I saw AOTC twice opening weekend and both times the audience was absolutely guffawing at many of Anakin and Padme's scenes together. Now there WERE also cheers when Yoda lit up his saber, that was a fun moment to experience for the first time. But after a few viewings the stupidity of even that scene reared its ugly head and never let go.

force yourself to sit through TPM and AOTC then ROTS plays somewhat well.......great music though and Hayden Christensen does look cool as a pre-Vader Jedi. Ewan carries every scene he's in (poor guy) but overall there's more bad then good.
Again ...Yes

I still hold that ROTS can fit in with OT......Its where my Saga begins when I watch. Edit out the NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! and edit a few other scenes a bit better, and you have a good film.

Parts the fix?
1. Mace vs Emporer (need to be some more motivation there for Mace and what he was plotting.
2. All of Anakin and Padmes scenes need fixing.
3. Less over the top Anakin Obi battle.
4. Cut out just about everything the Droid do.
5. Total reshoot of Obi and Grievous battle...

I remember those discussions because I participated in them. ...the bashing was constant and only got worse with Attack of the Clones.

You fought in the clone wars? :monkey3

Yes I was once an apologist the same as your father. :)

By the way here's the Harmy discs that your father wanted you to have when you were old enough. Actually that's not true at all, I just made that up because I enjoy lying.

I didn't hate the prequels when I saw them, but I was never a big SW fan. To me the OT was just another trilogy that I liked. I went to see TPM with my brother who is 11 years older than I am, so SW was his favorite childhood movie back in 77 and early 80's. When we walked out of TPM, he was very quiet and I remember saying it was ok and mentioning how much I liked the underwater city and the final fight, but he was clearly disappointed, even though I don't think I noticed at the time.

When we saw AOTC, I remember there was already a lot of hate towards Jar Jar because we made fun of how quickly Jar Jar was dismissed by Padme in the sequel. :lol There were a lot of WTF moments in that film. The biggest one was the Yoda fight...that was the moment my brother gave up on the prequels :lol I had to convince him to go see ROTS just to watch Vader's transformation. Ahh...good times...sort of :lol

I'm sure your brother's experience was that for many of us on here. For me TPM did so little for me that I never bothered to see AOTC in the theaters and watched it alone on DVD when it came out and thought it stunk. Took some good friends who were good at laughing at the faults of the prequels to get me to see ROTS in the theater.

I thoroughly enjoyed TFA, felt the magic (or whatever) was back for Star Wars, but walked out thinking/saying that it was a bit derivative of ANH (and also really disliked the Rathtar scene). For me Rogue One tops TFA in part for that very reason, it felt very original, and my flaws with it are fewer and more minor. Obviously helps that it's set in the OT era. I can't rank anything over an OT movie though.

When I first saw the Phantom Menace I didn't hate it. I didn't like Jar Jar and the gungans but I thought it was alright. Even then I knew to seperate it from the Original Trilogy. I had a good time with Episode I as far as an "event" goes with the movie, hype, trailers, speculation, merchandise, etc. I knew it wasn't good, but I enjoyed that year from a "return to Star Wars" perspective. I was more interested in the behind the scenes stuff around that time anyway since I was getting into documentaries and films. I liked seeing the insight and concepts that went into making it. Overall I thought it was harmless, though I thought having a 9 year old kid be Anakin and a fully CGI, annoying, sidekick was a mistake.

Attack of the Clones did absolutely nothing for me. I remember liking that Darth Vader breathing teaser trailer and the "jedi shall not know anger" teaser poster. There was a sneak peek photo in Star Wars: Insider of what looked to be Obi-Wan suffering (I thought Anakin had a vision or something) and the inclusion of Boba Fett (didn't know that was Jango) and Christopher Lee intrigued me. I assumed it would be a more mature chapter. Once I saw a later trailer with Yoda wielding a lightsaber and C-3PO as a battle Droid, I was out. Hated the idea of it. I saw it once and it bored the hell out of me (other than the small tidbit of Obi-Wan being a detective) especially everything on Naboo. I didn't like it at all. I was more into the Spider-Man film and LOTR that year. Only thing I bought was a little Jango figure. I'll probably never watch AOTC in it's entirety ever again. It has the worst story and effects of all 8 movies.

Episode III was fun. The teaser and hype was great and I had a really exciting theater experience with it (got to go to a special screening a week and a half in advance with friends and I remember the screening was fantastic, especially the sound). I know people here rip the hell out of it, but at the time I didn't think it was awful. Loved Palpatine. Most of his scenes had me grinning from ear to ear. I liked seeing all the Jedi get slaughtered and I thought the clone troopers were really cool. There were little moments like Palpatine rescuing burn victim Anakin mirroring Ben rescuing Luke that really resonated with me for some reason. Collecting was fun again around that time too. I think it exceeded my expectations because they were really, really low. I don't like it as much as I did in 2005, but it was a fun movie. In fact, I was more excited for it than I was with Batman Begins believe it or not. My biggest disappointment was how much of a coward and mustache twirling villain Grievous turned out to be and now they handled Dooku, but the non-Palpatine villains were always problems in these prequels. It hasn't held up for me, but in 2005 I was satisfied with it and happy the saga was finally over . . . ugh.

