What's awesome about collecting is that we actually have the choice of buying or not buying and if we do or don't that's each collector's decision!
But some people don't think so, apparently we all need to rebel against Mattel! [emoji38]

That's like a heroin addict proclaiming they can stop shooting up at any time. They say they have a choice, but in all actuality they really don't because of the nature of addiction. The only people who actually have a choice are those who can beat the addiction, and from what I've seen, most MOTUC collectors in particular can't stop even if they wanted to. All while denying there's anything wrong with the product, and praising the company that makes said product.

If you dislike Mattel so much do you collect MOTUC?? You seem one of the most prolific posters in this thread, but you never seem to have anything positive to say about Matty or MOTUC. I have had issues with Mattel since 200x, but never enough to interfere with my enjoyment of MOTU. I collect what I like and skip what I don't. As for me I'm generally happy with most of the releases. There have been very few that I didn't like and a some that I have skipped. I have never personally had any issues with DR. While Matty has it its issues they haven't been anything to stop me from enjoying the line.

Some people like to think the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. Every company and toy line has their issues and Mattel/MOTUC is no exception, but the good far outweighs the bad for me and that's why I still buy them. I truly enjoy collecting them.

If there was anything positive about Mattel to speak of, I would most definitely boast about it.

I am a fan of MOTU as a whole and I do have a grand collection of vintage and the newer MOTUC variety, so I do enjoy the line. I don't enjoy the collecting process due to all the BS that goes along with it, which is why I always maintain that years from now when the line is truly done and forgotten, I can stand back and look at my collection and appreciate it for what it is. Many of the figures are flawed, and it goes beyond personal opinion when the majority agree that certain figures weren't done very well. From what I see, most people are well aware of the problems with the company and the MOTUC line, but many simply dismiss it or revise history for the sake of their own personal enjoyment of the line not being tainted by truth.

I do have a huge problem with Mattel. However, I'm beginning to think I have more of a problem with the fans who set a precedence for Mattel to do what they do. As much as I bad mouth the company, I feel it's justified. If Mattel focused more on providing a close to perfect product instead of short changing people, doing a half fast job on figures and play sets, there would be far, far less rancor from my tongue. Do other companies have issues? Does their product sometimes have quality issues? Sure! But Mattel never admits when they are in the wrong, and they certainly never go the extra mile to make things right while other companies do.

I'm also tired of the "MOTUC is a niche line" and "MOTU as a property isn't nearly as popular as Batman", etc. statements. This simply isn't the case when MOTUC has been selling extremely well for over 8 years and counting. For example: Batman the animated series is more of a cult following rather than mainstream Batman as a whole. The DC Collectibles Batman the animated series line is doing very well. They had problems in the beginning and they nipped it in the bud. They don't ask fans to commit to subs, and their prices are MUCH more reasonable. This proves that some companies actually give a crap, and are able to see past profit margins, etc. Mattel is pure evil greed compared to other toy companies.

Ultimately, I compare my rants to a father who cares deeply about their kids. Father is strict because he cares, if father wasn't strict and lets his kids do whatever they wanted, and didn't teach them right from wrong, it shows he really doesn't care about his kids. I care about MOTUC, and I'm harsh (strict) with Mattel because they refuse to maintain a consistent standard of quality in the product. If Mattel did the right thing consistently, there would be more praise. I view many customers as fathers who don't care enough, and let Mattel do whatever they want.

I grew up watching MOTU, and I have fond memories on the television show as well as the toys. As an adult, just hearing about the way Mattel chooses to do business and seeing what people put up with has turned me off from ever purchasing their products. The world has enough plastic crap already. Be choosy, and move on. :wink1:

Of course, I'm praying they don't resurrect the Dino-Riders. I'd dislike them even more. You leave my TYCO products alone!

:lol

I think it's worth pointing out that we had zero clue about the process and brand business as kids. We also had no interenet to communicate to or about Mattel.

Most of us here (note I said most) are gown ups now. We are now more savvy to business, we care moreas it's our money and not moms and we have internet allowing people to voice their opinion publicly.

As far as I can see Mattel haven't changed. We are just more aware. Least that is what I think.

I don't know. I think although the sculpting of Mattel's toys from the 80's and the execution of their functionality minus action features wasn't nearly what it is today, those toys still hold up over time, where as MOTUC do not. Maybe Mattel as a company in terms of it's ethics hasn't changed, but the quality of their product certainly has.

I agree with you.

The Talon Fighter looks awesome but I just can't seem to get myself to pull the trigger. $145 shipped. I guess it feels less essential to me than the other vehicles so far.

I bought it last year when they were offering free shipping and sold the Teela figure to pay for more than half the total cost. You can still get good money for her on eBay if you only want Point Dread and the Talon Fighter.

That surprises me; isn't that maybe the worst Teela figure ever made?

There aren't very many Teelas to begin with and the original MOTUC version commands a very high price. Something happened with the main face sculpt in production, but the helmeted head, body, and accessories are all nice. She's in a very expensive set that wasn't sold on Matty Collector for months until now and I'm betting not many have parted her out which is what has kept prices high. Just look at completed listings on eBay:

I suppose Point Dread Teela is the only option besides Battleground Teela if someone doesn't want to pay upwards of $150 for the original MOTUC Teela. I think I'd rather pay the premium for the original MOTUC Teela on ebay instead of paying a premium for PD Teela, which is probably one of the worst looking figures in the line.
Normally I'd say I can't believe people are paying that kind of money for PD Teela but... Alas, these are MOTUC collectors we're talking about. :rolleyes2
