IMO one of the things I liked about this film - things were thought through. Stuff from previous films flowed naturally into this one, and at the same time Salazaar and crew, as ghosts go, were IMO a pretty original treatment. Not a rehash of the skeletons or DJ. Someone CARED.

I like Salazaar's hair floating around like he was still under water - I want an HT!!!!

I didn't like some of the continuity breaks but of them, the compass story was the only one that bothered me.

In OST I think the zombie concept failed to translate onscreen. Not once did I feel like the bald white guy was a Zombie. You also had to look really really close to notice the strings cut away from his mouth. Same applied to all Zombie crew.

The funny thing about OST is that Black Beards entire motive is based upon what the “White Bald Zombie” had foretold (offscreen). In essence a background character is the reason this whole movie exists.

IMO the compass was a bit muddled - think what annoyed me the most was I think they should'a made a more emotional? thing out of the recovery of the Pearl.
To me that's a BIG DEAL. That ship was huge deal to Jack Sparrow and even in OST he goes over a table to get to Barbossa about its loss - one of the few times we ever see Jack really angry.

To me it felt like that all flew by too fast. Maybe not for a general audience, but for me who loves the stories I wouldn't have edited it that way.

Didn't the Pirates ride at Disneyland used to have an ugly wife chasing a pirate in a roundy-round? I assume that's the origination -- but I'm shocked it got approved by Disney since its so mean-spirited.
OHH I FORGOT that's probably it then. I can't remember a lot of ride references in the movie, but maybe I just missed them.

And yeah, that and Drax's Mantis jokes in GOTG2 were surprisingly mean-spirited for Disney.

Re the wedding I gotta look up the brother's name - maybe a connection to the sea or other:dunno LOL Jack having a shotgun wedding:rotfl

Thank you re the story:) - I remembered that one 'coz we have the disease in our family:(. I liked how the man said his wife laughed and laughed. I could see it. Jack Sparrow makes me smile too, just looking at him:cool:. (May have been Depp himself talking about it in an article about the time of POTC1, and the response to Jack Sparrow). I'll try to dig the article up - maybe it was the Time magazine cover article from back then.

I'm real glad I saw this film twice IMO it's definitely one I could watch over and over.

Yeah I could definitely see that. The name sounded familiar, but I don't know what I remember it from. :gah: :lol

And sorry to hear, dude. Our family has some stuff too.

Jack such a funny character, especially in the new movie. :lol I'd love to read that article! I've seen the new movie a couple times too. It doesn't get old for me and I can't wait to watch it at home.

its funny how after COTBP, people/critc's said the rest of the franchise movies were ****!! I disagree. The POTC franchise is a guilty pleasure for me and I have enjoyed every instalment!! DMTNT is another great addition to this franchise and I look forward to repeat viewings on blu ray!! I was waiting for "Pintel and Ragetti" which would have put it over the top for me. Kind of wish they did not come that close to Barbossa's "strings"!! I enjoyed his character being just there for the ride and not have to worry about this outcome!!

Even 'Pirates of the Caribbean' franchise's "worst" movie is 100x better than most other flicks and franchise follow-up's out there. I'll watch them over and over again because they're so fun and there's subtly in every one of them. I think it's because "Curse of the Black Pearl" set such a high bar.

"On Stranger Tides" was on TV the other day and I definitely stopped channel-surfing and watched it!

They're extremely fun, enjoyable and say what you will about Depp, but his Sparrow character will forever be ingrained in popular culture and a "model" for future pirate movies.

Of course with 90% of them likely being non-POTC fans, the mainstream critics will watch the film with the sole intent of looking for flaws to trash it. But as far as I'm cornered, the critics can shove their negative reviews for this film where it's... well, you know. As a big POTC fan, I enjoyed the film quite a bit and I'm definitely seeing it again. :)

I'm just glad that something other than Marvel or a remake of a classic is doing well at the box office for a change. :yess:

My thing with the compass is that in Dead Man's Chest, Tia Dalma says "The compass you bartered from me can't lead you to this?" I thought that felt natural for Jack, he comes by a voodoo woman who has a magic compass and it would be his path to whatever he wanted. Turning it into an inheritance undoes that line for me. I also think they could have toned down how much of his outfit came from the crew offerings.

What would have been cool is making his hat something special he got from a captain he admired, that would tie into his obsession with his hat.

My thoughts exactly.

Thank you - yeah - always wonder if it's just all the processed food (chemicals) and junk we eat is part of it - not a health nut and like that but just doesn't seem NATURAL. LOL always loved Coke but you can use it to clean engines and toilets with so makes yah think....:horror

Gonna look for that article, wish I had saved a link:slap. Was all part of the interviews going on when POTC1 came out and Depp's "fey" unexpected portrayal of Jack Sparrow was everyones' darling. Huh. On the other hand just read yesterday that Disney and other studios are kinda PO'd because POTC and other films are geared to the public, not critics and arthouses. E.g. studios are taking a hard look at RT (owned by Fandango which I didn't know) and how it scores, because re POTC5 and other films studios think it is affecting BO.