I know the prequels are bad but I don't hate them. Never have. I used to make rants about how it didn't match up to the Original Trilogy and how none of the continuity made sense as well as how ****** the acting and wrtining in them are, but I enjoyed 1999-2005.

I memba the MTV special from Skywalker ranch, and all these celebrities getting to watch an early screening of AOTC. They were all saying how good it was and Ozzy Osborne's kid saying it was as good as ESB. I think he was smoking a cigarette too like he'd just finished having sex :lol Then there was all this talk about the epic Yoda scene, and I was like what could be so interesting about a Yoda sequence? He's a puppet, always sitting on something or barely walking, what could be so epic? :lol

One thing that greatly enhanced my initial viewing of ROTS was the Tartofsky Clone Wars cartoon. He did the most in the 1999-2005 era to make SW "cool" again which helped build my excitement for the final prequel which was largely fulfilled even if it was short lived. Sure Grievous wasn't the badass he was in the cartoon but I still liked seeing him in live-action nonetheless.

Great, honest post.

The Yoda with a lightsaber **** pissed me off. If this board was around in 2002, I'd have been losing it about Yoda and everyone would be telling me to shut the **** up, stop being cynical and that Yoda with a lightsaber is a coooool idea. There was this whole cliche with people saying that Yoda with a lightsaber was something they always wanted to see. Not me.

Thing is, I actually thought Yoda looked cool just chilling in the Republic gunship with his cane. No idea why they gave him a lightsaber. I swear there was an interview with Lucas and Gary Kurtz from the 80s where they said Yoda doesn't need to wield a lightsaber or something.

lolololol great ending.

The TPM dvd making of documentary also broke new ground, still great to watch now.

Man who doesn't remember downloading that first TPM trailer on their 56.6 modem lol.

The build up was indeed epic because we had just come off the SE and Star Wars.com and The Force.net were super popular at that time.

I remember being blown away by the Maul fight but not the pod race as many were.

I forced myself to accept TPM as acceptable while non SW fanatics friends and family with clearer vision were looking at me like I was nuts, they knew it was crap right away lol. They thought I was nuts for sleeping on a sidewalk in Manhattan for tickets.

AOTC trailer looked amazing, we know how that turned out. Yoda with lightsaber was a major fail, **** those ILM animators.

ROTS was exciting because of how dark it had to be, honestly it still made me cringe on first viewing.

Believe you me, I cringed some during TFA.

Same. I never wanted to see Yoda flipping like a gremlin on coke, I always thought Yoda in his prime wouldn't have any need for a light saber, I thought he'd do stuff like Kylo Ren does with the force, like freeze people entirely, or other cool telekinetic stuff without moving an inch, not even waving his hand.

But nope, I guess that's not cool.

Yup, I used to think Yoda was above such weapons, like the Emperor (in ROTJ)....until he too used a lightsaber in ROTS, but by then I was used to it, so it wasn't as shocking as seeing Yoda go from an impaired old man with strong TK to Spider-Man level fighting skills and athleticism, then go back to limping with a cane after he was done fighting :lol

I
That wasn't "denial" at the time. It was SW fans enjoying SW films without trying to impress one another online with crap like "There are only two SW movies: Star Wars (1977) & ESB."

Oh this is too funny. Found an old post of MINE (actually it was an entire thread I started) from alt.fan.starwars dated 10/15/99:

Hi:

I haven't lurked or posted here since May (for those who may remember,
I only had a Webtv at the time) so I'm no doubt waaaay behind the times
with regard to "newsgroup consensus" on current SW issues. I'm curious
as to how well TPM went over with AFSer's. Specifically (but not
exclusively) I'd like to hear the opinions of people who, like me, saw
and fell in love with the original trilogy when it was first released.

Personally, I DON'T consider TPM to be canon. It was a good movie, but
as an official chapter of the SW saga I sadly dismiss it. There were
just too many holes/inconsistencies/lame twists when looked at in the
context of the classic trilogy.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the film (hell I saw it 4 times) but each
successive viewing only reinforced my convictions. Then again, I'm a
total die-hard fan and I don't even consider *ROTJ* to be canon, at
least when I'm watching ANH and ESB (the whole twins/ewoks/weak
Vader/weak Boba Fett stuff was just too much of a departure from ESB
for me.)

I look forward to Ep. 2, but with some hesitation. The knowledge that
George "Are you an Angel" Lucas is writing the dialogue for the "love
story" chapter almost makes me shudder. Any thoughts? Comments?

So yeah, SNIKT, there were indeed those of us who dismissed TPM the very year it was released and only held on to SW + Empire (literally.) TFA and RO have since reconciled Jedi for me.
