Should the actor portraying Captain America be an American?

Darthneil, If it makes feel any better I would not have any problems with Gosling playing Captain America. But he doesn't strike me as the type of actor who would deign to play a "cartoon comic book character."

As for Ryan Reynolds he carries too much baggage in my opinion.

Well if we protest than we can stand in-line to get in without looking like those geeks who camp out for Star Wars movies...

Darthneil,

In what way was my previous post condescending or dimissive? I only pointed out claims in my argument that you failed to consider or remember.

I think my only failing in my post in your view was that I actually regard fiction with some credence. Captain America has never existed as Wallace or Rob Roy did. But that doesn't diminish what the character stands for. But if that is the case for you then you might as well dimiss Hamlet, Odyessus or Huckleberry Finn for that matter.

There's an Honours degree in English Literature hanging on my wall (well actually in storage) so I'd never dismiss Hamlet, Odyessus or Huckleberry Finn... And yet William Wallace was actually Hamlet as well in one adaptation :D...

But then to push the Oedipal Complex the actress cast to play his mother was only about eight or nine years older--- Oh Mel...

Agreed. If I had to choose one over the other I'd say Gosling would do a better job (especially after seeing him go mano a mano with Sir Anthony Hopkins in Fracture). In fact, if they filmed the early scrawny Steve Rogers stuff first Gosling could make himself look extremely frail and then given 5-6 months off he could buff himself up with a weight trainer (they could also use that time for fight choreography and for filming all non- Cap scenes)... He's the right age and we know he can act.

Thoughts?

How about Adam Beach
He is Native American and you can't get more American than that

You're right... Adam's a Canadian member of the First Nation originally from the Ottawa region.:D

It always comes back to those Canucks.:banana

Why do we care about this?As long as the finished product is an awesome comic book adaptation, what does it matter what the nationality of the actor is? I mean, casting a non American as Captain America isn't like a national disgrace...is it???

There should be no doubt that the actor playing Captain America SHOULD be an American, but it is possible that we might have to settle for a foreign actor.

Well, the question is whether the actor SHOULD be an American. The answer to that is obviously yes. Now, does the actor absolutely NEED to be an American? That is a whole other question. I would say, no, the actor does not absolutely NEED to be an American, but certainly, he SHOULD be.

Why? I know this borders on blasphemy but it's a comic book character. I just want to see a kicka** movie.

It would be nice if the actor had some sort of military experience, like how Owen Wilson was in the ROTC.

:horror You're not for one second suggesting... OWEN WILSON for Captain America are you???

Ben Stiller could be Thor... Jack Black could be Giant Man... Will Ferrell would positively nail Namor.

:D

Clever, Darthneil very clever you are. I have never seen that version of Hamlet. I know of it but little else. You've piqued my interest.

And yes Gosling would be driven enough to go through the rigors of gaining and losing the weight to play both Steve Rogers and Captain America. My only concern is would he be conflicted about playing a character with such a loaded identity. Last I heard, a while ago mind you, was that Gosling doesn't want to be consumed by the capitalist machine of the States. But who knows? If cast such sentiment might give Gosling's performance that much more nuance.

That old dude Rudy from the first Survivor. He would totally nail Captain America.

He's got the jawline.

And they've even already got a 1/6 toy out of him so HT could just use that head sculpt.
