also- in regards to ANH. is it really that great? or do we just hold it on a pedestal because of what it is? if someone gave me the choice to see ANH or RO right now, I'd pick RO.

"It would be extremely painful."

"You're a big guy."

"FOR YOU!!!! Ha ha ha, you weren't expecting that response were you!"

I always think it's a bit silly when someone makes a partial statement that demands the other person to "set them up" for the remainder.

What if the CIA guy just shrugged at Bane's "extremely painful" line. Would he have grown impatient and said "And just so you know I meant painful for you..."

Or like in Matrix Revolutions when Sarif (the Oracle's guardian) says "Herro Neo, I'm afraid I must apologize," and then Neo says, "For what?" "For THIS" and then Sarif attacks Neo and they begin a sparring session.

But what if Neo didn't give him that exact answer?

"Herro Neo, I'm afraid I must apologize."

"Whatever it is don't worry about it."

"Grrrr, you screwed that up, hiya!" *begins attacking Neo anyway*

"Whoa, what the hell dude!?"

:lol :lol :lol

Yeah real life verbal sparring rarely works out so well.....come to think of it Batman's ''No, I came back to stop you'' is quite apt in that context.

I kind of get what you mean. ROTJ is like that for me. I LOVED it as a kid, and still like it, but it's impact is certainly lessened with time for me. I still rewatch ANH now and like it as much as I did before, so it's still "that great" for me.

My list in order would be:

ESB (although this was not my favorite as a kid)
ANH/RO (I feel like I can cheat here and combine them, they're so complementary)
TFA
ROTJ
ROTS
TPM
AoTC

I am now certain I rank TFA below any OT film quite simply because I don't know if it's the continuation from the ending of ROTJ that I want. The repetition not only of the superweapon idea but the whole First Order basically just being the Empire again, Ren being Vader, Snoke being the Emperor, the resistance being the Rebel Alliance. Nothing changed in the galaxy and the heroes ended up having **** lives anyway. Their victory in ROTJ was utterly squandered. None of it sits well with me. This feeling was there right from the first viewing and has only gotten worse with time, subsequent viewings and the discussions here.

I still feel reluctant to shake off my childhood love for Return of the Jedi. I mentioned here or in another thread that I saw ESB and ROTJ many times before I ever saw ANH. So going from the ROTJ battle sequences to the ANH battle sequences always seemed like a step-down for child me and I kinda still feel that way even though I recognise the arguments for why ROTJ started the rot that led to the prequels. Furthermore ROTJ itself was the first to take the lazy option of just repeating the superweapon idea.

So, if I'm 'objective' about it

ESB
ANH
RO
ROTJ

Nothing else is canon to me.

Perfect ranking, perfect canon.

I think we can all go home now, it's been fun gentlemen.

Every 'good' Star Wars movie basically gets a seat at the #3 table, at least for awhile. Until the next 'good' one -- or new one -- comes out.

Will Ep 8 unseat RO? Then will people revisit TFA since it connects and sets-up 8 and place it right above RO again?

Magic Eight Ball says "Highly Likely"

The best thing RO has going for it to survive is its direct attachment to the best of the OT -- ANH. That attachment could keep it at #3 for a very long time.

Anything is possible but for Episodes 8 and 9 to truly feel like satisfying canon then they will not only have to be at least as good as RO/ANH/ESB/ROTJ individually but Episode 9 will have to end on such a high note that we're actually glad that ROTJ's victories were short lived and that all the sacrifices made from Scarif to Endor were in vain. A tall order to say the least.

Maybe for 9, but all #8 needs is some rocking space battles.

Epic space battles have taken a haitus since 1983 and only now have made a huge comeback in RO. A space opera needs space battles.

Maybe a massive space battle AND a raucous lightsaber duel... IN SPACE!

Interesting, the space battles never did much for me. It was the lightsaber and ground "battles" that were the most entertaining to watch for me. Also, the Vader scenes where he kills his own guys. :lol

Indeed, most of the gushing reaction to RO is in the context of its connection and resemblance to ANH. How have non-SW fans reacted?

(I put it below TFA, BTW, on a similar level to ROTS).

Ep IX has been described as the most un-SW instalment yet, so expect it to be as divisive as the PT.

My only wish from Ep XIII-IX is that Snoke is revealed to be Plagueis.

You know with LFL giving RO the big space battle and not TFA now I wonder if it would be wise to have two big battles in back to back movies that are only a year apart. With the OT we had to wait *six years* to see another space battle after ANH with ESB doing something awesome and different in between. So hopefully Episode 8 (they really need to announce the name because I'm getting sick of typing that out, lol) give us some cool new landscape with vehicles as different from what we've seen before as AT-AT's were to TIE Fighters.

And obviously there's a massive demographic (maybe even an entire generation?) that doesn't give a rip about whether the victories of ROTJ are honored or not and just enjoy watching watching cool looking aliens and spaceships for two hours each year. To them SW is just another MCU, DCEU, James Bond, or whatever other ongoing series with no final resolution. I just think that LFL could have catered to both sides by simply having the threat of the sequel trilogy NOT come "from the ashes of the Empire." Then the OT could have had it's satisfying victory over the Empire while new movies dealt with new threats that didn't undermine the previous conflicts.

And let's just fast forward to Episode 9, even from a narrative standpoint whatever victory they have will have to ring hollow from Princess Leia's standpoint at the very minimum. Because either she dies and becomes yet another tragic character or she lives to the end of the new trilogy as a digital character. There's literally no other option, it has to be one of those two scenarios. And I don't care how high a note Episode 9 ends on, smiling computer-generated Carrie isn't gonna cut it. I'll take the real thing at the end of ROTJ in a heartbeat.
