Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 from Big Chief Studios!

Nooooooooooooooo! Everyone pretend they didn't just see a post about signatures!

Dah-di-dah... wonder when the expansion packs will go up for pre-order?

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 from Big Chief Studios!

Probably after the 10 and then the 4 th are announced.
So much for an October announcement.
Looked back at my Amy announcement ... March !!
So if lucky, 10 by January (announcement only) then march for 4, then expansion packs, maybe June... Then in a year we might hear that Amy is almost ready to be shipped.

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 from Big Chief Studios!

Dare I be honest in this thread about the DW figure I received?

I left the figure-collecting business during college and just got back into it about a month ago starting with this figure and some Hot Toys preorders. My DW arrived a few weeks back (maybe a full month now, can't remember), and I re-registered here to post some thoughts, but it sure seems like some people don't take too kindly to criticism of Big Chief.

I'd like to hear your thoughts. All we have in here are people saying it's HT quality, and unless people's photos are really bad. . . it's not HT quality. So, it'd be nice to hear from people who are a bit more impartial.

I definitely don't think it's HT quality. I think the clothing is but not the head/paint. That may be because it lacks texture and in recent years HT paint apps have just gotten on another level. As have Enterbay.

It's better than Medicom and better than Sideshow (by a mile) but it doesn't quite reach HT or Enterbay status. Just my two cents.

Eh. I wouldn't say it's 100% Hot Toys quality, although BC is much closer than I thought they would be, since they're pretty much a baby in the industry. I think he looks better than most Medicom figures, although I don't really collect those - I've only seen pictures. I will say that a lot of the photos of the figure I've been seeing online aren't very flattering. Cheap cameras, maybe. Bad angles. A lot of people need to pull his shirt down a bit so he doesn't look so neckless, or just pop his head off entirely and have the collar hold it in place. My figure looks nicer in person than many of the images I've seen from others who own him. All in all I'm pleased with the sculpt and clothing, although the face could have been painted with more detail. Nothing to get your knickers in a twist over, though. He's a good looking figure.

That being said, he's got a darn decent amount of red staining on his chin. It didn't look like the bow tie was pressing against his face when I opened him - I guess I don't recall really. I wasn't expecting a giant blob of red dye to be on his face, so I wasn't paying attention to it. I figured if the bow tie (or any other clothing article near the head - I don't mind body-part staining under clothing) tended to bleed, BC would have known and left it off the figure, wrapped his entire head to prevent it from contacting his skin, or used a different dye for the bow. I've tried gentle soap and water, non-acetone nail polish remover, and a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, all with no success. I'm...upset.

I ordered directly from Big Chief, if anyone is curious. Have US stores even started stocking him yet?

Use pimple cream, just let it sit and wipe it away. If if doesn't work at first, just let it sit longer.

Thanks for your impressions. It's pretty much exactly what I see. Folks labeling it HT quality just rubs me the wrong way, but overall it looks like a good fig, lots of accessories in the box. And nowadays for $200 it's a decent value. As crazy as that may seem.

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 from Big Chief Studios!

Ah, crap. That was my next move, but I forgot to pick some up while grocery shopping today. I don't think I have any myself. If I do it probably expired about 7 years ago. I'm not getting my hopes up too high. Red dye is one of the most vicious in my experience. I'll be requesting a new head if nothing works (bit nervous about how that's going to go). Correct me if I'm wrong, but after the benzoyl peroxide there's nothing else to try, yes?

I recommend people be very careful with the bow tie. It's a bleeder. Again, pull his shirt down to expose more of his neck or pop his head off. It'll help keep the bow from touching his face, and Matt Smith's a lanky guy anyway. His neck is supposed to be a little longer than what it is on the figure, in my opinion.

If only the stain was on his torso or something. Then I wouldn't give a damn. Out of sight, out of mind.

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 from Big Chief Studios!

I never said it was Hot Toys quality.

Overall it is very good, especially for a first release from a brand new company, and the head sculpt itself really is great, but there are certainly some issues. The plasticy looking hands, the sloppy paint on some accessories, the rubbery shoes, durability concerns on certain bits of the clothing, the too short neck, all of those are valid criticisms to my mind. Some, though not me thankfully, have also had issue with the red tie staining the head sculpt.

So yeah, it's hardly perfect, or even 'Hot Toys quality' (which usually isn't perfect either, but by now has ironed out most of these kind of issues on most releases). That said, most of those issues are more niggles and minor irritants than outright game killers, at least to my mind. And just how much of an impact any of those issues, if one has them, impacts their enjoyment of the piece varies from person to person anyway.

As a first release, overall, I do still find it to be quite impressive, and it shows a lot of potential for the future of the line. I mean as I said, I don't think this is quite 'Hot Toys quality', but it is still, at the end of the day, very good, and for a first release even more so, especially when you look back at similar early releases even by 1:6 industry leaders like Hot Toys and Enterbay. Big Chief have jumped right into the game as a serious player at the higher end of the market, quality wise. And while they do have some issues to iron out, they are already releasing product that is better than a great many other players in the 1:6 game, and is closing in on the market leaders in terms of overall quality. They aren't there yet in my mind, but they have shown their potential with this release and are certainly players in the game worth keeping a serious eye on.

