Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 from Big Chief Studios!

When I was a kid, things like sharing, respecting one another's differences, finding a way to avoid violence, etc. weren't considered partisan. People who suddenly now think they are are very dangerous.

In that sense, Dr. Who is political. Thank God!

Is that REALLY the prevailing social message you get from the current Who? Seriously?

Do you really consider Russel T Davies to be impartial without agenda? :cuckoo:

For the most part, yeah. Are you talking about the gay thing? Well, sure, there's a bit of that, but it's hardly the point of the show.

What I see is a polite and smart Englishman who travels the universe using brains instead of brawn, expecting the best of everyone, and respecting everyone's differences. It's essentially what they taught us on Sesame Street.

What do you see?

I dont see that anymore.
Lets go back to RTD S1. There was a gay ref in every episode. Every one. I didnt like that at all. JNT was as gay as, but never allowed that to openly intrude into the show. Since then, that feature has prevailed and reared its head in many of the shows. Cant say I'm happy with that at all.
The Smart, non violent, thinks first, solves all problems logically type of eccentric dude... that has all but gone as well.
Actually, the whole show has taken such a downward spiral for me that I bearly recognized the last series as Doctor Who.
Those episodes swayed me away from all my peorders with FP for the CO figure releases.
The only thing keeping me hooked on thse (the BC stuff) is that they are quality 1:6 figures.
Moff man has destroyed Who, in my opinion.

There's a LOT wrong with Moff's Who, and we've recently had some of the weakest Who episodes in decades. But I don't think that changes the politics specifically in the show.

Was there a gay reference in every episode of S1? That does seem a bit much. But, I don't know where you guys live. I've lived in the country and I've lived in a few cities. In LA, Boston, and NY if you work in an office you're going to run into people of every race and sexuality you can imagine on a daily basis. It's just modern life. It doesn't seem so strange to me. Now, if Dr. Who were suddenly about being gay, that would be one thing, but I don't think that line has been crossed.

I think it's just reflective of modern urban life.

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 from Big Chief Studios!

MAY-be. The BBC is a government company.

No, it strictly speaking isn't, but successive Tory governments have made no secret that they would like it to be sold off int the private sector (as indeed they would like to sell everything of value that isn't already). It will be another tragedy if they ever get away with it.

As for the gay agenda, it does seem a little heavy handed and forced at times, but it doesn't bother me inthe slightest.

You see that this is a contradiction, I would hope?

I see what you mean, but the BBC is a publicly funded service by compulsory license fee (if you own a television), operated outside of government control of content.

Really the same as PBS.

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 from Big Chief Studios!

I know very little about how PBS works in the US, do they allow advertising on PBS, and do PBS channels produce drama, movies etc?

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 from Big Chief Studios!

What do you see?

For the most part I see an action-adventure/swashbuckling series where the Doctor is somewhat altruistic, but only vaguely.

As far as non-violent solutions I'm not really sure I get that from the new show at all. The Doctor may not use violence himself, but rarely if ever makes verbal commentary in his lines about the importance of that to him.

I haven't found the show to be very philosophical in a while.

I definately think the general tone of "acceptance" has been really heavy handed and almost forcefed. I find sublty to be a much stronger way to influence people's opinions.

I'm just not sure the government should have a hand in trying to push agendas in either direction using tax payer money, particularly when that clearly supports one political party, which here in the US happens to be the party that would increase those taxes. :lol

I think the strongest positive and noncontroversial social statement Doctor Who makes is the value of friendship/companionship/and interdependance which I think is especially important to emphasize as we grow more and more distant/impersonal with technology.

Fascinating conversation. :lol

(come on BC let's get some news)

No kidding! And thought Doctor Who was meant to be enjoyed for it's entertainment value.

IMO it is...that's why I don't see the need for the government to run such programming...or any programming.

No advertising and they produce dramas, movies, etc.

It's not as big or well-funded as the BBC, but if you've ever heard of Sesame Street or Masterpiece Theatre, that's PBS.

I'm really not seeing much political in the show. It's all the values which we considered universal a couple decades ago. The people who suddenly see this as controversial are a new movement and I don't think we should change our stories just for them.

just addressing this one little line.

The writer was homosexual, correct?

so, it stands to reason that he's going to put a bit of himself into his work.

Getting mad about that, in any way, is the same as getting mad that every single episode of star trek The next generation had some sort of heterosexual reference in Every episode. in every one.

I only went with star trek, becuase it's easy to see those references.

let's edit your post for the opposite viewpoint, and see how silly it sounds.

I dont see that anymore.
Lets go back to RTD S1. There was a straight ref in every episode. Every one. .

see how odd that is?

my point is

people are people, and who they are, effects what they do. it's best just to accept people's uniqueness, so long as it doesn't affect you directly.

Honestly, I don't really know what you're talking about. You might be making up strawmen here.

No one I know is saying that the values you previously mentioned, such as sharing, are controversial.
