MGS 4 practically negated all of the sacrifices that Snake made throughout his life, and unbeknownst to himself, he was nothing more than a pawn and the instrument of destruction for a corrupt world order.

This is true but I dont think it takes anything away from Snake. The Patriots were a Frankestein that Big Boss created out of grief and being a cry baby that he couldn't stop and neither could his sons, it cost them all their lives Solid Snake is the closest to a survivor out of all of them.

Basically everything he fought for up until MGS4 became meaningless. He had such a bright outlook on the future and fighting for the freedoms of the people that were under the Patriots control... to becoming this geriatric old soldier that only wanted to die. MGS1 to MGS2 it's the same guy basically except in MGS1 he was only worried about himself. I don't know who that was in MGS4.

I am sure Philanthropy alone would make it hard to have those dogs especially when he only had them because he was retired to begin with.
