Fox did that on a few catalogue titles, Im so glad they did not mess Alien and Aliens bluray. They look fantastic! :yess:

Is the 1st edition that much of a improvement over the SE DVD upscaled?

It isn't 4K restoration like Taxi Driver or Sound of Music, but they did a fine job with this one. Grain and noise are there but so the details. It's much sharper compared to DVD and it still retained its original essence which UHE lacked. I recommended you to try it for I think it's the best representation of 1987 Predator to date, and it's very cheap too.
Edit: avsforum put original bd batch on tier 3.75 "copper" and UHE on Tier 4.5 "copper". Not much different, but worth it if you asked me.

I much prefer UHE. The picture is better, sound and a ton of extras. And it is part of the Trilogy blu ray set you can get with P2 and Preds for cheap at the same time. I dont get all this they ruined the movie stuff because it doesnt look like your watching it in a smoke filled room. There is tons and tons of comparison side by shots between the original release and the new one and the new one blows it away in terms of crisp and detail. But purists would rather watch it in lesser detail. Probably rather watch it on a old VHS. I dont get it.

For me, UHE is not what Predator is supposed to look like. It was meant to be grainy, dirty film which make you felt uncomfortable everytime you're watching it, like zombie films.
Now look at UHE... There rescue team faces' look vaseline'd. Dutch's face looks like a wax doll, and the jungle looks digitalized. Some parts of the movie are even worse. Try waterfall scene for example, that's one of the worst DNR in film's history!

There are a number of shots in the Ultimate Hunter Edition where they went overboard with the processing. But for more shots than not, I too find the Ultimate Hunter Edition to be an improvement over the original blu-ray release. In an ideal world they wouldn't have used any noise reduction, but between our two options I find the Ultimate Hunter Edition to be the less sucky edition.

Yeah I seen 1st edition for $11 on Amazon.

@ Bakurenoh each to their own. Im a AV purist and like to watch films as they were intended. This was a 80s film using 35MM cameras so grain is a part of the look. It was not made recently digitally like Avatar so I dont expect to see grain removed and along with it some fine detail. Its horrendous.

So the blu ray of Predator removes the grain effect? Well that was a bad decision to be honest. I was going to buy the blu ray quite soon too.
The grain gives the film a more gritty look and would just look strange to me without it. I think the grain really adds to the films atmosphere.
The grain might "hide" some detail, but so does darkness in horror films. Take away the darkness and the effect is lost.

Whats the best DVD edition to get of Predator 1987?

Only the Ultimate Hunter Edition has grain removed.
You can still get the 1st edition of the blu ray which retains the grain.

It's what blu ray is for though. If people don't like it they should just buy the standard dvd. I do understand what you mean about the grainy feel of the film, I grew up watching it that way. I have it on vhs, dvd, 1st edition blu ray and UHE and I do like the UHE. When he unmasks it's like you could just reach out and touch him for real.

I disagree.
Blu ray is meant to have more detail and colours etc.
It is not meant to have a grain free image. ALL movies shown in the cinema are higher resolution then Blu ray so if done right it can look stunning. The UHE removed detail which is what you notice first with Blu ray. The faces looks all smooth like wax when you are meant to see pores and imperfections in the skin.

Guess it's a good thing I have both versions to watch then right.:banana

:D

I paid £200 for HT P1 on play.com when he was first released.:pow

Thats not much more then the £180 for the Classic. The thing that bothers me is these HT figures are just higher end figures then NECA while Sideshow make statues and maquettes that actually look expensive. Im paying £145 plus VAT and fee for my Dog Alien from Sideshow so will be around £200 and not more I hope verses £180 for the HT Classic.

£200 was daylight robbery from play. I only paid £90 for Wolf. Once you get a HT's Pred in your hands, you'll realise why you paid the money for him. Plus you get more posing options and accessories.:yess:

I really do hope HT tries to bring back some poseability to some of the re-issued preds. I get sick of a figure after a few months and with my p1/BDp2/lost/and wolf predator I can't count how many times I've drastically reposed them and suddenly they were new to me again. I just have a feeling this will be lost with the new preds.
