Stuff like this makes you just want to face palm and give your head a good shake. It's the whole, "What have you done for me now?"
mentality. It's stupid, but that's your average sports fan for you.
I have learned to be patient over the years, and not to be pulled into those highs and lows, as it happens more often than you think in pro sports. It's about sticking through the growing pains. I stuck it out 5 years and weathered the storm with my Pittsburgh Penguins through 01-06 when they were ____, and through that I took on a lot of heat and bull____ from other fans. I have guys like Dany Heatley who have sat on my fantasy keeper roster now for two years hoping they'll rebound, or at the very least take on some former resemblance of their better days.
I made the mistake of thinking Teemu Selanne's career was in the toilet and on the verge of ending when he went 78-16-16-32 with Colorado in 03/04. Traded him for a then 20-something Kyle McLaren that was showing offensive promise on the back end, I believe it was for San Jose at the time. haha... Legs surgery a year later, and in 05/06 he was back to his old former superstar self scoring 40 goals and 90 points. Of course I thought this was a fluke. Nobody goes from 16 goals and 32 points to 40 goals and 90 points the following campaign. Lots of guys had fluke years that season, see Jonathan Cheechoo with 56 goals and Brian Gionta with 48. Eric Staal had 100 points. I was like, the NHL is off its alignment. It took a year off with the lockout, and once things figure itself out and stabilize Selanne will come back down to Earth. 06/07 came along and he potted 48 goals and 94 points. One thing I can take from that and many other examples like it, you don't call bloody murder or demand a trade asap, or eagerly write off a guy.
I remember when all those Sens fans agreed with Murray dumping Zdeno Chara and keeping Wade Redden. How did that work out again? You goofball Leaf fans don't realize how important Luke Schenn is. He was a blue chipper for a reason. Every year his offensive numbers improve. He has led all NHL defensemen in hits and leads your team in blocked shots for the past two seasons, and the guy is 22. You want to throw that away? Of course he has defensive lapses... he is a ____ing kid! Dmen, defensive-minded dmen especially, take longer to develop! Let him mature a little bit more vs. throwing him to the sharks.
I also remember when Cory Schneider was stinking it up for the Manitoba Moose in his first pro season with us. He came after Wade Flaherty and basically took over as the starter from Drew MacIntyre. My two season ticket holder buddies at the time were like this guy blows. They should put Carebear in. That was Drew's nickname since he has Carebear stenciled on the back of his mask. Girly, I know. Anyway, I saw Cory's potential and said he would rebound this season and that he was new to the pro game. That there is the transition period from the college to pro game that needs to take place. Some adapt quickly. Others take time. Well guess what happened? Half-way into the season Schneids adapted and rebounded with the hottest 2nd half of any goalie in the AHL. Since then he's been declared the best NHL goalie that isn't a starter and his stock continues to rise. He'll be a top 5-10 NHL starter for many years.
____ing ignorant fans. Jeebuz!
