Well, I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.

Personally, I don't see how you can have someone leading the Unites States of America that doesn't acknowledge our flag.

And if I was ever in a situation where someone tried to disrespect it, spit on it, burn it, I would do my best to "stop" it. Freedom of speech, etc, etc. etc, I'd still "stop" it, most likely with fists. You want to disrepect the flag, move to Syria or Iran. In the US, it deserves and commands respect. Try and pull that crap in some other country that doesn't have freedom of speech and see how far you get.

You would honestly get in a fist fight with someone if they didn't put their hand over their heart during the National Anthem, since you consider that disrespectful.

Not what I said, or maybe I did in a sense but not what I meant. I'll stand for and respect peoples right to free speech if they decide to not acknowledge the flag. But you start disrepecting it by spitting, burning, stomping on it, that I would not stand for.

All I'm saying is, don't disrespect the symbol of OUR country in front of me.

While I find those things wrong I find it more wrong to take away someones rights. However, I can see you like most on the side are ok with that.

You said earlier that not placing your hand over your heart during the Anthem is disrespectful, so I was going by that. The way I read read it made it seem like any form of "disrespect" would be met with Mesa's fists of fury.:monkey5

I needed to get to my class, I could've stopped and put my hand over my heart and do the NA...but, I needed to get to class. Does that make me unpatriotic?

Scott, there is a difference in not placing your hand over your heart and spitting on the flag or flicking it off, burning it... etc.

I would lose respect for Obama if he did those things, but not for clasping his hands and staring reverently at the flag... nothing wrong with that.

You know what, between what you just said here and what I said about how I was raised, it all makes sense now.

I was taught to respect and honor the flag during my early years in elementary school and that practice carried on to my adult life. Since Obama attended school in Jakarta (???) until he was 10 (see, I did read it The Josh), he was just not brought up to show respect to OldGlory and it carried on into his adult life. I'm guessing his later dealings with Rezco and Wright didn't help him gain that sense of patriotism. So now I can see, what I perceive as a lack of his patriotism is due to his upbringing.

Now that I understand it, I still don't like the fact that he doesn't show propoer respect to the symbol of the country he is running for president for.

And like you said Josh, there is no changing my mind on this. :D

Well, mesa then I guess I'm just a unpatriotic sob. I'd also like to thank you for questioning how I was raised. I think you might be a little too in love with yourself.

And McCain doesnt show proper respect to his opponent. ;)

Well, different strokes... It shows both sides of the political struggle.. You on one end, with the belief that homestyle rituals should all be followed to a T, and me on the other end, feeling that such rituals do not matter in the big picture.

What? :confused::confused::confused:

It has nothing to do with me.

It's quite simple, if you love your country, you show respect for it. Failing to show proper respect includes NOT putting your ahnd over your heart.

For you and I, if we choose to do it or not, not a big deal. You may insult a few verterans who put their life on the line defending this country, but they'll get over it.

But for someone running as THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, it is a big deal. Excuse me for having higher expectations of patriotism for somone running to be THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

But, as I have stated over and over again... it is all based on your belief that a ritualistic gesture decides patriotism. :monkey1

This whole argument is solely based on the belief that the gesture itself shows patriotism, which it doesn't.

I personally agree with this. It is my opinion that Obama was thoughtless in not observing the custom, whether or not it is significant to him personally. He should be aware that to many Americans, it IS significant, and observe it out of courtesy for them (or the desire to get their votes ;)), if for no other reason.

But at the same time, I'm not going to tell anyone else that they need to feel the same way. If it isn't as important to someone else, that is their choice to make.

Here guys, let me simplify it for you and put it in terms everyone can understand since there seems to be so much confusion on what is proper etiquette on respecting your country and your flag.

If you're ever confused about whether it's appropriate to show your respect for our country in the flag's presence, just ask yourself, "What would Captain AMERICA do?"

Edit: still looking for pic of Cap giving the pledge.
