Re: Rainman Artwork 2013 NYC Cabbie "God's Lonely Man"

I don't understand why people choose to bash customs and their prices, if you don't like it then don't buy it, and don't judge others for buying it, the most expensive paintings in the world were painted with the same materials I can go buy at my local store but thats not what makes them so expensive, its the talent behind it, so saying a custom figure shouldn't be high priced is pointless, these figures aren't crapped out in a factory and there isn't 10k of them, they have amazing accessories and clothing, these are characters that most will never be produced, they are hand made.

At the end of the day, I don't care if it's a factory job or a custom one, I buy what I like. Now, personally, $1200 can buy pretty much every official product I want from Hot Toys for the coming year, and that'd be my preference, but, for a lot of people, just like I might see a must have Batman for my collection, a Travis Bickle is an absolute necessity. Buy what you love. I'll get what wets my whistle, and you can get what wets yours. I see a lot of stuff from Hot Toys that I can buy, and I can probably own two of them for what I'm paying for the IMINIME Cowboy (I know this because I had to sell two to get him :lol), but I wouldn't have it any other way, as Blondie is a must own character for me.

Haha ya I guess it all comes down to buy what you like and whatever your willing to pay for it, end of story

Re: Rainman Artwork 2013 NYC Cabbie "God's Lonely Man"

I just wanted to stop in and put my two cents out there, I realize that dropping into a thread like this is only likely to lead to nothing good, the crowd here seems very hostel but here goes.

I'm not a rainman fan, I'm not even into 95 percent of the custom figures out there and not cause there not cool, cause they are, some are amazing. Theres a few reasons why I don't bother with the idea of buying into the whole highend custom figures realm.

Number one is there ridiculously priced, yes there limited, yes there nice, and yes the artist deserves to be paid for his or her time and effort and talent. You might think be thinking oh, this guy just can't afford them so that's why his not into them, you would be wrong.

The reason I believe there over priced is because they are, no 1/6 figure is truly worth 1500 to 5000 dollars. Sure a some people might pay that so you might say well if it sold for that its worth that, I call bull **** on that. I really don't mean to insult this artists work but I'm afraid I there's no other way to get my point across, that is not Robert D, close but no cigar.

This custom is an unlicensed product that barely resembles the actor and costs 1500 bucks, where as I could get a licensed figure that's completely accurate to the actor and costs 200-300 bucks. Yeah I'm talking about hot toys for the most part.

Look at Trevor Groves stuff, he used to sell his sculpts here for like 35-50 bucks, now whats happened.

I'll tell you what I think happened, the custom figure flippers, the guys who always buy every top end custom figure at release, call it a grail, praise it like it was sent from above then wait til its sold out and bam, you have all seen this in the sale section

"I hate to have to do this cause its my grail, but here I have x custom figure here for sale $5000.00 dollars"

Yet they sell it anyway, nearly every time. They sell there grail figure, time and time again. They also got a built in cheer leader squad to, they pop into the sale thread with " I would totally buy that right now if I could"

There's a lot of great customs here, rainman's stuff included, and they deserve to be compensated for the efforts, but I think this high end custom realm of figures prices have ballooned to far, and that bubble is going to pop eventually, It happens on a figure by figure basis.

Look at all the custom crow figures that were suddenly for sale after hot toys announced theres, they got dropped like a bad habit.

And there are comics, stamps, screen used props, original paintings and sculptures and tons of other things that go for obscene $$$ in their respective categories. This is collecting brother; it's ALL perceived value.

Part of the big draw to the custom world is you're able to get characters that are likely never going to be made officially so you do make a good point with the fact that when a licensed co. announces a fig many times people are rushing to dump their customs. But there have been occasions where the official company didn't out-do the custom too. However, I can't lie and say that I think that RM, Iminime or any other customer here would have done a better job with Carlito. I got BW's Carlito for $170 and it's pretty much a perfect fig; can't beat that.

Having said that, has a custom fan you appreciate the feel and the essence of handmade figs; hand sculpted, hand painted hand tailored. They just feel different than the factory made stuff. If you don't appreciate that then the mass produced stuff suits you better.

It doesn't pay to try to explain why customs cost what they do initially and in the secondary market to people who do get it. There's a whole science behind... best to save your breath :lol

I bet they get why a DX12 fetches $450 right now though :monkey1

I know its all perceived value, I get it, just seems to be ballooning out of control from where I stand, but to each there own. I realize there are certain figures that manufactures won't make and that's where custom figures shine, its a cool thing these are available though these artists as it offers collectors something they could not get otherwise. That's where the value comes in to play.
