Anyone else feel like Naked Snake/Big Boss VS Solid Snake is similar to a Anakin/Vader Vs Luke comparison. I feel like Solid Snake is everything that Big Boss should have been. Despite all of the terrible things Solid Snake has been through he has never comprised on his ideals even though he has been used as a puppet and manipulated, betrayed, lied to, tortured, been made to believe he was inferior, had his youth stolen, had no ability to father a child and try to shape them into a good human being, turned into a biological weapon, and been left alone at the end of his life. He still fights for humanity and a better world. In my opinion Big Boss was weak in that his son endured far worse and never gave in or gave up on his ideals and lived by his own will.

Thoughts?

Yup, the Star Wars comparisons have been brought up here before, even the way Kojima turned Big Boss into the main character of the entire series is similar to Star Wars.

The trailer wasn't as bad as people are making it out to be...

Unless we're literally meant to think "Big Boss = Skull Face", it could very well just be symbolic of how far gone Big Boss will be and how similar to Skull Face he will become in terms of the means he uses to achieve his goals.

Also, though the design is still pretty ridiculous, the stiff movement of the new Metal Gear actually looks pretty convincing.

I thought the new trailer montage was more to hype up the new Metal Gear, so I don't see any reason why it would really need to cover extensive material in the timeline aside from the other Metal Gear's.

It's bad, and you should feel bad! I'm just kidding, but that last part did seem like something out of Futurama (It's a cartoon created by Matt Groening of the Simpsons set in the year 3000 if you haven't seen that show.)

I am pretty positive Big Boss is not Skullface on the simple fact that no way in heck would a site like Gamespot give a game a "10" if you were playing the character who did those horrible things in Ground Zeroes. Big Boss will probably kill Skullface, but he probably agree with some of Skullface's idealogies. Something terrible is going to happen, and Boss is going to see he was right, and then we might get the seen where he kills his men. That's what I thought when we got that E3 trailer. Whether he develops a dissociate identity disorder or not, I'm not sure. I don't think so though.

As to the beginning of the trailer, I just thought the scenes he took for the montage were very odd. I get that he was showing the openings, significant moments, a metal gear, and an end to each of the games, but the actual shots were strange, and the way they were paced confused me with what he was trying to get at. Then we got that really dark and atmospheric hallway scene of Boss transitioning to Skullface juxtaposed with that ridiculous Metal Gear. I'm not upset over it (It's just a video game), but I just didn't like that as of right now.

Right? This place is memetastic.

I agree.

@higgins Just like pturtle said, that's a pretty popular opinion! Although, I don't think anyone would compare MGS3 and the Star Wars prequels in terms of quality (I mean no offense if you like them).

To me, you can only tell if a person is good if he or she confronts evil, and comes out better from it. Solid Snake went through hell, and came out a better person. Big Boss, on the otherhand, cracked. To me, it's way harder for a person to stay in grace, rather than fall from it, so I agree with you that Solid Snake's person is much stronger.

However, these are not real people; they are characters, so while Luke and Solid Snake would be much more interesting as human beings if they were real (because it's very hard to be good. Believe me, I pray all day long because of it! :lol), I find Darth Vader and Big Boss to be more interesting characters than their series counterparts. I do think Solid Snake is a great character though, and I actually wrote about how playing him in MGS4 helped me during a difficult time. However, I thought a lot of his dialogue was riddled with cliches in the first game (it's an unpopular opinion, so you're welcome to disagree! :)). While I liked him, it made it difficult for me to connect with him outside of just being a video game character.

Although, I feel like Solid Snake and Big Boss went through way more than Darth Vader and Luke! I don't want to take into account how Anakin became Darth Vader in the prequels because they made both him and his wife total whiny psychopaths, rather than compelling victims, which George Lucas said he wrote.

Just read a couple of "MAJOR" spoilers today, and everyone who loved MGS2 and MGS4 are not going to be disappointed..Don't worry too much about these spoilers because everybody will know at the very begiining of the game. (But in any case be careful untill Sept 1st)

And about Big Boss as Skull Face in the last trailer..It's just simbolic. Obviously.

Re: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain & Ground Zeroes

Do you guys remember the 20th Anniversary trailer from 2008? It had a MUCH better video montage than this one, about the history of MGS (the timeline of the canon was also rolling at the side). It also didn't have any spoilers, and it featured the instrumental version of Calling to the Night. Also, I love the slight subtlety in how the music became more "up-to-date" after each game was progressively being shown on screen.

That 20th Anniversary credits still give me chills. The first theme was composed by Konami's Iku Mizutani, the second version by Norihiko Hibino. Calling to the Night was joint composed by Akihiro Honda and Hibino. Honda seems to be credited in the latest MGSV trailer, but how far the extension of his work goes remains to be seen.

Fact of the matter is, every song and music track in this game so far doesn't scream "Metal Gear", and the power ballads songs in MGSV sounds sappy. People are loosing their ability to appreciate good music, and the game is pandering to that by substituting with cheesy music and and and 80's pop songs.

I haven't read any spoilers but I figured that it was just Big Boss metaphorically turning into a phantom, and foreshadowing what he literally looks like after his fight with Solid :lol

Such a legendary hero, defeated by aerosol spray and a lighter... :rotfl