And when you have a fanbase that has been starved of such high end quality releases for so long, people tend to be a bit more forgiving as they are grateful to finally have quality product to collect...at least at first anyway. And for me, personally, even with the various niggles, I was overall happy with the product that I got, and as such look forward to purchasing more Big Chief Who figures in the future.

I actually think Big Chief 'going dark' over the past month or so is far more concerning, in that collectors and customers will forgive or overlook a lot in collecting a line, but one thing they won't quickly forgive or get over is the feeling of being left in the dark without any information, or being unable to raise a response to issues they may have. That kind of thing will alienate a customer/collector base faster than just about anything else, as if people don't have any reliable information they tend draw their own conclusions for the lack of communication, which almost always tend to lean towards worst case scenario.

No company, no matter how busy, should ever allow that to happen. Even a perfunctory short update along the lines of "We apologise for the delays and thank you all for your patience, just really snowed under right now trying to get everything sorted, but all issues will be addressed, we promise. Will update again soon." would take all of a minute or two, and would at least put minds at ease a bit. There will still be people who are impatient, even some that would be justifiably so, however at least the customer/collector base wouldn't be left completely in the dark and feeling ignored and free to make up their own doomsday scenarios of what is going on.

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 from Big Chief Studios!

Yes. Considering that this is Big Chief's very first figure, I'm quite impressed. It's a huge accomplishment, and bravo to them. However, their interaction with the customers - or current lack thereof - could eventually cripple them. This is an important, if not critical, period for them, and they're struggling. Failing? Way too early to make that call. But struggling? Yes.

I think it's safe to say I'm unpleasantly surprised by what's occurring right now. Is this what's going to happen every single time they're working on releasing a figure? Everyone understands that they're busy trying to get Amy out, but I'm assuming they're almost always going to have a figure in the works (if they want to do all the Doctors and some companions). So when are they going to find time to take care of the people buying their merchandise?

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 from Big Chief Studios!

While I hear you, Hot Toys are absolutely terrible with communication, delays, and customer service, and they are doing more than fine. In the end, a quality product will trump everything else.

Having said that, good customer service will get you diehard loyalists.

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 from Big Chief Studios!

Yes. I haven't found anything else that gets dye out.

Black and red are the two worst offenders.

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 from Big Chief Studios!

I've never had any trouble with HT, although it's been years since I had any dealings with them. That will change in a few months, so we'll see I suppose.

Delays don't bother me. That's a given. You're right about a quality product trumping everything else - usually. Personally I feel a bit torn since my Doctor isn't the quality I expected. Not with that face that looks like it was smeared with some of River Song's lipstick.

Whether I buy from BC again - and my ultimate opinion of them - will depend on what happens with his head.

This is one of the handful of reasons why I don't like people saying "HT Quality". Thinking that every company should aspire to be like Hot Toys is silly.

It's like saying every car should be "Rolls Royce quality". I'm just fine with my Honda, thank you very much.

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 from Big Chief Studios!

Does anyone think people might be better off NOT ordering directly from BC in the future? I wonder if it would be possible to get better service when ordering from someone like CCG Armory.

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 from Big Chief Studios!

For those of you trying to get rid of the red dye by benezoyl peroxide and having no luck- how are you using it? If you just put it on, let it set, and wipe off, you won't get anywhere. Red and black dyes take longer to get out. The problem of dyes staining plastic is common in the realm of soft body obitsu and similiar figures. Also you want to use a product with 10% benzoyl peroxide no other additives if you can find it (Oxy-10 is highly recommended in the doll world).

Prep the area by washing it in soap and water to remove oil and dirt.

Put a little bit of the blemish remover over the stain, getting as little onto unstained areas as possible. Then lay the figure (or just the head) out in direct sunlight or a light that similuates the sun (those used for plants or reptile habitats). After about 24 hours, remove the creme to see how the stain looks. Repeat if the staining is still severe.

Once the stain is almost gone, take the blemish remover off but leave the figure or head in the light for another couple of days. The remover will keep on bleaching the area after it has been removed, even if you take it out of the light. If after a few days the stain is still lingering, you can treat it again.

Once the stain is gone, I'd personally neutralize the area bleached by using a baking soda/water mixture. The best defense again stains reoccuring is to use a varnish spray like Mr. Super Clear (yes, I realize that you shouldn't have to on a figure like this, buuuuttt...)

Do NOT use acetone- it can eat away at the plastic over time. If you've used it, neutralize it with the baking soda mixture.

Hope this helps. If you need more info I'll be happy to help if I can. You can also google Obitsu soft body stain removal. Forums like Junky Spot and Parabox have a number of helpful threads on the subject.

Bunch of great information there, thanks for sharing.

Re: New Doctor Who 1:6 and 1:4 from Big Chief Studios!

We are very much alive, that much I can confirm! However, right now we do not have anything to share with you guys. We understand that you are all eager to receive exciting news and believe me when I say that we desperately want to update you all. We do our best to keep you posted, but we are a new company and so very short staffed. One day we will have an army of people, but right now we have to juggle everything ourselves. Sadly this means that there are times when our ability to interact with fans as much as we would like is limited. We have been very busy with more mundane business matters.

It is also very difficult to keep on top of customer service issues, both here, on other forums and on our Facebook page. If you do have problems, or issues that you would like resolving, we would kindly request that you forward details of your problem(s), plus photograph(s) to [email protected].

Thanks
The BIG Chief Team
