Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

Yep, I skimmed through the thread but before I commit is there any issues with the figure that I should know about I mean I read about it being out of scale, but I don't plan on getting any other POTC characters..

As Craw says, it's very underrated.

The detail alone makes it well worth the price.

Davy really isn't out of scale with other figures. It's more that Will and Jack are just a little too tall relative to 1/6th as a whole. Davy will look great along side any other figures you have.

As far as issues, I didn't find any problems. Of course, each figure is unique that way sometimes. All I know is be careful with the key if you put it into the lock on the chest.

Davy's very poseable, very cool looking, very colorful and just a completely wicked figure all around. It will be one of the most eye-popping figures on your shelf, no doubt.

Thanks for the quick review WG :rock I actually just skimmed back and noticed your kitchen pics :lol very nice figure indeed!

glad to hear the height issue is with will and Jack rather than Davy and so this is a MUST HAVE for me! Will buy him as soon as I receive payment for an item I just sold :)

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

Davy is one of those figures that will definately stand out in your collection and give your display variety. He is very unerratedand and will probably be highly sought after down the road. As far as scale he is fine, standing next to all other Hot Toys he will fit in perfectly. If you want to nit pick, like myself, you could find something wrong with every single figure ever made.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

:lol ok I guess he will look just fine in between my preds and LOTRs stuff

love the shine he has to him

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

You know, rightly so, Joker's getting a great deal of praise from Hot Toys for his quality. To me, right now 3 figures stand as benchmark pieces for Hot Toys and Davy Jones is one, with Bank Robber Joker and Endoskeleton as the other. Granted, they do some amazing work in their military lines, but with the Endo, you've got a great piece of engineering and creativity, with Joker you've got an incredible mix of likeness and character blended into a head to toe beautiful figure, and with Davy, you have a blend of engineering and artistic genius.

To me, the greatest aspect of the Jones figure is the poseability. You'd think looking at him that pose-wise, you're looking at a crab man doing the robot dance or something, but he can duel and face off and get some pretty awesome looking poses the way they executed his construction, and clearly they spent a deal of time figuring out how to maximize his usefulness against his aesthetics and found an awesome blend. And as others have said, his size is fine, it's that HT has a poor height mix among it's lines, especially when you have specialty figures like Davy in a rubber suit and regularly clothed human figures, the base body tweaks play in and result in out of scale characters.

I must add Jor-El to that list, its an awesome sculpt but it doesnt get much love, unfortunately.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

Thanks Mauly, I think this piece will definitely be my fave until I get BR Joker then we will see who comes out on top :D

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

Well, overall, I think the first Joker, in hand, will be more impressive than the Bank Robber figure. Bank Robber has great heads, but other than that, it's fairly straight forward, but the first one is a tailoring marvel, especially if you've owned a fair number of multi-layered clothing figures where they puff up and look unnatural.

However, no matter what though, I don't think anything about a Joker figure can be more impressive than Davy Jones. Jones is just a marvel to behold between the general sculpting quality and detailing, the wonderful effect of slime/wetness they captured on him, a very impressive construction method that allowed him to look sharp while being significantly poseable. A straight forward Davy Jones would be the NECA figure, minimal posing, solid sculpting. Hot Toys looked at him and said no, we can make him look great AND give him versatility and they did. I never ever expected the poseability of the Davy Jones figure, I figured some basic sword stances or whatever would be the extent of it, but I got some really cool poses out of him which allow for some fun photos.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

Just got one off the bay :rock can't wait to see him up close. and if the posing capability is anything like what you are saying then i'm sure I will be very impressed!

...and Buttmunch I'm sorry but I struggle to a find a nickname for you meaning anything other than that you eat ass :monkey3

I have the DJ figure. Davy has a great sculpt but his plastic clothes give him a NECA appearance overall to me. I would put him 4th in the line behind the 2 Jacks and Will.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

I think it comes down to preference. I know a lot of folks wanted to see Davy with real clothes and all, but from day 1 I felt the rubber/plastic combination was the only way to go with him in order to get the detailing he requires, and it also allows the full figure to have the wet look. I don't see him as a NECA level piece at all, always see him as a high end figure and a top notch effort by HT.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

all those people that compare this to NECA or say that the NECA version is "just as good and cheaper" are smokin' some grade A ^^^^. dont listen to em J0KER. you'll love this guy.

Re: Official Hot Toys Pirates of the Caribbean Thread

oh yeah Davy is definitely worth having,HT had to make him plastic because of the wet look,to me it doesnt really matter, its a sweet figure!
The only issue is the height though...
