NYR choking on the Talbot maneuvers makes things better.

Explain.

Talbot was due to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2016, so they traded him at the height of his play and got 3 picks now instead of no compensation next year.

A year is a long time - it's not all or nothing with a FA. They waited too long for the teams itching to get a goalie, and got beaten out by the other teams trading mid-tier goalies. If they wait a little longer, they can catch teams realizing they're not happy with their starter or depth (though that's less likely). Sather overplayed his hand. He wanted a first rounder, and instead got a couple high double digits and a triple.

After the 1st 2 or 3 picks the NHL draft is a crap shoot from the remainder of the 1st round down. I can't think of a single player who was traded for a backup goalie this year that Ranger fans were clamoring for to fill a void, so choosing 3 draft picks now or nothing next summer for Cam seems like an easy decision b/c he is gone next year. Cam is too good to remain a backup.

Rangers got Lundvquist with the 205th pick of the draft, that was after 21 other goalies were selected and your Islanders took DiPietro 1st overall with their 1st round pick. 13 of the 21 goaltenders selected ahead of Lundqvist never played an NHL game. Two of them played in only one game. You never know...

Pitt lines next year

Kessel-Crosby-Malkin
guy-guy-guy
guy-guy-guy
guy-guy-guy

Letang-Matta
guy-guy
guy-guy

Fleury
guy

Not usually. Was just making a point. Their roster.....IMO.......sucks.

Really?

I think their top 6 is pretty good now

Kessel Crosby Kunitz
Horquist Malkin dupuis

Of course this is all predicated and Kessel and Crosby playing well together

Not a kessel fan but like the trade, we need to win NOW

Their bottom 6 and defense is atrocious. They will give up a lot of goals and if they makecthe playoffs that roster isn't built for it.

Ya, outside of Sutter, I don't know who's left, Bennett, Adams and a bunch of fillers.

Defence, with Erhoff and Martin gone, we will need to stay healthy, especially wet paper bag letang

Broken down old Prust for Kassien + 5th :lol

Marc Bergevin definitely got one over on Jim Benning there.

I didn't hate Don Sweeney's moves yesterday. Beleskey wasn't overpaid, Hayes has potential with the right linemates and finally the Marc Savard contract is off the Bruins books.

But the Habs still haven't addressed their main problem, better top6 forwards, and until they do, they are going nowhere

Oshie to Capitals now THAT'S a huge pick up.

Marty St Louis retires, and NYR still has a void at 1st line center......:gah:

That's been a huge problem for a while now.

Oh c'mon, your team has been a disaster since the changing of the guard. The Big Bad Bruins gave away Dougy Hamilton practically and to make things worse, he signed to a good deal/term with the Calgary Flames. Like trying to justify the Boston Bruins moving Tyler Seguin. Because how did that work out? The Milan Lucic deal was okay, but those picks were taken so far off the board. Don Sweeney could have gotten some of his guys with later picks. Then what do you do, you trade your third round pick away to get Zac Renaldo. My only guess he replaces Lucic's mean streak and nastiness, but without the actual can play the game part. Doesn't Boston realize they are phasing the goon player out of the game completely? And oh yeah, a 3rd round pick?! What were they thinking?!?!?!

This is a team doing a rebuild with a core/list of players who are not in that age group. Very contradicting concept there. Lots of questionable moves. Matt Beleskey while not a horrible signing isn't a good one either. He's a one season wonder who may or may not repeat. It's dangerous to sign a guy who had lots of help from playing with Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry. He also scored 15 goals in his first 34 games, which also meant he only scored 7 in his final 31 games. They don't have that kind of top end talent in Boston to help provide him with that kind of advantage. And finally, problem with Jimmy Hayes, while he's a decent offensive guy, he doesn't do anything extremely well and for a real big kid, like another certain big-bodied player (Nik Antropov), he has no mean streak and physical game to speak of. Such a waste. You have 6'6" and 230 lbs on you... use it big man!

The Pittsburgh Penguins did well considering... but also gave up some good future in the process. Having said that, they have a team of now, and who knows what their prospects would have done and if/when their arrival would be. Pittsburgh has a notorious history of drafting poorly beyond the first round. So maybe it was good to move the pieces, rather then see them blow up in our face. At least you get a known goal scoring threat. Now with two elite pivots to play off of, and no longer being "the guy", but one of "the guys", he could be the player that everyone expected him to become earlier in his career.

I do like that the Penguins also landed Sergei Plotnikov. Big-time Russian player who came with 17 teams interested in him. When you have that kind of buzz, you know there's something special there. Whether he adapts to the NHL game and meshes with fellow country man Geno, remains to be seen. But it's something. Rumour has it Pittsburgh is also looking at signing Alexander Semin for 1 year at 2 million USD. I can see Semin and Geno working, but with the Sergei signing it probably squashes that rumour, but it would be a cheap experiment to try out. A low risk, high reward one as well, and then there is the Jim Rutherford connection. As hard as DeezNutz and I, along with every other hockey fan has been on Jim's moves, especially that debacle that was top hitting bluechipper Simon Despres for Ben Lovejoy, he has improved our top six from...

Kunitz-Crosby-Dupuis
Neal-Malkin-Jokinen

to

Kessel-Crosby-Perron
Plotnikov/Semin-Malkin-Hornqvist

I'll take the latter over the first lineup. The Pens are also looking to unload Chris Kunitz, Paul Martin, and Rob Scuderi to open up some cap space. Having said all of that, we as fans of this team have had our hopes risen and dashed by one piss-poor post season after another. Lets hope this time it's different or we can see the same fate that Ray Shero and Dan Bylsma faced.

Biggest winners so far of the Draft and Free Agency....

Buffalo: (Jack Eichel pick, getting ROR for the package they did, only minus being his deal 7.5 per for 7 years and done in a way that was buyout proof)

Calgary (burning Boston on that Hamilton trade, then signing Michael Frolik for less than many felt he would go for)

Edmonton: (Connor McDavid. Nuff said... but boy oh boy, that horrible trade for Griffin Reinhart... Lets hope Talbot is every bit as good as a starter as he was as a backup. Adding Andrej Sekera was nice as well)

Toronto: (Mitch Marner is a Patrick Kane clone and Jeremy Bracco will make lots of teams regret passing up on him with the first 60 spots. Kid is unreal and will most likely be a player similar to Johnny Gaudreau and even Mitch Marner. Smaller package that has a tremendous hockey IQ and really elusive. It's sad how some players make the cut due to their size (Jonathan Drouin, P Kane and Marner), taken early, but then your Gaudreaus, Tyler Johnsons, Nic Petans, and Jeremy Braccos get taken with later picks. The Draft, Scouting, and all that other stuff kind of makes it seem like a crapshoot, don't it?)

Washington: (for their signings.... got some great pieces in T.J. Oshie and Justin Williams)

Winnipeg: (for drafting... Kyle Connor was a steal at No. 17 and they got two other great US forwards)

I am done for now. Tired and simply don't care to do anymore at this point.

P.S. The NHL Draft is something else to see in person. I highly recommend it! Didn't hurt that it was in Sunny Florida either. Great hot and humid weather (just the way I like it), with a great view. Loved the Keys! Had my feet in the Atlantic Ocean.... super warm water. On the other side is the Caribbean. Can't get any better than that. :)
