I like Ellison, but I'll freely admit he's a complete leech when it comes to Terminator. The similarities to his work are so broad and vague, you could make a much stronger case for the makers of Judge Dredd suing Verhoeven for Robocop.

That's how things used to work, really. Creators would riff on each other's ideas and what had come before to create something original. People used to be able to appreciate the merit in that, but now every jaded hipster with an internet connection is ready and waiting to accuse anything with a clear through-line of inspiration of being 'plagiarised'.

Frankly I'll take the old way of doing things over the new system of brand name reliance and middling studio-compliant talent diluting the legacy of great entertainment with endless sequels, remakes, reboots, etc.

I don't get it. Can you provide a fake example using that system and how you get the final score?

Just watched Temple of Doom so I will use that.

Casting 2/2
Story 1.7/2
Score 2/2
Cinematography 1.8/2
Re-watch Value 1.5/2

For a total of 9/10

Small variations in each category allow for me to break movies out that would otherwise be hard to decide on.

This certainly isn't for everyone. Just the method I use.

What did people like about Sicario? Some were praising it, personally I didn't enjoy it and was waiting for it to end. Fine movie, great cast, some great shots, just not for me. I didn't understand the point of Emily Blunt, seems like it should have focused all on del Toro.
Not liking the narrative switch-a-roo as an allegory of how one (as the faux main character AND us) has not the slightest clue of what's really going on, yet the audience is fully aware and knowledgeable about the real main character... smh tbh fam

-Slick, almost soothing cinematography in juxtaposition with the grim topics of the movie.
-Simple yet effective and eerie score.
-Fantastic cast
-Even better performances
-Compelling dialogue
-Overflowing with cold commentary from both sides on one of the most relevant topics to today.

Not enough light swords doe.

Well I'll be damned...that system might work for me...let me try it.

TOD

Casting 1.4/2
Story 1.2/2
Score 2/2
Cinematography 1.8/2
Re-watch Value 1.1/2

For a total of 7.5

Works for me. Let me try it with TFA...my original score without a system was about a 6.5

TFA

Casting 1.4/2
Story 1/2
Score 1/2
Cinematography 1.4/2
Re-watch Value 1.7/2

For a total of...6.5

Not bad :lol

How to Train Your Dragon 2: 7/10

Surprised at how pretty good it was--just about the same level as the first. Impressed at how they raised the stakes.

I like Buddy Gus' system. I'll take mine and mesh it with his. I weighted the enjoyment factor heavily because honestly I don't care how well a movie is made, if I don't enjoy watching it, how can I justify giving it a great rating? But here ya guys go, following this I guess I'd have to give Cameron's dumb movie more than a zero. But I haven't seen it in years so couldn't properly review it with this new system. I'll try out an OT film, a PT film, and TFA.

I could then go on a detail how or why I derived each score. But I won't. This was just a test. Here's a comparison of how I rated these three movies earlier without giving it much thought:

Not far off the mark!

The funniest part about that is I didn't type that on my phone and can't blame swipe text :slap

As for my Enjoyment Factor of TFA, I should disclose I'm an EU fan and I prefer the story told in the books, games, and comics I grew up with to the rehashed ANH/EU story that TFA is to me. I think I'd bump that score higher to a 4 or a 5 if I knew nothing about the EU and therefore would end up giving the movie as a whole a higher score. I'm not hating on it. I've acknowledged it as a good movie and now I'm moving on with my life.