Which, IMO, it is, to a degree. Like, "the critics" didn't like Russell Crowe's Robin Hood but I thought it was an interesting treatment and am still sorry there was no sequel. At least the articles are pointing out that AUDIENCES are giving high marks to POTC5:clap.

Well said IMO (tho LOL love what Marvel is doing especially the Russos!) I just really got the feeling that a lot of the critics were REALLY looking for reasons to dislike the movie, and right now I have the feeling (for whatever reason) that critics REALLY want to love Wonder Woman like they wanted to love IJ Crystal Skull.

Too bad, I'll always be up for more Jack Sparrow!

Too true. And an award-winning ORIGINAL portrayal that came out of Depp, alone. And kudos to Gore Verbinski for letting Depp run with it. How many will ever say that a moribund genre of films was single-handedly reinvented?

POTC, Alien, Star Wars, LOTR, Rocky, Godfather - not that many films/characters that become part of culture. A lot of Oscar winners can't say that.

Before knowing the story, I wasn't too happy with Barbossa's costume, but after seeing the film and watching Curse earlier today, I have a new appreciation for it.

In Curse, Jack offered Barbossa a big hat as Commodore Barbossa helming a pirate fleet. In DMTNT, it seems that in the time since OST, Barbossa took command of a pirate fleet, possibly the fleet Jack stole from Blackbeard, so the more royal outfit seems fitting for realizing that offer from Jack.

I also think they could have toned down how much of his outfit came from the crew offerings.

Yeah, it felt very 'Last Crusade' -- like young Indy on the train cars, Jack Sparrow's look is literally made in one single moment in time. In tribute.

This movie actually has a lot of 'Last Crusade' in it.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean 5: July 7, 2017

Well, POTC took the weekend box office, *predictably* I suppose. Tho it's not good enough re the "low overall Memorial Day numbers" tho I don't get it myself. (Maybe Memorial Day is supposed to be a big movie weekend but if I am at the BEACH which a lot of folks are that weekend, or camping, or traveling I don't go to the movies, just sayin'. 'Coz I'm tired because I was at the BEACH all weekend:nana:)

Anyway:

Box office update: Pirates wins, Baywatch sinks on worst Memorial Day frame since 1999
Sunday’s lowly three-day estimates were a portent of maritime disaster, indeed, as full Memorial Day box office projections were released Monday, cementing the four-day stretch — fronted by a pair of seafaring, ocean-centric newcomers — as the holiday’s worst since 1999.

Leading the pack with $77 million across the shallow frame is Dead Men Tell No Tales, Disney’s fifth installment in its successful Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, which collectively crosses the $4 billion global mark as the latest in the Johnny Depp-fronted series earns an additional $208.4 million from international territories. The film registers the second-lowest debut for a Pirates film (unadjusted for inflation), after the series’ launch, The Curse of the Black Pearl, opened to $46 million in 2003.

The good news for Pirates is that no movie did well. I think it's a multitude of factors, but I think this just wasn't a year people were looking to run to the theater with their holiday weekend.

The real tell will be if there's a huge drop off this coming weekend or not.

Hopefully good AUDIENCE buzz will help POTC. True re a multitude of factors re this past weekend - including parts of the U.S. having a lot of rain, storms; e.g. the urban areas/centers w. theaters haven't been fun to be hang around in like usual, at least where I am. Usually there would have been crowds milling about.

The theatre in my area was empty Sunday when I saw this- no one went to the movies apparently...sorta odd in a way

I just keep hoping that this is not the last one ever, either by Disney plan or box office figures, when this franchise comes to a close, I want a really good send off for it. This is a really solid entry in the series, but it's not crafted well as a final film if that be the case.

That rarely happens in any franchises.

Nor is there ever "an end" to a franchise in current corporate-run Hollywood.

Agreed, I've been fortunate enough to have some of my most treasured franchises get them. Rambo 4 was a perfect send off and at this point, it looks like no more with Stallone and if anything it would be a reboot later without him, which is fine, the Stallone Rambo series, which is what I watch and enjoy, has a solid start and end, great. Rocky, between Rocky Balboa and Creed has a great send off for the character, whichever you want to choose as a send off for him, either is satisfying for me, so I'm good there, again, future films will likely not include him or be a reboot and so be it.

I'm fine with Pirates continuing post Jack, but I think it should be essentially a reboot at that point, new universe and tales. I would like to see the Jack Sparrow era receive a proper send off. I actually would have been ok if AWE were the end, if we never saw Jack again, I'd be ok after that movie the way he ultimately gets the best of Barbossa despite what he tried, and that shot against the sunset is just awesome.
