Dark Phoenix proved that it is possible for a franchise to bomb out despite pitching a "it all ends here" final chapter. I do have a feeling that TROS will still manage to do $750 million to $1 billion globally but...what if it doesn't? What if modern audiences just see it as another Solo and stay home?

Galaxy's Edge was assumed to be the #1 park attraction ever and yet not only did it not bring in huge new crowds Disney wasn't even able to keep the *same* crowds as they were before it opened. Overall park attendance has actually gone down since GE opened and all of the attractions in that park supposedly cater *only* to the ST crowd, the same crowd that TROS is banking on...

Their mind tricks aren't working. And I hate that word 'content'.

Lol really? No wonder no one is talking about it then. Who the hell wants to see ST attractions when people want what made Star Wars Star Wars .

Yeah, and now that Disney thinks the MCU is invincible they're loading up Phase 4 with characters and storylines birthed since they purchased Marvel Comics (Jane Foster Thor, Falcon Cap, Kate Bishop Hawkeye) while, just like with Star Wars, turning their backs on the decades of lore that led up to their acquisition.

Yep you get to visit a planet not in any of the films, fly the ST Falcon and mingle with Rey, Kylo Ren and other member of the FO and Resistance. The OT and PT are nowhere to be found.

I think Solo largely did poorly because many people don't know it existed, due to a number of reasons. TRoS won't have that issue, but I think even for people that like the series it's not necessarily as exciting as before so we'll see how it does.

Amen. I like Sci Fi movies.....Star Wars are fun Sci Fi movies.

If people try to make them more than that, disappointment is assured.

Honestly I think SW is just aging out.
Its sorta like people are hanging onto Howdy Doody or Flash Gordon to make a big return.

Its just had its time....and is becoming less and less special to people.

I think there is a big distinction to be made here. People aren't excited about TROS or more broadly the sequel trilogy in general. That doesn't mean they still don't love Star Wars. People still go crazy over Star Wars. But only the parts of it they love. Frankly its ridiculous to say its aging out.

My young nephews still are obsessed with the series. But when given the chance of playing with a Darth Vader/Luke or Rey/Kylo toys, they are going to pick the first every time. Unfortunately since Disney is insisting on only letting the sequel trilogy be prominently visible right now, overall interest isn't going to be too visible either.

Its kind of like only offering New Coke in stores, and when no one wants to drink it trying to make the argument that the whole Coca Cola brand is outdated.

That's not quite accurate. The OT can the PT can be found, and strangely those are the only parts of the park doing well.
The merchandise and experiences that aren't any trilogy specific or is more closely tied to the earlier movies is flying off the shelves faster than they can stock it. Disney is actually raising prices of merch within the park next month.
Tickets to the Cantina or "build your own lightsaber" experiences still sell out within 5 minutes of tickets being offered.

Unfortunately, this is the truth -- but I feel this is mostly true for the seemingly endless "Skywalker" storyline.

RO showed new life was possible in this familiar galaxy... and because of that we're getting the only SW story people seem generally excited about: The Mandalorian.

A new direction could save the galaxy far, far away.

If there's to be new Star Wars product, they really need to go in two directions - do stuff like Mandalorian that is basically set within the OT (like RO) and if there are to be "new storylines" stuff, reboot it the way Planet of the Apes was rebooted, so it has currency in today's zeitgeist. The Burton POTA felt stale - a pale copy of the old movies - but the newer trilogy was rebooted in a way that made it relevant to today.

What they've done with teh ST just feels like a retread, like the Burton POTA - its echoing what was the old cultural relevancy of the 1970s and 1980s but it just doesn't resonate because times have changed. Simply adding the SJW aspect doesn't help because it's a shallow social movement that isn't widely accepted as positive (like the social movement aspect of the OT was)- its divisive at best.

The Galaxy's Edge thing was SUCH a strange choice. I mean I understand that ST takes precedence, but wouldn't you do roughly one third on each?:dunno

Not true for me. I waited outside my local mom and pop theater (still to this day no online seat picking like most chains) for 16 hours to be first in line for TFA, RO and TLJ. In the winter. I was VERY excited! Did the same for the prequels back in the day (summer time though so not a problem). After I saw TLJ, I was confused. Saw it a second time the next day. Totally turned me off from Disney Wars. Never saw Solo in theaters. Still haven’t watched it digitally or bought the Bluray. Won’t be seeing TROS either. They can get ****ed with their new movies. I just don’t care anymore.

No interest in going to their new crappy land at Disney. If it was OT or even PT lands, I would consider. As of now, not worth my time or money. To those who look forward to going, enjoy! Glad you like the new crap. Not for me anymore.

George The Maker once said every sequel would make less than the last. Several mega franchises since then have proved him wrong (Avengers obviously the most recent case in point). Maybe it's just a Star Wars thing.

I don't think there was any less awareness than for RO, which I thought received hardly any marketing. The TLJ backlash and Solo's release so soon afterwards wouldn't have helped.

(Plus it was a movie with no good reason to exist...)

Well documented that ESB was mostly not of his doing.

"Mostly" is pushing it, but it was certainly the most collaborative.

Let's face it people. The real reason Star Wars still lives on is that the diehards cannot look away. Just don't look people, you know what garbage they will be putting out.

Solo really had a lot of marketing problems, it's a big issue if you're trying to market your movie 3 months before it's out, I've talked to a bunch of people who didn't know it existed. Part of that was the short marketing campaign, but it was also hurt by how it broke the pattern by coming out in May vs. December, people weren't expecting it.
Rogue One probably did better than it should have, mostly because there was still a lot of Star Wars hype after TFA and people were excited to see anything new. I think at the least, Rogue One has value as one of the best looking Star Wars films, to me Solo is the bottom in a number of areas including visuals and music.

Basically all the stuff we've heard or said ourselves over and over again at this point but I love the humorous way this guy delivers it.

Smugglers run was alright, being in the falcon was nice, seeing my kids having fun was priceless [emoji85]
