I like politics, at least when it has a chance to go right. I wish our system was a bit more comfortable for the common man, but I can't do much about that.

I just know that our country can be great with proper leadership, and it's only natural to want to try to be a part of the process of selection. We want to know what our leaders are about, so that if they skew too far from that, we can hold them accountable.

I don't like the drama as much, though, but I do love discussion... Best to share and not perpetuate the "ostrich syndrome". If people said nothing and stayed out of politics, nothing could stop the politicians from saying that "we the people" agree with their radical ideas. Our opinions matter, our right of assembly is huge... people can force change and stop unfair practices with an organized assembly (if done right)

To me it doesn't really seem like the common person really has a say in what really goes on with the government.

Run for office. Lobby. Vote. Sue.

Regardless of your vote both candidates are very similar and the results are typically the same.

The two parties are not "very similar" and I'm tired of this intellectually lazy claim being repeated over and over again as an excuse for apathy. Who you vote for has an enormous impact and we're fortunate (or unfortunate) enough to be living in a time when an example is right there in front of us. I don't know about you, but I'd rather like habeus corpus back. To say nothing of an end to spying on citizens, pointless invasions of other nations and a grotesque witch hunt "terror watch list" that now includes one in every 300 Americans.

REALLY? So if Al Gore was president in 2000, do you think we'd have the high gas prices, dead and wounded soldiers, and economic crisis that we have now?

It's any Americans OWN FAULT if they feel small and unimportant and they feel like their vote doesn't count. It starts at the smallest levels in the community--I mean, look at Palin. Mayor of a town of 7,000 and now VP pick.

Here's my beef with that though- our "selected" leaders not only have to abide by their own selfish agendas but by everyone who has helped to get them where they are financially. The common voter is completely removed from that allegiance and our "chosen" leader usually focuses on what is good for the needs of the elite. This is the case with every president and anyone who is in power.

The problem again with the whole process is that you have to chose the candidates that have already been chosen for you. The government is treating us like little children by giving us "options"- it makes us feel like we hold some type of power but we really have no say where this country is heading. All politicians got where they are because they are rich not because of their integrity or ethics- this scares me tremendously.

If our votes really counted, wouldn't Gore have been President in 2000?:lol:lol:lol

I wouldn't vote for McCain then as his advisory staff is packed with lobbyists! But what you mention is a problem and it's why I support banning all gifts, services and financial contributions for candidates and elected officials. (I'm also opposed to using private money to prevent the wealthy from maintaining their advantage.)

I'm sorry, but history quite simply doesn't bear this out. Look at FDR for an extreme example but even more recently there was a world of difference between Reagan/Bush and Clinton, especially in terms of constituencies addressed by the administrations. Barack Obama has floated a tax plan for example that specifically addresses the lower classes at the expense of the elite.

The problem again with the whole process is that you have to chose the candidates that have already been chosen for you.

Run yourself. There's really no excuse to sit there complaining. Maybe you too can start as mayor of an insignificant town and a few years later find yourself possibly a heartbeat away from the button.

All politicians got where they are because they are rich not because of their integrity or ethics- this scares me tremendously.

Bill Clinton was born into poverty. Barack Obama grew up middle class and is now worth just $1.3 million. But I agree the wealthy have a grotesquely disproportionate access to political power.

This isn't a stab at you, more curiosity on my part, but do you have a source for your 1 in 300 Americans statistic? I would like to see it, please.

We wouldn't have invaded Iraq, but we'd still have the mortgage crisis, that was on it's way because of deregulation of banking from long ago. However we wouldn't have had the large tax cuts that have added to the deficit.

who cares.
Obama will be elected. He is the text book poster-boy of hope who is the next AntiChrist as described in Revelations in the Bible.
Global warming has accelerated to an unstoppable pace so soon we will not be able to tell seasons apart as described in Revelations.
The Holy Lands will soon be under attack .....

.. its all coming together ....!>.......

the world is ending
THE DEVIL IS COMING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THE DEVIL IS COMING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I voted in Florida in 2004... my vote didn't count. Who was my governor?

And that's the problem--millions of apathetic Americans have no idea who who their governor is or who represents them. You can't just go pull a lever and hope it all works out okay.

BTW, I got that you were eluding to Jeb. Did you vote in that election also? I'd be willing to bet most Americans don't even know there more than 1 election every 4 years--but they know when Lost is on and where the closest McDonald's may be.

So....anyway...what is everyone's favorite dipping sauce for chicken nuggets?

Mine is honey mustard.

Barack Obama has floated a tax plan for example that specifically addresses the lower classes at the expense of the elite.

So as Fred Thompson said last night this 5% that Obama plans to tax (the rich) in favor of the lower class are also the business class

"Now, our opponents tell us not to worry about their tax increases. They tell you they’re not going to tax your family. No, they’re just going to tax businesses. So unless you buy something from a business, like groceries or clothes or gasoline, or unless you get a paycheck from a business, a big business or a small business, don’t worry, it’s not going to affect you."

So the lower class will be paying for this taxation through markups at stores and what not..

I know where you are coming from and I wish I could agree with you. I wish I could say that the common voter actually holds real power and that politicians actually listen to the public and always do what is best for the average American. I wish I could.

Yes, some Americans have become apathetic and that is a result of many things. Some probably got fed up with the system ignoring them and others are just truly ignorant about politics. Either way, many people voted in Florida in 2004- the popular vote was there and ignored. Why? How can we keep faith in a system that pretends to be legit. In the end if the government (the Bigwhigs) thinks something is better for America or for their pocketbook then it will become reality regardless of what little ol me wants- regardless of what the majority of the people in America want.

I know liberals read a lot according to your previous poll...but did you even read this article?

about 400,000 individuals are included on the list, about 95 percent of whom are not U.S. citizens or residents, Kolton said. The watch list also includes separate entries with aliases, fake passports and fake birth dates, bringing the total number of records to more than 1 million, he said.

It's easy to read headlines, "US Terrorism Watch List Tops 1 Million".

This is why I didn't bother posting videos of Wright.

Hahaha I just said the same thing hahaha!:lol

Everything I've read about the state of the economy is truly frightening. This time next year I have little doubt that we'll see more banks failing, home values continuing to fall, gas flirting with five dollars a gallon, a weak dollar and I wouldn't be surprised if the stock market takes a masive dive. Our deficit is out of control. I've read stats that say we're pretty much bankrupt as a nation. I really don't believe either canidate has any real solution for this mess. McCain will continue tax cuts (especially for the rich) and continue to borrow increasing the deficit. Obama will raise taxes. No doubt squeezing the middle class further and wrecking small business all to fund his welfare programs. And I wouldn't be surprised if that money goes to help non Americans. Is there a big difference in the two parties? When it comes to social issues, yes there is. How they are alike though is they make pretty speeches promising a world they can't deliver and no shame in spending (and wasting) tax payer money. But, to be fair, we can't expect one person to change the system. If you want real change you start at the bottom and work up. Everyone says about Washington D.C. that they need to throw the bums out. But, we always keep our bums. We look past the faults of our own party and only see the faults of the other. That's why there's so many career politicians. End of rant.
