All of the tv spots are continuing to confirm the plot leaks more and more. It all seems inevitable now. And I guess I'm the only one who came out of TLJ thinking this trilogy was set up for a better finish than it would've been otherwise.
After TFA, everything was looking like a complete rehash of the OT as the only way that the "plucky Rebellion/Resistance" would defeat the "oppressive Empire/FO" . . . by having the "new hope" (Rey) redeem the new Vader (Kylo) to take out the new Emperor (Snoke) and his FO.
That prospect was so lazy that it was depressing. Then TLJ cleared the way for a different outcome. When he killed his master, Kylo did more than show that he could defeat Snoke; he showed that he could defeat Rey. How? Because Rey was thoroughly embarrassed by Snoke, and it was obvious that she had no chance of surviving a confrontation with him. Kylo outsmarted Snoke, used the Force more masterfully, and *killed* him. Rey clearly couldn't have.
Snoke made Rey look amateurish and unready; tossing her around the room, easily reading her mind, and even knocking her in the head with a lightsaber hilt after taking it over from her in mid-flight. She was outmatched by Snoke in every way. Rey defeating Kylo in TFA could then suddenly be explained by Kylo foreseeing that he might be able to use her at some point (as he ultimately did).
When Rey refused to join Kylo at the end, he wouldn't need to lose to her a second time in Ep9 like he had in TFA. He even told Luke that he'd kill Rey and end every last shred of the Resistance. Episode IX had that as a starting point: Supreme Leader Kylo, no New Republic leadership, a diminished Resistance, and a Rey that wouldn't be able to benefit from a Kylo merely seeking to defend himself without killing her. In other words, a chance to capitalize on a credible threat and stakes in the first act.
But TROS will be nothing more than Kylo going back to being neutered by Rey. Palpatine will be used to replace the threat that Kylo could've/should've become. And Rey will ultimately prove to be able to do what Luke and Anakin couldn't do: truly defeat the greatest Sith of all. And Kylo (having become the best character in the ST), will be tossed aside with a token redemption for the sake of a more feel-good happy ending.

It's funny, I didn't share your enthusiasm for TLJ, but I do share your depression going into TROS...
Damm. Even apj is losing hope. You know this movie will suck when even TLJ people lose hope

The Mandolorian also relies on nostalgia
What earthly nationality that is inexplicably obsessed with horseys will show up next.
All I know is that once this hits theaters... it will be over! The ST will be gone forever. No more worrying about what they'll ruin next. How they'll defile the past. What earthly nationality will show up next.
Hopefully JJ will never come near another Star Wars movie again. And may 2020 be the year that KK is no longer Keeper of the Force.
And we can settle back with Mando... and relax.
Nik Cage will save the ST one day. It shall be resurrected.

Sure the execution is different but Lucas winged it just the same as Disney.
