Slightly ajar mouth really works well with Hamill, too bad we haven't seen an attempt since the Bespin sculpt.

I agree, it almost is a signature look for him in ANH too. We do have to keep in mind that with the mouth open it effects not only the jaw line but can thin out the face too. Hamill has an interesting face where at times it looks long (especially in ANH when younger) and other times when it looks more round. His nose also looks different all the time even in the same movies depending on the angles. The hair also throws things off regardless of how "good" or "bad" the hair sculpts are. Both the SS one and the HT, and the Bespin ones, all look more like Hamill without the hair on - it's weird.

It would make for interesting reading!

You're in that thread so you know the story so far.

It was supposed that the major player who recommended the factory was Sideshow...

Pre-ordered and paid for Mal back in June 2014, and was looking forward to building the crew of Serenity. At this rate none of us would live long enough to wait for them all!

Must be the same guys who set the schedule for SSCs LOTR line (cancelled), Indy line (cancelled) and GIJoe line (cancelled) :slap

Whatever the reason, genuine inability, lack of desire or just complacence, there is an undeniable fact that Sideshow's production does not match their prototypes. Forget if they are comparable to Hot Toys or not, that's a subject the will forever be in debate, and one based on opinion anyway. What isn't in debate is that Sideshow continues to show prototypes that are a misrepresentation of the final products. There's a general understanding that what is shown in trade shows, conventions and used to sell the product are indeed prototypes, but one thing Sideshow is more guilty of than any other contemporary sixth scale company is their dramatic drop off from proto to production. A lot of the hate that gets lobbed at Sideshow could easily be avoided if they would just present a better, or more realistic, prototype the use to sell their products. When you leave customers feeling baited by a proto that doesn't properly reflect what they are gonna receive in-hand, how can you not expect a back lash?

HT is far from perfect, their likeness' are often lacking, they sometimes have products the fall apart or deteriorate over time, or have overly fragile products that can be easily damaged if not handled properly. And likely a few other things people can point to as problematic areas that they could address. But one thing HT almost never does, is produce a proto that grossly misrepresents what customers will receive in production, often times even release a superior product to what was advertised.

I'm not defending Sideshow or Hot Toys, both are flawed in their own ways, but Sideshow shots themselves in the foot when they tease a superb prototype only to drop the ball in production.

Now I need a nap. All those words.,.....:monkey4

Well to be fair, this has always been an issue with Sideshow. This is the company that solicited Stormtrooper Luke and Han and presented pics of the pair in a way that made it look like they had modified the Luke body to get the proper height when in reality, they just photographed Luke at an angle to Han making him appear shorter.

I never really thought of SSCs as a really trustworthy company after that. Kinda a watershed moment for me as it relates to what they seem to be dedicated to. Meaning, its less about the fans and more about the money....and some would say as it should be. But I admittedly drank the Kool-Aid when they first started producing Star Wars figs talking about producing "museum quality" figures done with high accuracy because they were fans of the products too. I'm sure they are but only to a point.

That being said, I acknowledge that they will never get HTs quality without having a full time rep from the company at the factory. The production just has too many variables to be phoned in.

Let's take a look at this...

I'm actually surprised the SS is as close as it is. It's a very close call...

Neither got the nose right. Both have the mouth right. Only HT got the cleft. The eyes... look dead to me on the SS, wider or not. The hair... well....

Looking at these two i'm starting to wish for a repainted version of my original sideshow sculpt. For a 2.0 ANH the sideshow version is pretty bad. Not a big fan of the hot toys sculpt too. That hair piece is the worst and i don't see luke. But again at these prices hot toys at least looks human. Shame on you sideshow (again). Already skipped on the entire hoth line because of the bad sculpts. Now also skipping the tie pilot. For the old sideshow prices i would have bought this. Outfit looks good to me.

Best,

Robert

The facial sculpt of the SS looks like it might possibly be better, but how can one tell as its covered once again by awful paint and fake looking hair. I am not proficient at repainting head sculpts so to me personally it's kind of irrelevant at this price point. I'm not going to pay $260 shipped and replace the head, and possibly the body too. Could be $350ish by the time I am through

With regards to Luke's x-wing helmet I want to share with you a post from a co-member at RPF.

Yeah, I looked at that helmet posting over a couple of weeks ago. The SSC helmet just doesn't have anywhere near enough weathering (only the rarely used Yavin base helmet shown at top looks like that) and while the sculpt overall seems solid, the decals/paint colors don't seem quite right. To me, it's one of the things that subtly pulls the figure in the toy direction as opposed to 1/6 replica.

It's a bit nitpicky for sure, but at $250 I just feel a little nitpicky is okay.

I'd rather have less weathering than over-done weathering. The former can be modified easier than the later.

Also, I'm surprised that no one else has brought it up yet, but Timewalker Toys has this figure, along with the Hoth Han and Luke for sale at a nice discount. I got the X-wing Luke for $215.00 shipped. ($204 + $11 shipping).

I considered the Luke X-Wing from there, but when I did the math it was only $15 less than SS (with a coupon, counting rewards), and with no exclusive. Still want to see more in hand shots but if it looks good i'd bite at 20% off. Wanted to display with the helmet on anyway, so the tailoring of the flight suit and just overall look with the helmet on is pretty important.

Yep, I figured that the "glove holding hands" were not worth the difference. My main concern is with the head sculpt. If it's a fail, then either I keep the helmet on or pick up the HT Luke in ST disguise, convert it to a regular ST and somehow plop the Luke noggin on the X-wing figure...

Yeah, there are tons of alternative options with this figure, with your plan being the leading one (though I may try to acquire the regular Tatooine head sculpt as the hair is removable). And the exclusive is definitely not much of a factor, but for me still worth assigning some value when assessing a deal. I figure if we're seeing deals during the pre-order stage there'll be more to come. :lol

Back in the day of the first Kenner 12" figures I always wanted a pilot Luke. Of all the ANH figures coming out only Chewie was more anticipated than this one for me. I have to say I'm pretty pleased how he turned out.
