The cape thing is stupid. Cool but stupid.

I thought that was Ian Mckellen as a white Magneto or something. Is that the annoying dude with the lisp that Bane rapes from TDKR?

I had seen the trailer without sound because I was at work, just saw it with sound and I can see why the concern about another possible Mary Sue.

:slap

Why do strong female characters have to be so tryhard now? What happened to the Sarah Connors and the Ripleys who were so ****ing cool without even trying? Even Sarah Connor who was a kind of an edgelord never came across as such a tryhard. :lol

Having had that mini rant, I hope there's a lot more to her character, some flaws and vulnerability, because that last shot of her in the pilot was pretty cool, implying she could be a baddie, although we know she's probably just infiltrating or something.

The trailer was great, I loved the tone, I loved the music, I loved the designs, except for Yip man being so samurai-like without a lightsaber.

Can't wait!

Gary Oldman would've been nice as that Grand Admiral but we shall see.

i reacted the same way to the at-ats as I did when they first showed Kylo Ren's saber. Just seems like a cheap "oh, cool!" kinda thing. Other than that, super snoked!
(Thanks jye :lol)

I'm not saying she's a Mary Sue, we don't know yet, I'm saying I see why the concerns about this new one possibly being another Mary Sue. And just for the record, Rey IS a Mary Sue, I like her character, but she most definitely is one, no one is throwing around the word inappropriately.

She could still be a good, strong and flawed character and that line was just an unrepresentative lame line.

It's not the attitude either, the attitude just makes her look tryhard, for all I know she's one of those characters who are tryhard but **** goes wrong for them every time, I would be ok with that.

Rey really isn't a Mary Sue since the nature and mystery of her abilities is addressed, has precedent in the series, and is clearly an intentional omission, to be explained later. Of course that term have become such a catchall at this point that it's got no real value. But I think we've been down this road before so :duff

Re: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (12/16/16)

I'm happy Star Wars is giving us lead, strong female characters.

It's not as if you guys don't have lead male characters who are good at everything and stronger/more powerful than you'd imagine either.

Re: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (12/16/16)

No one ever dismisses Luke as a Gary Sue. Not saying it's definitely male bias but may well be.

That doesn't not make her a Mary Sue. In fact that has nothing to do with it, and no it doesn't have precedent :lol I also don't think the term has lost meaning at all, in fact I'm hesitant to say the following because some people could probably get triggered :lol but Rey being a Mary Sue is pretty much a fact. Objective, quantifiable and verifiable. And like I said, I like her, but make no mistake, she is a Mary Sue.

No one ever dismisses Luke as a Gary Sue.
That's because he's not one.

Re: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (12/16/16)

Prove your point then. You can't just say "this a fact" with no content and expect people to buy it... unless you are running for president.

An idealized and seemingly perfect fictional character, a young or low-rank person who saves the day through unrealistic abilities... not ANH Luke?

He's not, Luke is pretty terrible and fallible hero (which is what makes him awesome). He made plenty of mistakes.

Okay. Luke is useless and inadequate in ANH, that automatically makes him the farthest thing from a Gary Stu.

In short (because I can quote paragraphs and paragraphs explaining countless Mary Sue traits that Rey will fit into like a glove)... Rey is liked by everyone, can do everything required by the plot without effort, her abilities are far too exceptional even for Star Wars, has no notable weaknesses, physical, emotional or mental or traits that work against her, etc etc, that is a Mary Sue even by definition.

He's not, Luke is pretty terrible and fallible hero (which is what makes him awesome). He made plenty of mistakes.

Exactly, hell, a major reason why TFA happens is because Luke ****ed up :lol

Please explain further. I'm truly interested on your viewpoint on this. Mary Sue's (and Marty Stu's) are typically portrayed as overly perfect/idealistic characters within fan fiction. In my many watching's of any Star Wars movies there's not any characters (male or female) that struck me as Mary Sue or Marty Stu's. Especially since it's a movie universe set-up where people have special abilities (the force), can make weapons that will destroy planets, can exist as Force ghosts and so on.
