Wait Atari game system had already been out for a couple years.

The first Atari (the one with a joystick) was a gaming system though no ? Not a personal computer. I could be wrong.

Plus in a day where many people are ditching cable/sat tv the option to use this for games, Hulu, Netflix, pay preview etc... makes it actually appealing to a new market.

Yet in a day when almost the entire world has an internet connection. It's apparently the biggest - OMG XBOX ONE SUX! - deal in the world for people to have it connected all the time.

Makes sense..... :slap:lol

I can see what X-box are trying to do. It does make sense really, although both consoles ultimately look capable of the same things - at least as of now.

Yeah it was a game system. I would say it was actually the first readily available device to play games. There were some txt based games and a couple graphical games but not many. When the Atari came out it was the real start of home video games IMO.

Only for the people who can't have it connected it all the time, which obviously doesn't include you or me, but does include a lot of other people who will either be incapable of using the Xbox One, or will have to occasionally be locked out of the system.

Maybe it is the inevitable future, and MS has every right to go this way, just like we have every right to think it's a horrible idea that alienates people who now might have to drop their favorite MS franchises, like the entire military. That seems like a perfectly valid opinion to me. :dunno

I don't see why we have to like it just because a majority of people aren't affected, the whole point is it will now shut out gamers from this generation, and it seems unnecessary, especially when broadband connections aren't that common in many countries.

How you push forward into the future if you continue to build for the present?

Mircosoft has decided it ready to push forward to future. When you do that sometimes people get left behind, it's just the way things are. I travel for work a ton, and it amazing how many places that just a few years ago had horrible cell phone infestructure and barely could hadle data, now they have 3G and 4g? Why because devices came out that people wanted that for all intensive purposes required these improvements. Sure it was in the cell phone companies benefit to do this but it was the demand for it that was the driving force.

This plan for the future is going to hurt initially but its also eveident that Mircosoft has a long term plan (see quotes that this is not a sprint) and in the long run could win or it could back fire but we won't know this year, we won't even know next year or the following few years. I remember a time when PS3 was getting dominated but sales wise they are fairly close now, although way behind the Wii(what does that tell you?)

Amongst the Xbox one features, I see some of them that are the future indeed.

The restrictions are not.

Microsoft needs to get rid of Don Mattrick. Everything he says comes across as douchy.

Yeah, but what MS representative doesn't these days? :dunno :lol

Plus he had a way to avoid answering tricky questions directly :pfft:

I don't see how having to get online every 24 hours to check in and having restrictions on game sharing is paving the way to the future.

Well, the internet check-in for Xbox One is DRM based, and I don't believe it is based on an attempt to force advancements in internet infrastructures for certain areas. I believe it's really them trying to change what it means to own a game, just like they said, that ownership is "morphing", and that bothers me, because it really means they want to control how you use the game you bought. I guess we just have a difference of opinion there.

I agree with you that things like cloud capabilities are likely to become more widespread, and I understand them pushing for that. But all the features of the Xbox One could have been implemented without having to check into the internet to play your games offline. And all that cloud computing to help processing power sounds exactly like what the Sim City people said, although everyone knew they were lying, and they basically had to admit it was just DRM. We'll see how that turns out for MS, but right now it's just a thin excuse to cover up what is really DRM.

I want to make it clear, I have nothing against the people buying the Xbox One, I'm just bothered when they dismiss or insult those who are against and who will be affected by the DRM, that seems pointless and reeks of fanboy idiocy. We're not bashing the people buying, we're criticizing MS for their policies.

Ownership is not "morphing", they're misrepresenting and twisting the concept to their own interest.

You buy something, it's yours, period.

I really don't think the 24 hr check-in alone is so bad, as an anti-piracy measure only.

But the fact that they want to take ownership away from the customers is what borderline pisses me off.

Hell, now even the multiplayer pass looks good.

Well saying the Internet checks are not needed sounds great in theory, but its not in reality.

So yes the Internet checks allow for them to enforce the DRM, it would also be required for things like the family plan to work unless they only allowed family plan for digital downloads( people would also ***** they can't do this with physical media) Without it a family would be allowed to buy a game disk, install it (giving access to the whole family) then go sell or trade it in. Since the disk is not required for the family to play the game if you never connected again your would have essentially pirated the game. Sure they could make it a longer time period, would you feel better if it was 48 hours, 72 hours ect.. I would guess that Mircosoft would have much preferred to move to 100% digital download system but knew that people are not ready for that.

It still baffels me that so many people belive this DRM system is all Mircosofts idea or that they are 100% to blame. Yeah yeah Sony didn't do it, and I am certain that we have not seen how that will play out. You would have to be a fool to belive Microsoft didn't gain something from publisher who also wanted this.

The DRM is definitely their idea, it's part of a system that supports their game trade-in scheme. There's other ways of supporting anti-piracy and their game activation system without requiring a 24-hour check. If you reduced it to simply going online to activate a game or deactivate a game then it would work much better. But it would mean that Microsoft couldn't force Gamestop to give a part of pre-owned game sales. By restricting the deactivation of games this way it means that Gamestop can't resell games without getting them deactivated by Microsoft. If that weren't happening, they could very easily just allow people to activate and deactivate a game online from their consoles and never need people to go online unless they get a new game or need to deactivate a game. Very few people would stay offline forever to be able to play a game for free that they sold, since it would mean never getting any new games or using multiplayer features.

Actually the system only upholds what you have agreeing to on virtually every game you have played. I wish I had access to a EULA but everyone I have read has stated that your may not sell, trade, barder, gift ect.. the software. They also normally state that only they have the ability to sell the license to the software.

Very good post , I agree entirely.

The military "thing" is a total non event for me. It's media propaganda at it's best. Who cares really? Not me. I can't use my telephone at work due to reception issue's. Should I make a stand against all phone company's?

A few people seem to be missing the point that Sony made about the games. As far as I know , yes the launch games can be swapped and traded with friends but Sony have said they are leaving it up to the publishers. Which could (and probably will) mean they will end up in the same spot as the XB1.

I also day by day really respect that MS have their vision and this is it. No farting around, it's this way or the high way. They are saying "this is what we've got" no bending to crying fanboys. Whilst on the other hand PS seem to be piggy backing on the wave of XB1 hate and are crowd pleasing.

Come release I'll be surprised if it's as black and white as it appears to be right now. Details will come to light.

Right now like everyone else I'm in the PS4 camp but I want to see more than just XB1 slander and the fact I can swap games with my mates.

If the publishers notice a trend that 7/8 game purchases are for the Ps4 i think they would have to be incredibly stupid to implement that system.

Or incredibly smart depending on which side of the fence you're sitting on. :wink1:

Playstation sell you the dream.....next minute. What's to stop them using their initial launch to gain mass numbers then turn the tides a year down the track? Nothing really.

Why? If they implement it on PS4 then they know they now have a restriction of used game sales on 8/8 game purchases. Unless people flat out stop buying games by publishers who don't allow direct used sales ( fat chance people stop buying games) the publishers have all the power.

Maybe someone can clear this up for me. I keep seeing family plan mentioned. If I buy one copy of the new XBone games will my family also be able to play that "game" on their profile? If so can we all play that game at the same time?

From what I understand, you can have up to 10 people on your "family" list. They can use the same copy/download that you buy, but only two can use the game at the same time and even then, only single player. You can't have 10 people playing Halo online together using one payed copy. How a "family" member is qualified, I don't know. Under the same roof maybe...IP address check? Or some kind of verification that can be done online?
