Super Freak
I think Alex Smith unfairly gets the game manager label. Remember he led the Chiefs to a 28 point lead on the road at Indianapolis in the 2014 playoffs, only to lose when Andrew Luck rallied the Colts. Smith threw for 378 yards and four TDs in a losing effort.
The Chiefs have always been a dark horse candidate. I said that last year as well. Remember, they went to NE with an 11 game winning streak in the divisional round last year and played New England tough. They only lost by a TD. They had outgained the Pats, had more first downs, and had a 15 minute advantage in time of possession...but lost the turnover battle, 1-0, when Knile Davis fumbled in Patriot territory at the NE 31.
The Chiefs aren't sexy. The Patriots are the Patriots. The Broncos are the reigning Super Bowl champion. The Raiders light it up offensively, and their "return to greatness" narrative is pretty enthralling. It's easy to overlook the Chiefs. Tyreek Hill may be the difference maker. In recent years, they haven't had a big time game breaker at receiver to stretch the field. They have a game breaker in Jamaal Charles, but he's been hobbled by injuries and opposing defenses can key on him until the Chiefs prove they can complete a few passes downfield.
