Oh man you guys are going to get this thread closed too :slap

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

I copied and pasted that huge www.thedigitalbits.com breakdown of what to get with a new 4K TV but hell if I remember what thread it was posted in, lol. So that's better, OLED or QLED?

For me there's no comparison. OLED all day long.

LG & Samsung have been the standout 2 companies for quite sometime, especially since Sony nearly exited the CE market, Pioneer (was the king) & Panasonic gave up on Plasma & never seemed to succeed with LCD, & Sharp died out long ago.. But QLED (formerly quantum dot) is just Samsung putting off the inevitable since they did not invest the money into OLED like LG did. Which is ironic since Samsung supplies everyone, including Apple, with their OLED displays for cell phones. They just never invested in large displays. LG is now selling panels to Sony and Panasonic. No manufacturer seems to care nor want Samsung to offer their QLED panels (OEM) for production of their own models.

Here's a good comparison article.

https://www.digitaltrends.com/home-theater/qled-vs-oled-tv/

By the way I worked in the consumer electronics industry for 20 years if that makes my opinion any more valid. And I have some friends that still do so I get the scoop on lots of new tech.

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

Just becareful with UHD purchases because not all studios allow 4K redemption of the digital copy only HD.

My head hurts just trying to keep up with it lol

Ah yes keeping it as confusing as always lol.. it’s what studios do.

My favourite part are the forced advertisements even though you bought the dang bluray lol

Or the FBI warning that the pirates would never see anyway and only legal owners do, every time :lol

But thanks for the warning, I’ll keep that in mind!

I haven't fully investigated myself, and I should add that iTunes doesn't currently allow you to download 4k, only stream (I think that was on the studios' insistence). You'll need a third-party app to download the file and remove the DRM.

I did assume there’d be a program one would have to use to strip the DRM but that’s interesting that it downloads the stream as well. Thanks, good to know. I’ll look into the quality difference then.

If you’re viewing in a darker environment, then nothing beats oled. It’s amazing. It looks better than a projector too, outside of the size comparison of course. I have a theatre room with a really good projector but in terms of image quality the oled is worlds beyond.

LG really beat everyone to the punch with oled and that’s why they’re so recommended. You can’t really go wrong with any of the oled TVs on the market though.

I just saw they’re introducing MicroLED which’ll rock the socks off of oled at ces 2018 yesterday though... the latest and greatest. It never ends :lol

I'm currently waiting on Ondesoft's solution to have that functionality. Not sure if any others offer it yet.

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

Correct me if I am wrong, but is it even possible to stream 4K ? I mean with a gigabit connection maybe, but typical internet connections around the country is less to 50mbps.....most less than 20...

I barley can get that level of streaming and I get 150-200 MBps.

To my knowledge true 4K is only really achievable from disc through cable or local streaming....

Thats incorrect all you need is 15mbps to stream 4k HDR and regular 4k content like for direct tv for example, even then the only drawback of digital is the audio, the bluray is raw uncompressed while the streaming gets the hit. Movies in regular HD get a small hit but on 4k HDR the pictures look crisp on stream.

If you stream through your actual tv, note that the internal modems are not that great, also note that you must ensure your hdmi cable is on the first port, read the manual of your tv it will tell you, but my sony had two hdmi ports capable of handling the hdmi through audio and video while my new 70” vizio only has one hdmi port that supports the 4k and up streaming

Do you have a favorite brand? A lot of folks over at www.hometheaterforum.com seem to lean toward LG (though I've heard they're not very reliable from a QC standpoint.)

I’m happy he posted that link because it goes to the same place I was going.

From the article:

“BRIGHTNESS

When it comes to capable brightness, QLED TVs have a considerable advantage. LED TVs were already good at getting extremely bright, but the addition of quantum dots allows them to get even brighter. Because of this, QLED TVs claim superior “color volume,” meaning they are able to make all colors in the available spectrum brighter without losing saturation. QLED TV makers also claim they are better for HDR content because spectral highlights in images – the glint of light reflecting off a lake or a shiny car, for instance – are more powerful and more easily visible.”

This is the way I see it Khev.

While my brain is telling me that OLED is king especially with real location movies like “When Harry Met Sally” my heart rate increases when I see a modern visual effects extravaganza blazing on a QLED!

Something about the increased brightness on an LED TRICKS me into preferring it over my grandfathers beautifully safe LG OLED.

Well that’s great info....still new to the 4K as I Just got my Samsung about 3 months ago...

I have had zero luck with 4K content streaming......it all looks like crap. I will check the port.

My real concerns are living free of physical media. Streaming just hasn’t worked out for me yet.....

Khev if you really want an unbiased review of items from the home theater community, I mean these are folks who buy their own tv's to rate them in all possible ways www.rtings.com will you give the latest and greatest in EVERYTHING. those guys wear them out and compare other brands if need be.

