What you watched was the funimation dub, or you haven't seen it. It's that simple. Funimation outsourced the dub to the ocean group studio (canadian) for DBZ, but eventually decided to setup an in house dub studio. It's funny cause in the original funimation dub start (which was the ep ginyu assault) they still mimic the voices of the ocean dub. Sabat mimics Brian for example.

It's specifically the episode Ginyu Assault, which is where burter and jeice attack goku. So technically it's a little after the ginyu's arrive. Between that ep and what the ocean group notes is the 108's ep 'goku's special technique', there is no ocean dub. So there is no ocean dub of goku going ssj for the first time for example (released anyway).

I have NO idea why the ocean dub didn't go back and start from where they left off, other than that they started at where the series was in terms of airing at that time. But they never went back apparently.

If I did it was only that part. The vids i posted prove ocean continued it afterwards and i specifically remember the weird voice for fat buu and the deeper voice for Trunks.

Uhu yeah that is correct, in fact Big D, initially, we switched back to ocean here too. Then we switched AGAIN to funimation, and the end of the buu saga I never saw as a kid.

Wait, what dub is this intro from? That could explain it since i remember seeing it as a kid during the Garlic saga, but it then went back to the ocean intro after:

Thanks man! That clears it up. I also just read up on the blue water dub and had horrific flashbacks to uk GT [emoji38]

Thats probably why I have such an immense hatred for GT, because the dub I got was horrible haha!

Yeah that actually corroborates my statements, as stated, ep 53 'Goku... Super saiyan?' is the last , because as I said 'Ginyu Assault' which is indeed ep 54, is where the funi dub starts. (Although, when funimation released their remastered version, they rerecorded that, but sadly could not use the faulconer score for any rerecordings, so I prefer the OG Funi version of that episode. The one episode where the funi voice actors mimic the ocean group.)

"Dubbing of this version commenced in 2000, starting at episode 108 (equivalent to the uncut 123), and ended in 2002, finishing at episode 276 (equivalent to 291 uncut); thus, completing the second half of the series. Episodes 108-276 "

also exactly like I said. The gap in between has no Ocean dub. Which, if anything, that alone makes funimation more legit purely on a technical level: it's complete. The Ocean dub severely is not. Also I think the Funimation dub did a better job going back to the early sagas, than the Ocean dub did recording the later sagas.

That said the ocean group is a great studio of actors, they did x-men evolution too, whcih is funny, cause you have cyclops = goku and wolverine = piccolo haha.

Just glad it helped out! I know that I read up on that a while back and had to search to find the pages again.

@ Big D "When the Ocean Group returned to dub the series, they began at episode 108 and not where they initially left off, at episode 53. This was for purposes of staying in step with FUNimation's dub which was also at episode 108 at the time. As a result, no Ocean dub exists for the Captain Ginyu, Frieza, or Garlic Jr. sagas, as well as the majority of the Trunks saga. A fan petition, created in 2003, was made in an effort to get the Ocean cast to dub episodes #54-107."

This deserves to be reposted.

So there is a gap with the Ocean dub.... Wonder what is on the DVDs for those episodes? The Funi Dub?

Also, that pic deserves to be my wallpaper, only I don't think I'd get away with it at work... heh heh

Nope never seen that before man! I dunno, its definitely good, but to me both dubs did their own music really well.

some thoughts on DBS

Has anyone else besides me noticed that the general "otherworldliness" of Earth has been toned down quite a bit? In early DBZ we had anthropomorphic animals running around with humans. I think there was even a cat-human hybrid as mayor of some city & it was completely normal. Flying cars. Dinosaurs coexisted with humans. Lots of other fantastical stuff.

But now, recently, haven't really been seeing any of that. Watch episode 1 of DBS (even both BoG & RoF), nothing but humans everywhere with no sign of these other intelligent creatures. What happened? Is it because Toriyama wants to keep everything more "grounded" & normal everyday life like our own? Looks like he wants to remove those specific fantasy elements from society & just keep the "weirdness" with the Z Warriors. Which is why people were in utter shock when they saw Goten & Trunks flying.

Cool t-shirt Shonen :)

Anime-Island are really drawing out these preorders, they keep just adding 1 or 2 things that I want to their listings. I've already got $83 in my cart just on stands and effect pieces. Today is gonna be an expensive one!

Also I know this has been asked before but does anyone have a link to Revival of F online in decent quality? Tried Google but no luck.
