I just finished my third replay of MGS 3: Subsistence. In my opinion, it's the best game in the entire franchise.

Anyways, here are some "Raiden" references from MGS 3 that I found funny:

Boss: What is this fairy disguise? It'll rub off on you, and then you'll lose sight of who you truly are.. (referring to Snake's Raiden/Raikov mask).

And then there was that whole conversation between Major Zero and Snake. Snake (disguised as Raikov) mentioned that he'd be popular with the Raikov look, and then Major Zero told him, not to count on it.

It's amusing that Kojima didn't mind poking fun at Raiden, even though Raiden is his favorite character.

It's same as MGS3 but with extras so 3 in general is your fav?

I'm replaying MGS2 for like the 7th time, But it's a real treat because I haven't played it in years. I just finished MGS last month, and after I beat 2 I'll replay 3.

same here. the first time i played it i just felt that it was ok, but the second play through is when i really appreciated how great it really is.

I'm pretty sure after playing previous ones and playing MGS4 that 3 carries even more weight with it. I loved the change of scenery from mostly cold interiors, we got lush forest. And it was great to play as the Legendary Big Boss.

I didn't like MGS3: Snake Eater. I didn't finish MGS3 until Subsistence came out. Worth it for Metal Gear: Solid Snake.

Well, I didn't like the fixed overhead camera angle of the original MGS 3. That camera view was very restrictive, and detrimental to stealth-feel of Snake Eater. But, all of that was fixed with the release of Subsistence, when the free-floating camera perspective was introduced. It's amazing how just a simple change in the camera view, greatly improved the asthetics of MGS 3 - it's like you're playing a totally different game.

In my opinion, you haven't experienced MGS 3 to its fullest, until you play Subsistence.

Do you mind if I ask why? I didn't like the original MGS 3 either, because of the restrictive camera angle. But, the storyline and everything else about the original MGS 3 was top-notch - the best in what the series had to offer (until the release of Subsistence, of course).

You answered your own question. By the time MGS3 had been released, I had tired of the camera system implemented in the game, something that has been practically unchanged since the original Metal Gear Solid (which practically used the same perspective from the old 8-bit Metal Gear games for the majority of gameplay). By the time MGS3 released, the action genre and stealth genre had moved forward and the MGS franchise did not.

I didn't really like the camo system either. Something about visiting the menu screen to manually change the camo every time did not sit well with me. The rebuttal argument to this complaint would run along the lines of: "You don't have to change your camo to play the game". I know that, but it doesn't make me dislike it any less.

Other than those deficiencies, I appreciated MGS3 for its story (or at least, the majority of it until Subsistence came out).

Completely agreed. I didn't like the camo system either. The first time I played MGS 3, I kept thinking, "how the hell is it possible for Snake to carry 15 different camos in his small backpack". And how does he change is camos in a split second? :lol

I guess, in order to preserve the "fun factor", and over-the-top humor of the experience, Hideo Kojima didn't want too much realism in the Metal Gear games (most of all, MGS 3). Hence, the weird camo system, Snake being able to carry dozens of supplies in his backpack, etc. At least, that's my take on it.

just picked up a used copy of Portable Ops for PSP...now i just need to get my hands on an actual PSP. i'm gonna borrow my friends for a while, but is there a specific model that is better than others???(the last one i had was the 1001 model first released)

I never had a problem with the camera angle, it's how all the camera angles in the previous installments were. I love the game without this "fixed" camera angle.

Well, if you're looking for a "better" version, that will depend on how you plan to use your PSP. If you're interested in having a large screen hand-held, stick with the 1001 model. However, if you want to connect your PSP to a television and play games on your TV, then you should invest in the PSP slim (also known as the PSP 3000).

Just like your friend, I also own the original PSP, and I'm pretty happy with it. But, if my PSP allowed me to play Portable Ops on my television, that would have been even more sweet.

^^^thanks!!! yeah i'd like to hook it up to the big screen if possible. i bought the first PSP on day one, but sold it after a couple of months due to not having any games that really kept me interested.

Um, the PSP Slim and PSP 3000 have the same sized screen as the original PSP. The PSP "Slim" is the name used for the PSP 2000, not the PSP 3000.

My suggestion: The PSP Slim (2000) is the best one you can get. It's lighter and slimmer than the original (while maintaining an equal screen size - 4.3 inches) and features TV output. The PSP Slim also has double the onboard RAM, which allows faster loading in games. I would avoid the PSP 3000, its screen is inferior to the Slim.

You can find the specs here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_Portable

does best buy / wal mart still carry the Slim systems??? or will i need to go to gamestop to buy a refurbished one?? i'll stop on my way home tomorrow at best buy to see what i can find.

I'm not sure. I haven't kept track of whether or not Walmart or BB still carry PSP Slims. I'd suggest giving your local Walmart/Best Buy stores a call.

Oh yeah, thanks for the correction, Plasmid. There are just too many new model numbers, that it's hard to keep track of them all.

Wookie, if you can't find a PSP slim, definitely call your local Gamestop, and inquire if they have any refurbished systems. If you buy from them, they'll even provide you with a limited warranty. Although, I believe that their warranty only covers up to 3 months...

By the way, Portable Ops was THE reason for why I bought my PSP. If you loved MGS 3, PO is definitely a game that you'll enjoy!

"Metal Gear Rising Getting Brand New Engine"

"Upcoming multi-platform title Metal Gear Solid: Rising isn't MGS4 with a fresh coat of paint. Oh, no.

According to the Kojima Productions podcast, Konami is developing a brand new engine for Rising to, as KP podcast host Sean Eyestone points out, "realize this multi-platform goal".

"We're redoing the engine from scratch, and it's going to look amazing," says Eyestone. "It's going to be a big project like Metal Gear Solid 4. The entire team is serious about making it look as good as possible on every platform."

The title Rising is a pun of sorts. The Japanese pronunciation "Raijin" is a word play on a mythic Japanese storm god. The character name "Raiden" means "thunder and lightning" in Japanese. Geddit?

The title also has significance in English: "It's raising the Metal Gear franchise up to the next step.""

bummer, i just read in gamesradar what plasmid303 posted. well, i hope its an improvement..........screw that, you want improvement? give us a big boss mgs!

You want more MGS, I wanted Kojima and crew to move on to different projects more deserving of attention. One of us got what they wanted, but both of us are still complaining. Something is odd about that.

The Kotaku author is wrong, when he said that "Rising" is a pun for the Japanese God "Raijin" - he's spreading a false rumor. The Japanese God of Wind, "Fujin" was the first to appear in the trailer, and "Raijin" was second. Furthermore, both of the Gods hold equal significance in Shinto mythology (and an equal significance in "Rising" I believe).
