanent blur in the corner of your eye."

"I congratulate you on the unambiguity of your situation."

(Well, maybe not that last one...)

Yeah but did they also include a scene in a strip club with Lando? I didn't think so.

Actually, I think the London production did in fact include such a scene.

Tom, you beautiful genius! I hadn't put together the R&G references, but it's obvious once mentioned. From the "Who's Nikki/Paulo?" corresponding to the confusion of R&G's identities - it's all pretty blatant. My favorite Stoppard play - and a pretty good movie.

However it was the Stratford upon Avon Royal Shakespeare production that featured Billy Dee and a pimp cane.

I love this week's episode! I LOVE REUNIONS! Did they reshoot parts of the season 1 episode just for this ep?

Here are the titles/centric characters of upcoming episodes.

4/4 - Left Behind - Kate
4/11 - One of Us - Juliet
4/18 - Catch-22 - Desmond
4/25 - D.O.C. - Jin/Sun
5/2 - The Brig - Jack
5/9 - The Man Behind the Curtain - DHARMA
5/16 - Greatist Hits - Charlie

A Dharma flashback should be awesome! and the title of that episode is another Wizard of Oz reffrence.

A THIRD Jack flashback before Charlie's first? Jack is a dork. I don't think anyone likes him anymore, why so many of his pointless episodes? The Dharma episode should be great, I wonder if it is Ben's flashback or if his specifically is being saved for the season finale.

I think most of it, they just "added" or super-imposed Nikki and Paulo. But, some stuff was altogether new I think. Like at the airport w/Boone and Shannon.

If you were paying attention to the credits in the beginning it said "guest starring" Maggie Grace (Shannon) and Ian (can't remember his last name) who played Boone.

I think people still like him, but he annoys me. I think he has some serious anger issues, seems like he screams at everyone. Maybe I'm too hard on him though. I guess I would be cranky if I were stranded on an island too.

I know Jack acts anal sometimes... I am 100% positive that Jack knows some very important information about the others and the island that we and the other cast aways do not know. This could be the cause of the short temper he has had lately.

Did anyone noticed Jack's new tatoo?

It's always been there, but it's not that visible considering it's location. But you can clearly see it during the "live together or die alone" speech in season 2.

Did he know the secret when he was in Thailand freaking out at the tattoo girl?

You know, I think I'm only watching this show for Juliet now. Kate doesn't stand a chance if Juliet sets her sights on Jack.

And now that the Village is empty wouldn't your first job as leader be to move everyone into it? Electricity, roofs, and a fence that keeps the black smoke away - why not just move in?

Absolutely! They need to reclaim those Dharma barracks ASAP if the Others don't want them any longer and are heading back to their real home on the island.

And I am really starting to like Juliet. I can't wait for her flashback next week.

I thought this was another really good episode.

Maybe it was a red herring, but when Kate was watching the Others put on their gas masks, there was a blond woman who I thought was Juliet. You couldn't see her face, but she was dressed just like her.

How is it that Kate and Juliet woke up in the jungle, fought, hid from the monster, slept and then went all the way back to the village to find Jack still knocked out?

And why was the smoke monster flashing (You know what I mean)? Was it giving some kind of message? Was it reading them?

I liked the line Kate had about not knowing what the hell was going on. No kidding!

Yeah, last nights show was good. I agree they should move back into those houses and set up shop. I love all the mystery and lack of answers because it allows me to think about what they may be trying to do with the show. That's the best part. I do wish someone would shoot Locke right between the eyes though.

Moving into the village would be a good idea, except what if the Others have it set up so they can monitor it? Nothing like being paranoid, eh? I think next weeks episode will be good, I think we might get a couple other tidbits. I missed the beginning. What happened with Locke?

I agree they should definitely move back into that village. It's not like they are any safer from the Others when they're on the beach, so they might as well move in and get comfortable. I'm sure they'll probably discuss this in coming episodes...? Unless Locke blows up the village with C4. Speaking of Locke... He's done a few bonehead things, but I still like him. I wonder what the heck is going on with his dad on the island?? Crazy.

And I'm glad to see the writers working a little mystery back into the island... When the show first started there was a very distinct 'paranormal' feeling to the place...Most of which has more or less been explained practically (or just plain discarded by the writers). Glad they are rekindling that feeling a bit, hopefully they will develop the smoke monster into something more than the giant MacGuffin it currently is.

I like Locke too, he has a certain depth to him in that we really don't know what the heck is going on in his mind.
