Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

Shouldn’t a movie be allowed to be highly praised for its own set of qualities though?

TDK is highly praised for how it uniquely handled Batman in a realistic criminal setting in a world without superheroes.

If Thor 3 set out to make a unique superhero comedy take on tragedy and it impressed the critics then why can’t it share the same RT score as TDK?

Thor 3 having the same high % as TDK doesn’t all of a sudden tarnish TDK.

Both movies just so happened to deliver a quality product on their respective take on a superhero character.

That sounds similar to what I often say about comparing Aliens and The Godfather. Aliens is a terrible Mafia movie while Godfather is a useless sci-fi action/horror. But they're 10/10s in their respective genres. So saying one is better than the other is essentially saying that one genre is better than the other.

Absolutely! I've said it before too. A similar score has nothing to do with whether it's content is similar. You could have a perfect comedy and a perfect crime drama, and they could never be comparable. I always look at whether it entertained me and delivered on what it was trying to achieve. Young Frankenstein and Goodfellas might be equally successful at delivering the goods, so to speak, but they are apples and oranges in story and tone.

Because Nolan is a true auteur and not part of the Feige-driven mass marketing tool known as Marvel Studios. :lecture

Kidding aside, those are a lot of great points and I agree with all of them. Unfortunately, if we praised every movie for its own set of qualities, there would be no sense in critiquing a movie - because the whole point of critiquing a movie is to criticize its own set of qualities (or at least that seems to be the general consensus here). :lol

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

It would be fine if there was a subset with in this movie group but they are all roped in together all fall under comic book movies so if RT is ranking similar types of movies i naturally compare the movies against one another and that's what these so called critics do they compare them to pass judgement on them regardless of what the filmmaker was going for. Unfortunately it's all chicken in there eyes there is no dark meat or white meat sub section

Well, they are critics, so thats their job. That's like complaining about the Judge passing sentence on you.

But both of these are comic book movies the critics don't care if one is set in a darker tone and the other is more serious they compare to one another. The critics say that superman man of steel own to dark it's should have more jokes and be light hearted They are not interested in it being s different take they expect a certain style if they do not see it it's a knock a giant the movie.

Nothing safe and stupid should ever reach the 90s on RT. The high 80s and 90s should be reserved for bold art, not popcorn garbage for the moronic masses.

Ragnarok deserves at best an 80%.

This is a Star Wars thread right?

Leaves the DC crying to every other thread on this forum.

Thing is, is most will disagree with someone else's opinion as to what art is.

You think BVS and 21 Jump Street are art, I disagree.

"I make art until someone dies."

"Nothing like Ragnarok should ever get an 80 or 90. Ragnarok deserves an 80."

Good old SNIKT, lol.

Lol I said high 80s. And it barely deserves an 80%.

If RT made sense, this is how the MCU would look:

Iron Man (2008) 89%
The Incredible Hulk (2008) 84%
Iron Man 2 (2010) 69%
Thor (2011) 73%
Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) 70%
The Avengers (2012) 90%
Iron Man 3 (2013) 66%
Thor: The Dark World (2013) 50%
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) 91%
Guardians of The Galaxy (2014) 89%
Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) 74%
Ant-Man (2015) 68%
Captain America: Civil War (2016) 75%
Doctor Strange (2016) 69%
Guardians of The Galaxy: Vol. 2 (2017) 86%
Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) 67%
Thor: Ragnarok (2017) 80%

My 3 favorite MCU movies. But high art? Bold? These three are definitely popcorn movies.
