Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

I agree. It'll make $900 to 1 billion worldwide, and most of that will be the first weekend. It won't have any legs.

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

The way TLJ ended, It didn't leave you with that "Oh Man I gotta see what happens next" kind of moment like they had in Empire Strikes Back... I think a lot of people will be fine waiting for it to come out on Blu-Ray or Netfilx or something...

This will be the first SW film I won't go see at the cinema. I don't think TLJ is horrific, but because of the way it left things I just don't care about what happens next. Now if Kylo and Rey would have both switched sides then that would have made me want to see where things were going.

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

Can't say that I really buy the "oh I'm definitely skipping the next one" prior to any trailers, reviews, etc. We'll see how many people stick to their guns when the hype train is in full effect and Episode IX is the talk of the town.

That darn friend that always drags people kicking and screaming to opening night...

exactly....

Holiday SW film? 1.5-2 billion.

Not everyone who goes to see blockbuster SW films cares as much as the boycotters apparently do....

I would say the are by far, the vocal minority.

It won't be imperative for me. But if someone invites me along of course I will go.

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

Thank you to those who have posted a prediction. It'll be fun to come back and revisit these in about a year and a half. Here's a quick glimpse of predicted worldwide numbers so far:

me: $2.0 billion
xipotec: $1.5 - $2.0 billion
Khev: $1.0 - $1.3 billion
Otomofan: $0.9 - $1.0 billion
dan350zr: $900 million

I'm a bit stunned at just how low some of you guys think Ep9 will perform. If it comes in at $1.0 billion worldwide (or lower), I will absolutely concede that TLJ ruined the franchise. There's no other way the final chapter of the Skywalker saga would ever underperform the previous entry. And I just can't believe that this'll be the case.

But, since I hate being wrong - and if the lower estimates are on the right track - then it looks like I'm gonna have to go see Episode IX about, oh . . . (let me do the quick math here) . . . a hundred million times. Well, ****.

Okay, then . . .

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

I think a billion worldwide is still respectable especially when taking over-saturation into account. Sure Episode IX will be the "end" of the trilogy but it's still technically the *5th* new SW film in that same amount of years. Even Civil War made less than AoU for that reason despite being the far better film.

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

I agree that $1 billion would be respectable for most other sequels. But, for the final episode to take in half of TFA? And come in lower than TLJ and perhaps even Rogue One!? I would consider that a disaster. I know it seems crazy to call a $1 billion box office haul a disaster, but I just don't think capping off the saga with that result could be considered anything but.

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

TLJ was beyond tragic, but it's silly to give up on a franchise due to one bad apple. You should take the movies individually as they come. I have zero doubt that TLJ has seriously harmed this franchise. But at the same time, I suspect they will be going all out on this one and will likely pander to the fans. We all know if the trailers drop and impress, TLJ will be a distant bad memory and Star Wars fever will reach a decent height again. I suspect Kennedy will be gone soon enough also and the man or woman that replaces her will be sold as a fresh start for the franchise. I also wouldn't be completely surprised if episode 9 is split into two parts. This trilogy is missing the middle part that it badly needs to make the finale attractive.

It's amazing...this time last year everyone was so hyped for that thing...this time next year I will be too. Years ago, new footage for a SW film was like finding lost pages of the Bible...now it's another film. The ST really made that magic feeling disappear.

Great post.

Especially this.. I was that SW fan.

Well JJ Abrams joined Instagram today. He said before he was too secretive with TFA, hopefully he'll have more and more news from the set.

Have 3 Irish members ever posted in the same thread at the same time?
Some kind of parallel universe wormhole is opening up as I type.
