I see it much the same way. Everyone seems to want to toss around the phrase "ruined Star Wars" for movies they don't like, but ANH and ESB are what really ruined Star Wars. There will never be another SW movie as good as those two. And that's fine! For me, every entry in the franchise that is a well-made film is something I'm grateful for. When they don't measure up to that standard (the PT, imo), then I trash them. But when they do, I don't sweat that they're not as good as the first two. ROTJ suffers from the impossible standard set by ANH and ESB. Some people like to treat ROTJ as if it was an embarrassing film. It wasn't. Not even close. It just wasn't ANH/ESB. But look at all of the iconic moments that ROTJ contributed to the saga:
- Defrosting Han (Boushh reveal)
- Luke versus the Rancor
- The skiff battle
- Leia killing Jabba like a boss
- Yoda's last words
- The throne room LS battle
- Palps' lightning
- Lando's DS run
- Vader being unmasked
- Luke getting the 3-ghost nod of approval
Yeah, the Ewoks were a deeply regrettable choice. And yes, there were some other wtf cringey moments. But if it wasn't for the flawlessness of the two movies that came before it, ROTJ would be looked at much differently.
Regrettable instances (or characters) are gonna be a part of SW movies, and that's just something I expect going in. But as long as there are some truly iconic/great moments, and a generally well-made film (acting, directing, effects, dialogue, etc,), then I can consider it a great SW movie. To me, ROTJ is a great SW movie; it's just not in the same league as ANH and ESB. For the same reasons, I also consider TLJ a great SW movie (even though far from perfect). TLJ gave me the following iconic scenes in a generally well-made film:
- Holdo's hyperspace manuever
- Luke and R2-D2 on the Falcon
- Luke and Yoda on Ahch-To
- Luke's projection on Crait
- Kylo's killing of Snoke
- Rey and Kylo teaming up
- Rey suspending all those rocks
- Luke dying while gazing at twin suns
Just like I can forgive Ewoks and some other silliness in ROTJ, I can forgive Canto Bight and some epic silliness in TLJ. Both films delivered great/iconic Star Wars moments that I won't forget. As good as Rogue One was, there were only 3 or 4 iconic moments in it for me. And as much as I enjoyed TFA, the high points weren't as plentiful as ROTJ and TLJ (even though I admit that the low points in TFA weren't as low as in the other two).
I don't expect perfection from SW films. ANH and ESB are never going to be equaled, and that's fine. But I think great SW movies are getting crapped on for their low points while ignoring how much iconic and great content they provided. These movies don't need to be Citizen Kane; I think they just need to be worthy additions to the saga by being generally well made, and providing new cool moments to remember.
Like the 91% of professional film critics? Y'know, the people who watch more movies than virtually anyone else, and who make a living scrutinizing them? Oh wait, I forgot . . . they're just Disney shills (even though they didn't shill for Solo with nearly as much praise).
Maybe like the people who take film seriously enough to hold highly-regarded award votes and presentations? Like the Empire awards (Best Film and Best Director), or the Saturn Awards (Best Writing). Oh wait, I forgot . . . those are all just political.
Okay fine, those of us who like TLJ just have no clue. Please try to have mercy on us, our bad taste, and our puny little brains that can't even recognize it.
Maybe he's like me. I'm a geek during the week and a stud on the weekends.
Like George said, he made it for kids. Ironically TPM was "too Disney" at the time.
Which was a huge departure from SW and ESB. Look at the tagline from this unused teaser poster circa 1976/77. The original films were made for the kid in everyone, young and old.

I wonder if they will do a 3 1/2 hour film as a way to address the wheel spinning from TLJ.
Hope theare true.de-aged Luke rumors
That really was an abominable line. My head disappeared into my shoulders when I first heard it. And I hadn't even gotten over how they managed to survive that high speed collision that she deliberately instigated. Stupidity like that should not have been rewarded with survival.
So lotsa flash back to sooth all the fans who couldn’t accept the leap forward without exposition?
Its not going to help. They believe their hero became a bum. Explaining why he sit it out and becomes depressed is just going to make things worse.
