Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - May 24, 2019

Abrams will have directed the second highest number of SW films - half as many as Lucas!

Pretty sure that's why he's doing it.

Plus, he's got absolutely nothing better to do clearly -- he never seems to have any "dream project" or creative original ideas to do any more. It's always taking up the helm of a well-established franchise.

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - May 24, 2019

Even with Abrams' shortcomings he did still direct my fourth favorite SW film. So if he can at *least* turn in another film that is superior to Jedi then we should have a pretty kickass trilogy. Worst case scenario Kennedy can always bring in Gilroy to tighten up the finale, lol.

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - May 24, 2019

Hey, I like JJ... I loved Alias and Lost in their time, I raced to see MI3... and Cloverfield... I really hoped he'd be Spielberg-lite. But he turned out to be really, really, lite.... too lite for me. And many others apparently.

I also love Spielberg, but he did give us things like Batteries Not Included and Crystal Skull too...

I also love Lucas for what he did... a long time ago...

so.... you know....

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - May 24, 2019

Yeah Abrams is another fanboy director like Cameron was with ALIENS, Jackson with Kong, and Edwards with RO but Abrams seems a little too content basking in the shadow of his idols as opposed to actively trying to match or exceed their work (assuming he even could if he tried of course.)

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - May 24, 2019

Sure Lucas/Spielberg have given us crap but at least they also gave us masterpieces.

JJ has no masterpieces in his library of meh.

But for all the talk of JJ copying ANH wasn't ANH/Raiders copies of other movies just obviously copied to perfection.

I don't even know if Spielberg can be Spielbergesque anymore after the Crystal Skull. I am slightly excited for Ready Player One though. Maybe if its good I can have a little faith he can deliver us a good final Indy film, and maybe eventually give me my dream come true of a Spielberg directed SW movie.

Yeah he did follow 1941 with Raiders and Hook with JP so maybe he does have one last comeback in him. Doubtful though as it's been a loooong drought....

Yeah, even Hitchcock couldn't muster it after a certain point.

People were saying Spielberg was done way before Hook -- it started after Indy 2, and with Color Purple and Empire of the Sun, so he did Last Crusade but that didn't really feel like a comeback. Then he followed that up with that Dreyfuss firefighting movie so it did seem like Spielberg lost his way. No monster hit that changed moviemaking from 1985-1993...

He made up for it with a monster movie AND a holocaust film. Talk about a comeback.

No kidding. Plus Saving Private Ryan which continues to influence war movies even today. And then the not great but still respectable A.I., Minority Report and War of the Worlds. Then he went off a cliff with KOTCS and still has yet to recover. I guess if you take the 1985-1993 drought that's 8 years and now it's been 9 years since KOTCS. It's now or never, lol.

As much as I rag on TFA it really is much easier to enjoy than those horrid PT.

Those actually make me feel like a loser while watching them lol

Holy crap I'm laughing so hard right now. :lol

But yeah they're pretty much the cinematic equivalent of standing at the kitchen sink crying alone with a drink in your hand. Definitely the part of your night that you leave out when someone asks what you did that evening, lol.

Yup...I just reposted it....dammit!!!

PT is nearly unwatchable.....ROTS is the exception....

TFA is very re watchable to me.

Not sure how anyone can compare TPM and AOTC to TFA in script , acting , or effects....design I will concede ......but the rest of PT is horrid...

It's one thing to copy general "feels" and tropes, but when you copy an individual movie it's a bit more obvious.

Also, the PT took the B-movie homages to the next level, which is probably why fans of a certain age hated it. But if you view Jar Jar as a Buster Keaton homage, the Geonosian Arena as a Flash Gordon homage, jumping on the back of the Reek and kissing Anakin's cheek as a western homage, they look better...

No seriously.....nothing makes some of the crap in those films better ....

Maybe cut out of TPM almost all of Jake's acting, cut out Jar Jar and all the gungans for that matter , Jabba, the trade federation puppets, the midichlorian stuff, most of the Jedi meeting with yoda, and you might a film worth watching..

There are not any good scenes in AOTC .....period.