I used to buy movies every tuesday at best buy just because, even movies I never watched, then I got broken into, all 600 dvd's gone. I made a vow never to amass that much media, ever since I started going digital. I only buy physical movies I love and want the most out of the audio. Is there a difference in streaming, a bit, but it's barely noticeable. Like I mentioned it's only audio on demanding films.

I can honestly tell you that between 4k and a good movie that's been polished in 1080p HD you can barely tell the difference at all. Unless is in HDR10 and if you have an OLED screen, the top three 4k dedicated makers are LG, Sony and Samsung, all other brands get their screens from LG mostly, but LG hits the nail in the head with good quality, but I am moving away from Sony since their DRM lockouts are too restrictive.

But yes pay attention to your resolution while watching or streaming 4k content because you won't ever know and will probably watch it in 1080 since a lot of people have a 4k capable tv but not setup in the right settings. Look for the ARC HDMI port that supports high bandwidth audio/video along with a 2.4hdmi cable that supports chroma 4:4:4 for hdr10 and trust me the quality will jump at you, if you bought your tv within the last three years you should have hdr capabilities, since it's mostly implemented to the masses in the last 3 years.

I stick with itunes since their movie catalogue is bigger than everyone else, and since I started buying digital movies I was content because Apple decided to upgrade all movies with 4k hdr, some of them are straight up 4k but it's still good, the only ones who have not jumped to 4k so far is the entire MCU except for Spiderman Homecoming and the Star Wars Franchise. I work in the home theater department so I know the minimum speed at all is from 12-15mpbs for streaming and just remember, if you want to stream it's 100% better to stick with an ethernet cord straight to streaming device, if you can't get one wired to your tv location use plug link adapters that send internet through power.

Man that really, really sucks about that break in and theft. Sorry to hear that. I'm down to buying only the movies I love too just because I've upgraded my collection so many times at this point. Of course the "movies I love" is probably 100-200 films, lol.

You didn't quote the rest of the brightness dabate listed in the article..

"When it comes to that HDR argument, though, much can be said for the total contrast afforded by an OLED TV’s perfect black levels. When you start from perfect black, perceived contrast requires less intense brightness in those highlighted areas for HDR programming, and the end result for the viewer is similar to that of a much brighter QLED TV – at least in a dark room, anyway. In rooms with a lot of ambient light, a QLED’s brightness advantage can be very helpful at delivering that big visual punch HDR content should deliver."

It's similiar to the old LCD vs Plasma debate. Plasma was the superior in every way, except brightness. The Pioneer Elite & last Panasonic Plasma's were still considered the best TV's for color reproduction, contrast, black level, and motion. Finally to only be dethroned recently by OLED. This is from professionals/videophiles who spend their life examining this stuff either through their careers or just out of passion. LCD won over the populace due to it's secondary characteristics such as price, and again perceived brightness as being better picture quality. Way too many other things to list in contrast.

So it's simple. Do you watch TV during the day in a room with a lot of ambient light & a brightly lit room at night? Or can you control the amount of light in the room and do you prefer to watch movies in a darker environment like a movie theater. The QLED will lose it's contrast and black level in dim light, as to where in a bright environment it would look to be more on par with the OLED.

It's your decision... Both are good, but one is older technology trying to be made better, the other is new & state of the art and will continue to improve exponentially.

Remember, lots of people thought HDDVD was the future and BluRay was gonna lose that format war too.

Edit: And here's an article from only a few months ago (11/17) to back up my Plasma statements.

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

Jeez just checked out the stores ..for all the 4K doubters I can tell you those versions of TLJ are flying out of the stores. The blu rays are. Definitely selling quick despite the hate of the film . I mean let’s face it it’s still SW

One thing that bothers me on the packaging is the red dust crate theme. ugh, it was only in the final act. Wish they used the beauty of Ach To instead :slap

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

this is why i am sticking to VHS tapes for older movies and dvd for newer movies. theres no way im doing to change formats until everything is fully digital and fully streamable. when netflix gets more competition

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

Mark Hamill, when asked if he regrets Luke's reaction to Han's death being cut from the final movie:

"Yes, of course because it shows Luke was putting on a facade in front of Rey and even Chewie, that he was embittered and sort of a broken man," Hamill said. "And I think the fact that he could let his emotions out when he was by himself would have made an impact on the audience because it allowed them to grieve the loss of Han Solo just the way Luke felt it.

"But that always happens in films. You say, 'Oh, what about this scene where this happens or that happens?" because you want to give the fullest experience that you can. And like you say, it was brief enough that I was -- [chuckles] They had time for me to milk that big alien but to show any human emotion? Nah, we don't have time for that. But again it's not my call."

:lol :lol :lol :lol :lol

To be fair, I think given the context of the interview and the tone he's just being snarky here, but it's still funny to see the titty milk debacle be acknowledged in such a fashion. (And he had fun with the pics he shared on twitter in the past as well :lol)

Not sure how many more years dvd will be available though..I think it’s lasted this long because people still don’t get blu Ray :lecture.

Personally I hope everything becomes streaming..so much easier
