I like it as a mindless monster movie, I just don't consider it a Godzilla movie. Once you look past the "what it's supposed to be and isn't" aspects, it's not bad as another summer film of mindless fun, throwaway characters and cheesy humor.

I still love the shot panning of from the hole to reveal Godzilla's footprint, there were some cool things in that movie wasted on it.

Personally I don't agree. I find Godzilla 98 is just a bad movie all around. But I don't like films like by Ronald Emmerich (sp?) He is a garbage director who makes garbage films IMO. Godzilla 98 goes beyond mindless and fun and becomes just an awful film that is a poor rip off of far superior films. It's cool that some people enjoy these types of films but the films just take the dumb just too far IMO.

That absolute best thing to come out of the movie was the Taco Bell ads, shame they were wasted on that movie.

The marketing for this movie was truly something. I remember sitting in a theatre seeing the trailer with the two guys fishing, and the crowd erupted in cheers at the end. Their whole tagline "Size Does Matter" was awesome and they really showed how big Godzilla was. Heck, even the poster showed the massiveness of Godzilla.

Their whole tagline "Size Does Matter" was awesome and they really showed how big Godzilla was. Heck, even the poster showed the massiveness of Godzilla.

And then the movie came out...

The teaser trailer was awesome, with his foot coming down through the roof stomping the T-Rex. Ironically, I'm pretty sure that was a direct shot at Jurassic Park, but the film would prove to be nowhere near the success and longevity of the the JP franchise.

Yeah, Emmerich pretty much just makes "X movie but dumber." Stargate was Raiders of the Lost Ark but dumber. Independence Day was a dumber Return of the Jedi. For White House Down I think he literally said what if we took every movie that ever ripped off Die Hard and made them ALL dumber? Godzilla was a dumber Gojira/Jurassic Park with cringeworthy references to Jaws and Siskel & Ebert (wtf?).
