Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

Not sure how many more years dvd will be available though..I think it’s lasted this long because people still don’t get blu Ray :lecture.

Personally I hope everything becomes streaming..so much easier

thats ok. i find dvds at walmart for 2-3 bucks. i dont need the high def for older horror movies or comedies. i just want a service that lets me buy movies online and lets me keep the file.
i hate itunes and hate amazon prime where they keep the file on their system. i want to be able to watch the movies offline

Mark Hamill, when asked if he regrets Luke's reaction to Han's death being cut from the final movie:

:lol :lol :lol :lol :lol

To be fair, I think given the context of the interview and the tone he's just being snarky here, but it's still funny to see the titty milk debacle be acknowledged in such a fashion. (And he had fun with the pics he shared on twitter in the past as well :lol)

:lol :lol

I think Mark is having a blast giving Rian a hard time about this movie.

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

Listening to Rian’s commentary during the film kind of puts the film in a different prospective. I see the film differently now

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

how ???????????

Why he chose some scenes . What his intentions were with what he came up with..remember he wrote this as well. Like the first lesson with Luke and Rey was actually filmed on a real cliff and Rian couldn’t get close enough to film what they were doing so he had to communicate through a microphone. he wasn’t sure how the Luke and Ben Solo flashback was going to pan out. Rian didn’t know if he should’ve started with Luke training Ben for example

You didn't quote the rest of the brightness dabate listed in the article..

"When it comes to that HDR argument, though, much can be said for the total contrast afforded by an OLED TV’s perfect black levels. When you start from perfect black, perceived contrast requires less intense brightness in those highlighted areas for HDR programming, and the end result for the viewer is similar to that of a much brighter QLED TV – at least in a dark room, anyway. In rooms with a lot of ambient light, a QLED’s brightness advantage can be very helpful at delivering that big visual punch HDR content should deliver."

It's similiar to the old LCD vs Plasma debate. Plasma was the superior in every way, except brightness. The Pioneer Elite & last Panasonic Plasma's were still considered the best TV's for color reproduction, contrast, black level, and motion. Finally to only be dethroned recently by OLED. This is from professionals/videophiles who spend their life examining this stuff either through their careers or just out of passion. LCD won over the populace due to it's secondary characteristics such as price, and again perceived brightness as being better picture quality. Way too many other things to list in contrast.

So it's simple. Do you watch TV during the day in a room with a lot of ambient light & a brightly lit room at night? Or can you control the amount of light in the room and do you prefer to watch movies in a darker environment like a movie theater. The QLED will lose it's contrast and black level in dim light, as to where in a bright environment it would look to be more on par with the OLED.

It's your decision... Both are good, but one is older technology trying to be made better, the other is new & state of the art and will continue to improve exponentially.

Remember, lots of people thought HDDVD was the future and BluRay was gonna lose that format war too.

Edit: And here's an article from only a few months ago (11/17) to back up my Plasma statements.

I’m happy the article went there.

“In rooms with a lot of ambient light QLED brightness advantage can be very helpful at delivering that big visual punch HDR content should deliver.”

Don’t get me wrong i’m in awe of the foundation OLED starts from BUT something about the increased brightness power from the QLED makes certain movies have more punch on them over the beautifully subdued OLED.

That's what most people see 1st, the overall brightness level, and then get fooled into believing Brightness makes a better picture. Again why the vast majority of people believed LCD to be better than PLASMA. If you ever shopped a flat panel, like most people, the stores you go to have the TV's in a brightly lit area as do all big box retail stores. They are incapable of displaying a TV in their proper environment. The only proper big box store would be a Best Buy that has a separate Magnolia section. Ever notice how dim the lighting is in the Magnolia section compared to the floor where all the other TV's are hung and displayed? There's a reason. That's where you can tell the strengths and weaknesses of the display. The serious buyer ventures into the Magnolia section to see all the more expensive high end TV's. If you ever venture into a small A/V store, again you'll notice a different environment where lighting is controlled.

Also why the bigger achievement in the new TV's isn't the higher 4K resolution, but the HDR+ & Dolby Vision expanded contrast & color palette. Everyone can see that. Not everyone picks up on fine detail, especially since it varies with screen size and viewing distance.

Lastly, there's a reason TV's are set by default in their Dynamic picture mode from the factory where the back lighting level is cranked to it's highest setting. Because they are opened and set on a shelf and need to contend with all the bright lighting in the store's environment. By contrast, a TV should not remain in that mode once purchased and brought home. That's why there is also a standard mode, movie mode, pro mode, etc... all which would look too dark in the store. These companies try to make it easy for people to set up the TV properly rather than them trying to fine tune the TV by eye or with a test pattern disc. Non of the factory modes are ever accurate.

I cringe when I go to family/friends homes and they have their TV's in Dynamic mode with the back lighting cranked so high. It washes out the picture big time and the colors are over saturated. I love seeing grass looking like it's neon green. It's very distracting to me. But, some people like that as opposed to a realistic looking image. Do you want to be wowed, or look at your TV then out the window and not be able to tell the difference? It's very hard to convince certain people what they are seeing is wrong, unless you can do a proper demo. But those days are gone as there are no more trained sales people on the sales floor anymore, rather just clerks.

It's just like trying to explain to certain people why TLJ is such a bad movie, not just a bad SW movie, but a BAD movie. :wink1:
