It's hard to get behind a movie that was abandoned by its director even after Fox told him he could make the movie he always wanted.

If the director doesn't believe in it why should I.

So if the movie is a masterpiece then Fincher is wrong about it?

There's a ton of reasons why Fincher hates the whole experience. And basically it's not up to the artist to decide if his/her art is great or not. Never been. So trust yourself and how you feel - what the author think about his piece shouldn't be relevant. Opinions on art will always be subjective.

Sometimes directors are wrong. Lucas thinks the theatrical cut of SW is garbage. Cameron thinks the Queen would have looked much better as a cartoon...

I'm not saying that Alien 3 is a masterpiece but it's certainly a more admirable effort than Fincher himself will give it credit for.

Plenty of filmmakers, writers, directors and actors hate their own work that are loved by others.

I like Alien, Aliens and Alien 3 for all different reasons. Alien 3 has the best production/development story. Everything that was happening behind the scenes was fascinating.

Aliens > Alien.

Not even close.

Aliens is a goddamn masterpiece.

This.... This I can't get behind and I must call you out on your ignorance :lol ;)

Seriously though I love ALIENS but ALIEN is the masterpiece. Aliens is great but it's a few steps behind masterpiece level. Perhaps it's because I prefer Horror to sci fi action. I don't know. I actually find ALIENS to be the one that can be a bit boring now that I have seen it so many times.. ALIEN on the other hand always feels fresh to me.

ALIEN is like looking at a painting. It's pure art. It's Giger's work brought to life. So many scenes are amazing to look at. When I was a kid I found it a bit boring. But that was the days of Pan and Scan VHS. After I got to see it in Widescreen it just became a whole new experience. No matter how many times I watch it I always find something new to appreciate.

But I can get why many love ALIENS better. At one time I was in that camp. But that was when I was a boy but now I am a MAN... It's time to be a man Jye :lol

Both are 5 star classic movies though... It's just when I think masterpiece I think ALIEN not ALIENS so much.

Jye... You really should give ALIEN 3 another shot... It's "The Witch" of the Alien series :lol

This comes close to how my favorite movie went from Aliens when I was a young kid to Alien now when I'm ooooold. Good post.

He really shouldn't. It's just not his type of movie, regardless of the quality which is fantastic (assembly cut).

Same. Alien was boring before I grew up and realized just how ****ing extraordinary it was. It's the only film I rate 10/10.

Oh I did, opening night.

It was beyond horrible.

But I guess its now considered a masterpiece. :lol

ALIEN 3 is far from a masterpiece. But it is a beautiful film to look at. Like I said I hated it also upon first seeing it. Hated what they did to all the characters from ALIENS... Killing Ripley was the awful icing on the cake. But with repeat viewing I started to enjoy it more and accept it's ideas. I think you should watch it again jye.. But don't watch the Extended cut. If you find that you like the theatrical version better then you can give the other version a try. But I don't think the Extended version adds enough to make someone who might hate the film.... Like it.

Well it SHOULD be considered a masterpiece. Some of us actually always thought so. But I also feel sure that people who prefer Alien over Aliens are more likely to think of Alien 3 as a (flawed) masterpiece and as the perfect ending to the trilogy.

It's weird. I really can watch ALIENS and accept it as the ending. However I have no issue with ALIEN 3 being it's own film. I almost don't consider it part of the series. Only in the fact that I prefer to think that the characters from ALIENS live happily ever after :) But I like ALIEN 3 enough to not dismiss it. I guess it's like this... I have no problem watching ALIEN and ALIENS back to back... I don't feel the need to watch 3 I find it easy to end there. But unlike most trilogies I can pop three in at any time and not feel the need to watch the other two first. It stand alone that way. Does any of that make sense :lol

Spielberg still has some bad feeling about JAWS.. Granted its not Fincher kind of hate... But Spielberg has been less then nice at times when talking about the film.. The experience on that one tainted his feelings about the film... I can understand that. And lets face it, If a director can't fully love the greatest film ever made and he is the one who made it why should we be surprised if Fincher can't stand a much lesser film (yet still good) ALIEN 3 :)

Yep.

True, I think we should accept that Alien 3 will never be for everybody.

Yeah but ALIEN 3 was how man years ago and tastes change so much... I think there is a shot... Jye when you are thinking about seeing Captain America: Civil War for the ninth time in the theater... Just stay home that day and watch ALIEN 3 :lol

Alien.... It's the only film I rate 10/10.

You freaking need to watch JAWS again ;) :lol

Yes it absolutely makes sense and that's why Alien 5 is for you :) ...though I would very very much love to see it too!
PS I have an urge to watch Jaws now...

Yeah I can get behind 5 with no problem and not feel insulted that it ignores 3.

And I really mean that as no insult to part 3. There are moments in three that rival anything in the whole series. It's just a better stand alone movie then part of the ALIEN series. For me anyways.

I do. Saw it once, wasn't impressed, but one viewing isn't always enough to fairly judge a movie. I didn't think it was bad or anything though.

I can totally see why you see it that way.
I don't mind 5 myself mainly because I love Blimkamp for D9 and well, we already had Resurrection doing what I will insist on calling a 'what if' scenario.
