So they're going to "Dallas" their way out of the continuity problems, if the film really hits the mark then I'll except that I suppose. But if the film is a pile of crap then it'll just add another nail in its coffin, but I hope its good as we've not had a decent film from that franchise for far too long.

Michael Biehn Contacted About Alien 5 - AvPGalaxy

Alien 5 Will Not Discard The Last Two Movies, Get The Details - CINEMABLEND

^wtf to this

There is no non-stupid way that this new film can keep Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection in the same continuity.

Hicks clone - stupid idea. ''He's just a grunt'' - why would he be cloned? Why would the clone have acid burns?
''Inbetween-quel'' - stupid idea. It would require CGI de-ageing for the entire film and would look terrible most likely. And it would somehow have to set up the exact circumstances that lead into Alien 3.

Personally I hope what Blomkamp was saying is that we're free to keep them as our Alien canon if we wish and disregard his one. Or accept both as diverging canons. Watch one sequence or the other depending on our mood.

There's no proof that Blomkamp even said what's in that second article. There are three other articles, one that just came out today, that say the complete opposite. The first one from a few days ago even has video. You're right though, all that crap makes no sense and it would never work.

Funny that he says Alien 3 "went off the rails". Resurrection? Sure, Alien 3? Not at all. But he's obviously only saying that because Hicks was killed off and there were no guns in 3. :lol It was closer to the original than Aliens was, easily. It moved away from the Hollywood blockbuster type of film that appeals to the masses and brought back that subtle seriousness that fans loved about Alien.

No happy ending family crap. No hero or love interest (Clemens - Charles Dance, who is also a far greater actor than Michael Biehn :monkey1) surviving. Very dark and unforgiving, like the alien itself.

Alien 3 also gave us a fantastic score, possibly the best of the franchise under Prometheus - something Aliens severely lacked. It's sad that AvP and AvP:R's soundtracks are more memorable than Alien's.

I've always wanted to see what it would be like if Hicks and Newt survived, and I'm still excited, but I hope they don't try to retcon Alien 3 as it will likely be the better film and remain the proper ending to the main storyline.

Agreed, no way did Alien 3 go off the rails. Wish he hadn't said that.

Not sure how happy an ending Aliens was. The rest of the film was a massacre! And just when you think they're home free poor Bishop gets brutally torn asunder. But again, agreed about Alien 3.

Again, agreed on the score for Alien 3 - fantastic. But my word do you underrate the Aliens score. A score which was being used in trailers for other movies for years. Worse than the scores for the AvP movies? :lol Nonsense good sir.

Who knows but certainly possible that Alien 3 will come out the better film.

I can see how a case could be made for Alien 3 going off the rails with regard to its tone. ALIENS matches up much better with ALIEN than A3 did. "Happy family ending?" Well I guess A1 had a happy family ending too then since Ripley survived and with her little kitty. In Alien 3 pets die, kids die, everyone dies. That isn't reminiscent of the first film at all. It's just a depressing 90's movie, not a return to ALIEN's roots. Is Alien 3 good? Absolutely. Better than ALIENS? No way.

I think it's closer to Superman Returns and how it's a direct sequel to S2 and ignores SIII and SIV:TQFP. I'm one of the few defenders of Superman Returns and I have no problems with Blomkamp's strategy.

You can still watch Superman 3 and 4 if you like those films, but Superman Returns works (for me) as a fitting conclusion to the Christopher Reeve films.

To me, Alien and Aliens are night and day, despite their being part of the same larger story. One is a horror movie, the other is an action movie. The kinds of environments, set and character designs, cinematography, score, pacing, etc. are all fundamentally different because of that.

Nah, night and day would be if ALIEN was horror and ALIENS was some screwball comedy like "Animal House" or something. Suspense/Horror vs. Action/Horror, they're still kindred spirits moreso than whatever depressing thing Alien 3 was trying to be.

Y'know, that's interesting. . .

Anytime you introduce a massive plot hole in your opening credit scene, I would say your film has gone off the rails.

Throwing an egg/facehugger aboard the Sulaco and having them **** up the pods in 3 is just as convenient and contrived as Ripley suddenly having a daughter so you can have her "mommy" and "human mother vs. alien queen momma" story for Aliens.

It wasn't a "massive plot hole", and had zero bearing on the overall quality of the film, which was excellent.

All movies have convenient stuff like that, even Alien.

I'd say Aliens went "off the rails" when they turned what was once such a horrifying and mysterious creature into a generic space-ant.

Which Alien 3 continued. Albeit with just one alien. But they kept the idea of a Queen and the Alien sensing it in Ripley and leaving her alive. One can reasonably assume that it's role in a hive context would be exactly the same as the warriors in Aliens.
