Yes, people will recignise him, but as one of my gaming buddies pointed out...
" DUDE, that's FRACKING AWESOME! But... he looks off kinda.. i dono..Like he dose in the comic books, Hellova better job thean this one though..." He picked up a hasblo maul at that pint, I tried REALY hard not to laugh.

Better headsculp? most definitly. Awseome looking maul? without a doubt. But Ray park Was maul. imagine how you would feel if it looked like danny Devito, or George lucas, or hell, even Mark Hammil under the makeup instead.
It's an awesome Maul likness, just not a very good Ray park one. HOWEVER, what keeps throwing it off to me is it looks like he's got horseface. that could just be the angle of the shot though. I'll see if I don't change my opinion when he gets here.

:lol I don't know what the heck that means.

Basicly, it's like a characticure of maul, but not Ray park.
We can all see maul in it., but we just don't see the actor under the makeup in the sculpt. For some of us, that's important. it's more of an interpritation of Darth Maul, than someone dressing up ray park in the suit and makeup, shrinking him down to sixth scale, and then cloneing the hell out of him.

Personaly, I still love it. That, and the appearently inaccurate clothing is my only beef with it.

Thanks Lerath, that's really the point I'm trying to make. Did Medicom sculpt a nice head, yes. Did Medicom paint the head very well, yes. Is it the best Maul sculpt around, yes/no. It's definitely one of the best executed Darth Maul heads in any product line in that it's a well sculpted head that's painted very well and captures the defining traits of the character. What it isn't, is the best representation of Darth Maul as he appeared in The Phantom Menace. Darth Maul's look in The Phantom Menace is defined by the face on which the makeup was applied, a face that Medicom wasn't able to replicate very well. Medicom Darth Maul is more of a comics/EU Darth Maul that exists outside of Ray Park.

It's all a matter of perspective. I think it's a great looking figure and I'll be very glad to have it, but as a Phantom Menace Darth Maul fanatic, I would never say it's the best Maul because the most important part was a swing and a miss. I can certainly see where for some people it's all about the character in a generic sense and feeling this figure is fantastic. I think there's something in this figure for anyone who's a fan of the character.

I'm more of an abstract conceptualizer and I definately think Medicom's painted proto looks way better than SSC's production version, regardless of whether precise anatomical accuracy to Park was achieved. I'll take yours, and the other guys that are more detail oriented in that respect, words for it. It just seems to look much better to me.

That said. Still not sure I want to put $140 down for it.

The one thing I easily recognize is they appear to have picked completely wrong material for the cloak. Which leads me to, I can't believe how many people will notice the slight sculptural in accuracies of a face sculpt or Stormtrooper helmet, but couldn't recognize when SSC totally butchered the Qui-Gon outfit.

I had the same problem with Sideshow's Jabba the Hutt. Great Jabba sculpt but it looked nothing like the midget that operated his head.

LOL Jesus, I need to clean my screen. All sillieness aside, if the jabba face was modeled after the midiget, i'd agree with you, but it's a latex dome. So :p

On the clothes, it's not just the robe, his clothes don't fit correctly.
Please note i said correctly, not right. the clothes fit the figure perfectly, and that is the problem. Maul's clothes were FAR to baggy for him, and this was intentional to make his costume flow. Like samurai pants. Designed to hide his body language and posture. the best pic showing this is in the star wars visual dictionairy. You can really see how it drapes off him.

Having said that, the sideshow costume is nt right either, it suffers from the same problem.

BUT, considereing the size difference between the sideshow maul, and the Medi maul, putting a sideshow costume on the medi maul will make him look great i think... And I just happen to have an extra set of sidesho's darth Maul costume....

He's gonna look SOOOOO sweet!

I just want to say that there's some things you dissect and there's some things you don't.I would disect most of SS's figure's,because of the cheap look and feel they have.I would'nt dissect a figure Like Medi Maul or even most all Medicom's figure's,because there's nothing TO disect. They look great and so does Maul."It's a charcticture of Maul" I would say! nothing of the sort,it looks a lot like him,and damn good likeness at that.Oh and as for Medicom's fabric and clothing, they have the most realistic looking outfits in the 12" arena, right next to HT.None of that puffy stuff that makes SS's figure's look like their wearing a size too big.So take that into consideration before you dissect an awesome figure like Medi Maul.

Don't get me wrong Chavezz, MAuls medi robes look great, but they just don't look baggy enough. I can see too much of the body definitition in the form, and i should not see that much.

For example, his thingies that hang don over his shoulders and go under the belt, should actualy be hanging down over the top of his belt as well, they were that long. they should hang dow about 1/2 way over the belt, and still hand as low to the ground in they do on the figure.

Thats so ridiculously partisan. "Disect SSC because its SSC, but all Medicom toys should just be assumed to be correct."
