While Maul has his snarl moments, the majority of time his expression is quite neutral as far as his facial features, the contacts in his eyes and the style of his face paint were instrumental in selling his intensity, something I loved about the character.

The original Maul was a shocking figure! I have seen more detail in a Hasbro toy!
I was new to 1/6 at that time though so didn't realise how bad it was until now lol.

The new one is just simply stunning. Not as much skin texturing as what the prototype had and not quite as much as what a Hot Toys would have, but the detailing around the eyes is superb!

My birthday is coming up soon and my mom gave me money to buy something for myself. Originally I was going to buy the Hot Toys Doctor Strange figure, but now I'm tempted to buy either the Sideshow Darth Maul or QMX Captain Picard. I'm torn between these three figures. I'm a big fan of all three characters and all three figures look pretty good. Such tough choices.

The biggest offender on the original Maul sculpt was the eyes... they are just too relaxed. Even with a repaint (placing the eyes higher, to emote anger) isn't enough. I ended up doing a small resculpt before repainting... I can't remember who first did the resculpt, but it made a big difference. Still not as nice as this new one, but better.

Oh, and just for fun... I was commissioned to repaint the original Maul to match a Zabrak from the Old Replublic... still quite neutral; but I think this one is a Jedi so it works a bit better.

I've got a dilemma similar to yours dude. Maul looks brilliant but I'm not sure he's worth the price right now. Would've been an absolute instabuy if they included his cloak but the accessories are a bit too light for me, I'll probably come back for him next year.

I also cut off parts of the eyelids to give him a bit more of that menacing stare:

I really like that Zabrak repaint! The expression definitely matches him much better.

Sideshow nailed this look with the new figure and I love it.

Agreed. As much as I like my custom version, this sculpt is on another level. Here some of my favorite shots that I think nicely show off the sculpt (and the different colour tones galactiboy mentioned).
(disclaimer: I'm using a custom body, not the SS one)

What body did you use to replace the SS one?

Just got this guy. Absolutely loving him, though there are warts (body, Sideshow, BODY). Tried a few shots as some kind of 'character study.' I plan on doing some work to him, though it's definitely a solid figure.

This is the only figure that I have strayed into PT territory for and I'm pleased I did. It really is a superb figure. However as Rubio says the sideshow body isn't up to scratch. Mine has pretty loose joints and doesn't hold dynamic poses very well.

I do love this figure despite the floppy body (really not sure why SS has issues with this). I found a decent deal on the old SS version mainly for the cloak but some of the other accessories and even the gloves - modified to fit this version - are decent.

Here's a shot I did recently with the "Sith droids"

That's a cool photo Comatoast! I do like how this figure looks. I wish I could budget for it.

Hi everybody.
Newbie here.
I have boght this Maul, and would like to fix flas.
I just can't go the 200+ thread pages, so can any good guy around make a small summary of flaws?
As of now, I have gathere:

1) Crappy still-in-2017-business-as-usual Sideshow body.

2) Solid boots.

3) No cloak, no binos, no nothing-----> FIXED. Got Medicom. Cloak is amazing. Better than Sideshow. Binos too.

Anything else?
Particularly, has anybody tried to fix the boots to make them more flexible?

Thanks,
m.

There you are... that was a hell of an innovation on the original sculpt... but yeah; the new one is just in another league.

And thanks, the Zabrak was a fun challenge.
