Mad Old Lu
Super Freak
The Double: 4/10
With Jesse Eisenberg playing a (grueling) double role. His character is spineless and meek, works at a data processing plant and pines for the photocopy girl. One day, someone who looks exactly like him is hired, but is his complete character opposite—outgoing and charismatic. It has Brazil-like set designs, and is shot like a 1985 sci fi movie/TV movie. Not kidding, it could literally be from 1985 and no one would doubt it. Only the actors would give it away. The ending is also very vague but in a contrived way, and the movie feels like it doesn’t really know what to say. It’s an interesting concept, but I think it would have benefitted from a little more energy and zip and a more defined message especially because it so closely resembles Brazil. You’re only reminded at how much better Gilliam’s movie is.
