I think it's hard to judge a coach after a single year, no matter what the record is. After the 2nd year is up, you can get a better feel for his ability (or inability) to adapt to the roster he's been given, to work with the GM and ownership to bring in talent he can coach and that fits into his system, etc.
I haven't been paying much attention to the Vikes for obvious reasons, but I think the issue of being forced to deal with a washed-up has-been QB and then moving to a rookie with no pro experience must have played a huge role. Hard to win in today's NFL without a solid QB unless you have a seriously good defense and offensive line to allow the running game to take over late in games.
Therein lies the fatal flaw in your argument. "You haven't paid attention to the Vikes," yet you're going to guess on Frazier?
You have no idea what's going on here. Leslie Frazier went from a solid hiring to a guy who is simply over matched and making mistakes that even rookie coaches shouldn't make.
This is coming from a guy who is plugged in on the
local Vikings scene. My sources are....
1. "Espn1500-Twin cities"
local radio.
2. "Minneapolis Star Tribune and St. Paul Pioneer Press"
local papers
3.
Local area sports blogs.
Let me break it down....
1. You indeed
can judge a coach if he goes 2-14 or 3-13 and see the mistakes (on field and off field) being made.
2. The talent he was given was worth a minimum of 6 wins, not this current debacle.
3. Did anyone see the end of the Denver game? Everyone knew the right thing to do at the end was to let Denver score so the Vikes have a chance with some time remaining. Frazier let the time bleed and Denver kicked a FG, game over. What's worse was his explanation in the post game conference. He said, "we could have blocked a 23-yard FG." Really Frazier!
4. Poor clock management in general.
5. And my favorite, taking timeouts right after a timeout or timeouts right after a tv timeout due to sideline confusion.
6. You said, "I think the issue of being forced to deal with a washed-up has-been QB."
Really karamazov80! Did you do any research here?
It was Frazier's decision to bring in Donovan Mcnabb! People within the organization knew this would be a rebuilding year but Frazier wanted to win now and chose Mcnabb to come in. It was his decision to bring in offensive coordinator Bill "bumbling" Musgrave too.
Here's what our local columnist Patrick Reusse wrote in the Star Tribune....
"And, especially, they were hasty in giving a three-year contract to Frazier based on rookie quarterback Joe Webb winning a postponed game that he shouldn't have in Philadelphia.
The latest of these hasty decisions looks to be the worst.
As a head coach, Frazier has the same overmatched aura as the Vikings' previous Les -- Steckel, the one-year wonder (3-13) of 1984.
It's one thing to have well-lubricated spectators chanting "Fire Childress" in a season of big disappointment. It's another to leave knowledgeable football guys shaking their heads from one Sunday to the next and muttering:
"What in the name of Marty Mornhinweg was Leslie thinking?''
Frazier is a nice fellow and a competent defensive coordinator, but as a head coach, well, put it this way:
The hasty twins, owners Zygi and brother Mark, would be far better off if Mike Tice was completing his 10th season on the job."
It amazes me when people can make an assessment about NFL teams
not in their home market.
