As far as I know Spielberg actually directed the sequence

Sent from the Bat Computer

He worked on the animatics at ILM, mainly the Yoda versus Sidious sequence on the senate pods. A couple of bits on Mustafar.
From what I've seen of the animatics especially the senate section it made it pretty intact to the final movie, although truncated.
The full elongated Spielberg versions were released at some point, can't remember exactly where, but I did see them. Maybe it was the Sith dvd. Wasn't particularly impressed there was a lot more flinging of senate pods! :lol

And never mind that Lucas himself directed "Star Wars" (the first movie some people call ANH) which most certainly doesn't suck.

It most likely would have sucked if not for Marcia Lucas (among others). The PT is Lucas in complete control with no one helping or challenging him. It seems that's where the difference is.

If you haven't already, you should read The Making of Books. Really really interesting stuff. Lucas was pretty much always in control, he used the other directors to "supply him" with footage to edit with. The only one that had any real standing with him was Kersh, and it shows in the final product. But Lucas was VERY unhappy with the whole process on EMPIRE. As a result Marquand had a horrible experience on Jedi. He was hired as a director but basically acted/was treated like a 1st AD/Camera man. He wasn't bitter about it publicly, but watch some of the behind the scenes footage on the iPad versions of the book and you can see him basically being ignored by Lucas and the 1st AD while shooting scenes. Lucas did allow him to edit the movie, then trashed it completely and started from scratch himself.

Lucas didn't really have anyone to challenge him on Jedi, which is where things started to go down hill for Star Wars. By many accounts, the original Star Wars was shaping up to be a disaster and Marcia's editing did a lot to salvage it. Another editor too, but I've forgotten his name.

I haven't read those Making Of books yet, who wrote them? Did Lucas have any influence on the book? He tends to "revise" history a bit.

I know this is the SSC ROTJ Vader thread. But in Ep. III when Windu deflected Palpy's force lightening back to his face; why wasn't Palpy in extreme agony?? So his face is deformed but geesh that would have hurt.

Sorry to get off topic folks. :monkey3

The best answer for prequel things not making sense is "just because". Lucas did all kinds of things that had little, or no though behind them at all. It's a "just because". Palpatine was also very sickly and old looking in Ep2, then he's a perfectly healthy middle aged dude again in Ep3. Lucas had no idea why the Emperor looked the way he did in ROTJ, he just made **** up as he went along. I'm positive they were leaning toward Palpatine getting sickly and gross looking in Ep2 dude to his evil power growing bla bla, but then abandoned that idea by Ep3. Why it would do that to his face, and not to anyone else in the films, is beyond me.

Someone will post a pic soon, and get us back on topic, I'm sure. lol

Always thought that was the most bizarre explanation of Palpatine's ROTJ face.

Or maybe it was his real face all along.

Personally I like the idea of the dark side taking its toll on his appearance and with the damage from his Force Lightning being reflected from Windu's Saber causing the scarring to his face. As to why he wasn't screaming in agony well he wasn't going to let that turn him into a screaming ***** was he? Come on he is the greatest SITH that ever lived and it was what made him into the man he became.

Well he was the only Sith that was on screen besides Vader from the OT.

Greatest SITH in everything that SW has ever done, bar none my friend.

lol nah, he won't scream in pain, but he'll sure cower and beg for his life.

It was all part of the master plan. In fact had Mace been smarter then he would have realised just like Admiral Ackbar that it was a trap. :lecture :lol

Palps was legitimately defeated before Anakin arrived in the room. He wasn't acting when he was talking lightening bolts through the head. He played to Anakin's sympathy once he was there, but that's no some master plan. Just fortunate timing. Mace would have ended it all if Anakin was stuck in traffic.

Sure he played it up to turn Anakin and him playing a coward is a classic villain trait but if Anakin was running late that night I'm sure Palpatine had something up his sleeve for Master Windu, believe me Windu was dust either way.

Sidious was clearly bested. He survived by sheer luck and the fact Anakin is a moron.

In the Saber duel no doubt but he would have had his Force Lightning still to fire at Mace giving him time to jump to his feet and them execute a Kung-Fu kick, Steven Seagal style and boot Mace out of the window.
