Got to agree, it definitely transcends genres. It's a pretty disturbing film to watch thanks to the special effects, but what really gets under my skin watching it now is the relationship dynamic and the human performances. I wish Hollywood would go back to making more of these thoughtful, lower-budget genre films aimed at adults.
Most of Cronenberg's early work is pure gold. Scanners and Videodrome are two films I can watch endlessly and never really get bored of.
I also had no idea he almost made a proper sequel to this. I guess it's time to read up on that and be sad...
I'd give an arm to at least see the script... IIRC FOX wanted to go a cheaper route since Cronenberg wanted really high end effects. Amazing to think studios would pass on an obvious hit and would rather put out **** on the cheap.
I'm sure Chris Walas would return too to do the effects.
I love Scanners and Videodrome too, more of Shore's excellent music in there. Videodrome predicted the Internet.
